My heart aches so bad I can barely concentrate on the road ahead of me, but I know it’s the only way I’m getting to Rose. It feels like I should just jump out and shift, and it’ll go faster, but I know that’s not possible right now with my hand injury.

In fact, it’s hard to even steer the van with the way my hand is wrapped up right now. I just have to hope this piece of shit gets me there. If it does, I’m going to have every mechanic in my pack work on this thing to restore it to completely brand-new condition, then I’m going to keep it forever. I’ll pay Pete, or whoever owns it in his group of rogues, good money.

It’ll be my lucky van.

“How are you holding up?” Kelly’s voice invades my thoughts and almost makes me turn the wheel in surprise. We’re going fairly fast, so I’m glad I don’t.

“I don’t know,” I say. “I just need to get there.”

She nods. “We all do,” she says. “And we will.”

“I know, but that doesn’t make the ‘getting there’ any easier,” I say.

“I’ve never been on this road,” she says, looking ahead, maybe trying to change the subject.

We’ve hit the highway now so it’s faster going, thank the Goddess, and that means we’re getting closer to a place where I can reach everyone in the mind-link. Not knowing has been a nightmare that’s almost worse than having Rose kidnapped in the first place. Well, not really of course, but this whole idea of not knowing where she’s at gives me an unbearable level of anxiety that feels like rocks in my stomach.

I just need to know she’s okay. She has to be okay.

“She’s going to be okay,” says Kelly as though she’s reading my mind.

“I keep telling myself that,” I say. “But the worrying is unbearable. I mean, it’s hard enough on a woman, isn’t it, to have one baby? She’s having four. And on top of that, she’s kidnapped, right when she’s practically ready to have the babies, all alone without us in some strange castle with some maniac Alpha who’s using her for… who knows what! That’s stress on top of stress on top of stress. Is she really going to be okay?”

I take my eyes off the road for a second to look at Kelly, and the look on her face is unreadable. She’s trying to be strong for me. Sisters can be annoying, but boy do I need her right now.

“Watch the road,” she says.

Annoying again. It almost makes me laugh.

“Rose is a very strong woman,” she says. “Look at all she’s been through in her life. Her parents treated her like garbage and made her work her ass off for them. She had to do some of the worst jobs possible back in her home pack… and look at her. She’s strong, resilient. She was supposed to come be a breeder. Do you know how terrifying that is to a young woman? But she got on that train and did everything she was supposed to do to make that happen. Now, I’m sure the Moon Goddess played a huge role in that. But still, it was Rose’s strength that got her to that point. I have a lot of faith that she will be alright, and so will the pups.”

I nod, tears beginning to stream down my eyes.

“Now, don’t start that,” she says, reaching into her pocket to pull out a tissue. I can’t believe she has a tissue in the middle of nowhere. “You won’t be able to see the road.” She giggled and I tried to smile. “There we go. It’s really going to be okay. Do you think the Moon Goddess would go through all the trouble to make Rose be such a strong woman, then have her come to you as your mate, and probably the mate of the others too, and get pregnant with your pup and the others, only to have something happen to her?”

She has a point.

“Of course not,” she says, answering her own question. “This,” she says as she gestures around the van and at the road in front of us, “was all meant to be.”

There’s a strength in her voice, a determination that everything is going to be okay, and it sparks something inside me. She’s right. The Moon Goddess brought the most perfect woman in the world to me for a reason. She’s going to be okay. We’re going to be okay.

“Now, I’m going to go talk to my new friend, Heather,” she says, patting me on the shoulder. “There’s no crying and driving, so focus.”

“I’m not crying,” I say, as tears are still streaming down my cheeks.

“Mmhmm,” she says and walks back to sit by Heather.

I focus back on the road and the long drive ahead. I have hope in my heart even through all the pain. I’m going to get to her. I push on the gas a little and speed up, knowing I’m getting closer.

‘Does anyone there have a watch?’ asks Shelby in the mind-link while flipping through pages.

The Alphas have brought us all into a single mind-link so we can consult all Rose’s childbirth books while they rush her to Alpha Mark’s pack hospital, which is the closest one to Alpha Kane’s castle. Well, I guess it’s not his castle anymore since he’s dead. Thank the Goddess.

‘Why do we need that?’ asks Alpha Tristan.

Shelby looks up at me, exasperated, as if I’m the one who just asked the question. Even I know that a woman has to time contractions, but I really don’t blame the Alphas for being in panic mode right now, because Rose is already in labor.

Instead of yelling at him and calling him an idiot, which she would probably do to me, she calmly says, ‘We need to time her contractions. Now, are you sure her water didn’t break?’

‘No,’ answers Alpha Reece, who somehow seems to be the calmest of all of them and probably still remembers about timing contractions. ‘But I do have a watch. I’m supposed to time the minutes between them, right?’

‘Yes,’ Shelby answers with composure. When did my wife become able to be so relaxed in a crisis? I’m pretty impressed with her right now, and it’s frankly turning me on. ‘The next time she has one, time the distance between them. And if her water does break, let me know.’

Dr. Penderghan came into the room we’re in, which is right across from where Barbara is currently arguing with Gene, since I need to keep an eye on her. “What’s the news?” the doctor asks. The Alphas had wanted her to meet them at Alpha Mark’s castle, but Dr. Penderghan has a very seriously ill patient here and wasn’t willing to leave when she knows Alpha Mark’s healers can handle this.

‘Alphas, I have Dr. Penderghan with us. Add her in,’ Shelby says.

They continue to have a conversation about minutes and timing and water or no water, and the doctor talks directly with Rose for a bit, which is frankly a relief instead of having the Alphas try to interpret for her. I don’t know why they didn’t do that in the first place.

They’re not too far away from Alpha Mark’s place, so hopefully Rose will be in a hospital bed with the healer there very soon.

In the meantime, Barbara’s argument with Gene is getting louder. I swear, all that woman does is argue.

“What the fuck do you mean?” yells Gene. He’s pretty good at arguing himself. I think the two of them actually enjoy it and would be bored if there wasn’t any arguing. “I’ve spent a fortune on your fucking clothes and you’re still not happy?”

“The future Luna of this pack cannot go about in rags!” Barbara says. “Never mind. I’ll deal with this myself!” She walks off in a huff, and Gene comes out of the room and stares at me through the open door, then he barges into this room.

“What’s going on in here?” he asks. “Doctor? Is someone sick?”

We hadn’t told him what was going on at all. He doesn’t know that Alpha Kane is dead, or that Rose has been rescued, or that the pups are about to be born. The less he knows about all this, the better. The Alphas wanted it that way.

“Oh, yes,” says Shelby, and she coughs and pounds on her chest.

The doctor, being wonderful, picks up on it instantly and pretends to be examining her. “I definitely think you need bed rest,” she says.

Gene walks over and looks at her. “What’s wrong with her?” he asks.

“She has… she has a tussis russis virus,” the doctor says. It sounds like something made up, but I nod anyway. “And I’m trying to examine this patient, Your Majesty, if I may?” she added.

Gene looks at her. “Oh, yes. Carry on,” he says. “But get this sick woman out of my wing. We can’t have sick women in my wing!”

“Right away, Your Majesty,” I say, and thankfully Gene walks off, muttering to himself about women and sickness and clothes.

The doctor and Shelby go back to their discussion with the Alphas, and now I have to go catch up to find Barbara and find out where the hell she went. Once again, I have one job, and I’d better get it right.

I’ll leave the childbirth thing to the experts.
