I feel my heart thumping in panic when I see the wolves headed toward me. ‘This is it,’ I think. ‘I’m finished.’

I drop the Breeder with a light thump and look around, trying to assess my best route of escape. The wolves are headed toward me in a close group, so it’s possible I can sneak off to the side and make a run for it into the forest.

Looking back at the wolves, none of them seem especially fast, and they’re clearly not tough Alphas or Betas, so it’s possible I can take them. Of course, I’ve spent a lot of time in that dungeon with barely any food and no physical exercise, so I may not be in top shape right now.

I’m just about to make my final fight-or-flight decision when a voice comes into my head.

‘My crew is approaching you,’ says Kane in the mind-link. ‘They’re telling me you’re in sight.’

‘Well, you could have fucking told me that earlier before I had a heart attack!’ I say. At least I hadn’t run away like an idiot. It takes a minute before I calm to the point where I can breathe again.

‘I’m a bit busy here,’ he says. ‘A thank you would be nice.’

I roll my eyes. ‘Thank you,’ I say dryly. I knew that his people couldn’t communicate directly with me, since they were not in my pack and they weren’t Alphas, but still, he could have told me earlier.

I don’t even know or care about what Kane said next because his wolves had arrived. A couple of them shift to human form to carry the Breeder for me, thankfully. They were big guys, and normally I would check them out a bit once they’d shifted into their birthday suits, just to see if they were someone that I’d want to have a little fun with on the side. But right now, I don’t even care about naked men, even if they are potentially hot.

“We need to move fast,” I say in almost a whisper. The guy closest to me, who’s currently holding the Breeder’s feet, nods, and they direct me off to the left while the bulk of Kane’s wolves stay back. Once we’ve rounded the corner and are making a break for the forest, I hear a lot of commotion back there that sounds like several of them are getting their heads torn off by the castle guards.

As long as it’s not me getting killed, who the fuck cares?

I hear a series of desperate yelps from behind while I shift and break into a full run through the forest. The two guys carrying the Breeder won’t be able to keep up with me, but that’s their problem. I’m not sticking around to get recaptured and get hauled back into that dungeon.

There’s nothing but freedom ahead of me once I get over the castle wall, and nothing will stop me from heading toward it at full speed.

Reece and I are searching the area near the shed, and we’re at a loss as to where they—whoever ‘they’ are—may have taken Eli. He’s still not answering in the mind-link, and I’m struggling to hold out hope that he’s just knocked out somewhere. It’s quite possible that the kidnappers have drugged him and are keeping him that way so that we can’t communicate with him.

I really, really hope that’s the case. I can’t even form the words for the alternative.

Cora is just sitting in a chair that we’ve dragged out of what’s left of the shed. She can’t help us find anything, and I want to keep her in our line of sight so we can prevent her from warning whomever she worked with to kidnap Eli about our location.

I still don’t trust her. Something about her story just isn’t adding up. Or maybe it’s the way she tells it; she’s not the greatest liar.

Although, up until now, she has gotten away with a lot. I can’t believe that she told Eli that she was from my pack. I can’t blame him for believing her, but he really should have checked with me first. I wonder how long she’s been in Eli’s pack plotting all this. It’s possible that she’s been there since before I ever met him, which would make sense. He didn’t think to ask because she had blended in by the time we met at the castle.

Reece looks up at me and shakes his head. ‘The only thing I’m seeing is the mess they made dragging him here,’ he says in the mind-link. ‘Nothing seems to lead away.’

‘Same over here,’ I answer him. ‘I’m thinking that whoever took him away is smarter than whoever brought him here.’

‘I’m afraid of that too,’ he says. ‘Logically, they should go north, since south just leads back in the direction of the castle.’

I look to the north and see nothing but a forest. I’m not as familiar with this area as I am with the rest of Gene’s pack lands, so I’m not sure how deep this forest could be.

‘Let’s try that way for a bit,’ I say. ‘Do you know much about this forest?’

I can see him shaking his head. ‘I know the way I came from my pack lands, and I know where we’re fighting Kane, but I’ve never been in this direction.’

‘Me neither,’ I say. ‘But we’ll check it out.’

He nods and I walk closer to Cora, saying “Let’s go,” and she immediately gets up. Clearly, our Alpha influence is still pretty strong.

The forest isn’t far, so we stay in human form for the time being. I’m not in a hurry to go running into a strange forest without knowing who is in there, so we’re cautious. As we approach, I can see that there’s actually a dirt road that wasn’t visible from afar due to its angle, and it’s clear by some recent tracks that someone has traveled here not long ago.

‘And this must be our kidnappers,’ I say to Reece in the mind-link. We’re keeping our conversation to ourselves so we can speak freely without worrying about Cora.

‘Tracks look fresh,’ he says, agreeing with my assessment. ‘Let’s follow for a bit and see where we end up.’

The road is a bit rough, and we spend about an hour following it, keeping our senses alert in case someone comes at us from the forest that surrounds us. Nothing seems out of the ordinary, so we keep going until we hit a clearing.

At that point, there are multiple tracks.

‘They changed vehicles,’ Reece says.

‘I think so,’ I say, squatting down to examine the tread. ‘It’s definitely a larger vehicle, maybe even a military one.’

‘And it goes that way,’ he says, pointing toward a second road that leads back into the deep forest.

Without another word, Reece, Cora, and I head in that direction. But when we reach the road and start to head into the forest, the scent in the air changes.

‘Someone’s here,’ Reece says right as I come to the same conclusion.

Whoever it is, they seem to have come from nowhere, and now I’m fairly certain that we’re already surrounded. Reece and I both shift and take a solid stance to show that we’re both Alphas, and if these wolves are anything less than that, they’d better back off.

It doesn’t seem to help, because just then a scrawny black wolf comes charging out from the left, and shortly after about a dozen of them follow him, all coming from different directions.

It’s an ambush.

I don’t see what Cora is doing, but I assume she shifts as well; she’d get ripped to shreds by a dozen wolves when she’s in human form.

The black wolf, who seems to be in charge although he doesn’t smell or move like an Alpha, circles around in front of me, his eyes wild with hate.

I give him one fair warning growl, which he ignores, then I charge at him, knocking him all the way back into the forest. I’m not ready to kill yet as I’m not sure who these wolves are or what they’re doing here.

As he growls and regains his footing, a gray female wolf charges me from the side, and I easily dodge her attack.

`We don’t want to hurt anyone,’ I say, engaging the mind-link as Alpha to speak to all the wolves.

But it has no effect, and by now the black wolf is back up and charging at me. He takes one final leap toward me with his teeth bared, and I have no choice but to sink my own canines deep into the flesh of his neck.

I can tell now that the rest of the wolves are scared, but two of them who look like twins with black fur come charging at me together. Reece knocks one aside and the other veers off before he hits me. But while I was bracing for that hit, a third wolf was coming at me from behind and smashed its entire weight into my hip.

I yelp in pain and spin around, finishing him off with a bite to his carotid artery. Reece moves in to take a stance next to me, and the rest of the wolves back off, turning when they’re at a distance and running back into the forest.

The pain in my hip is radiating down my leg, and I sit down gently on the other side. ‘That one got a good hit in,’ I say.

‘Where’s Cora?’ Reece asks.

I look around and see nothing. She’d gotten away, but I needed time to heal my hip before going after her.

‘You think that was a distraction on purpose?’ he asks.

‘If it was, two deaths are a high price to pay for one escape,’ I say.

‘You gonna be good to travel?’ he asks.

‘Give me a few moments, and I’ll be fine,’ I say. ‘It’s already healing a bit.’

He nods, but then we both hear another voice echoing in our minds.

‘Alpha Tristan, Alpha Reece, are you there?’ comes the voice of Beta Adam. He’s far away so his voice is faint, but we can hear him.

‘Come back quick!’ he says. ‘They’ve taken Rose!’
