We are nearly to the castle grounds, and I am ready to taste blood. I want to find Alpha Kane and rip his throat out, but then, I hear a voice I don’t know in my head that makes me slow down a bit. The other two Alphas that I’m running right alongside also slow down, and I’m wondering if perhaps they are getting the same message.

“Hey, Alphas? I know you don’t know me, but my name is Diana, and I’m with Rose.”

“Who are you?” I ask immediately.

“Diana!” she says again.

I shake my head. “Yes, I know that, but who are you? What do you want?”

“I want you to know that Rose can’t message you right now because Alpha Kane is using some sort of Alpha mind-trick power thing to mess with her, but he isn’t doing that to me.”

“Where is she?” Reece asks.

Mark chimes in, “Is she okay?”

“She’s fine. She’s here in the castle with me. But she wanted you to know that Alpha Kane has his sharpshooters ready for whenever you and your forces appear in front of the castle.”

“Sharpshooters?” I repeat. “What the actual fuck?”

I stop running, and so do the other two Alphas as we exchange looks of shock and surprise. I pause in my conversation with the mystery woman to tell all of the troops I currently have barreling toward the castle to stop and wait, and I’m also in contact with the men that I have already got fighting at the castle. Why haven’t they been affected by these sharpshooters? I don’t know the answer, but I’m thankful they haven’t been.

“It’s abysmal to think that Alpha Kane would actually be using guns!” Mark says.

“He’s such an asshole!” Reece agrees. We are all still in our wolf forms, so we are talking to one another using the mind-link, but we are not including our new friend Diana, yet.

But then I ask her, “You said Rose is okay? And she knows we are coming for her?”

“Yes, she knows. She just didn’t want you to die trying,” the woman tells us.

“Why are you helping her?” Mark asks, and he sounds so rude, I want to punch him, but I don’t currently have a hand. “Why would someone who works in Alpha Kane’s castle want to help Rose?”

I narrow my eyes at him and say only to him and Reece. “Be nice! She’s helping.”

He has that look on his face, though. Even as a wolf, I can see it. He’s thinking she might be lying to us or otherwise trying to trick us so that we fail.

I tend to see the good in people, though. I tend to assume the best from people. Until they prove me otherwise. Maybe that makes me wrong about people a lot of times, and I end up regretting it when they prove to me that they’re not the person I had hoped they were, but I think it’s better than always looking over my shoulder or assuming the worst.

“I don’t know if she’s helping or not! “ Mark points out, proving my point about him not trusting others.

“I’m helping her because I like her,” Diana says, her tone a little snarky, and I can’t blame her. She probably doesn’t appreciate her kindness being questioned. “Rose is a nice person, and I would like to see her and her pups get out of here safely. Also, I am hoping that she will agree to take me with her when she leaves, and since Alpha Kane is an awful bastard, I am looking forward to getting as far away from him as fucking possible.”

I can see her point, and I’m about to say so when Mr. Grumpy Pants, Mark, says, “Well, I don’t know about that. We can’t just have a spy running around in our midst, telling our enemies everything.”

“A spy?” she echoes, and I can hear that she’s offended by his remarks. “Listen, I’m just trying to help. She’s in a room on the third floor near the front of the castle. If you want anything else, you know where to find me.”

With that, she’s gone, and I am left glowering at Mark. “Way to go, you negative Nancy!” I tell him.

“Yeah!” Reece agrees. “Why can’t you ever just be nice?”

“Me?” Mark asks, looking all shocked. “You don’t think there’s a chance she was just telling us what Kane wants us to hear?”

“No! I don’t think so!” I tell him. “Why would Kane want her to tell us that he’s about to try to shoot us?”

“Because he’s not!” Mark replies. “Maybe he’s not going to shoot us, he’s just saying that so we’ll back off. It worked, didn’t it? We’re not running toward the castle anymore.”

I want to tell him where he can shove his theory, but we don’t have time for that. “Listen, we know that he has guns, and he’s willing to use them, so we need to do something he’s not expecting.”

“What do you think that would be?” Reece asks.

“I think… we can send in some of our troops from the front, as long as they know what they’re up against, and they spend more time zigging and zagging than actually attacking, drawing Kane’s own wolves out and using them as shields while we go around and join with our forces that are already fighting, blow through the defenses, and come up on the flanks of the sharpshooters. Maybe they won’t know we’re there until it’s too late.”

“That sounds like a solid plan to me,” Reece says. “It’s too bad we didn’t get to ask Diana how many sharpshooters there were or what’s going on with them before she left abruptly.” He is glaring at Mark, too.

“You guys are never suspicious of anyone, and it’s going to bite you in the ass,” he says, shaking his wolf head. “All right. Let’s do this,” he agrees. We send the information we need to our men, and we have several volunteers who are all about distracting the sharpshooters, which is remarkable because it is dangerous.

Then, Mark and Reece break to the north, and I head to the south so that we can go around from opposite sides and sneak up on Kane.

As I am running, I try to connect with Diana again. “Listen, I’m sorry about Alpha Mark,” I tell her. “He’s just a negative sort of person.”

“I don’t like him,” she says in an angry voice.

“Neither do I sometimes,” I admit. “But if you could do us all a favor and get Rose somewhere safe, like at the back side of the castle, near a door where we can get her out, and possibly even hide her from Alpha Kane in case he goes looking for her to use her to make us stop fighting, I would appreciate it, and I’ll make sure you are handsomely rewarded.”

Diana is quiet for a moment, and I think she might say no, but then she says, “I’ll do you one better. I’ll bring her right to you.”

“But… what about the fighting?” I ask.

She replies, “I can get around that.”
