Pregnant With Four Alphas' Babies: A Reverse Harem Romance Chapter 226: Stop That Train!
*Mark*
‘There’s a middle-aged couple on this train with a newborn,’ I hear a voice in my mind say. It’s the conductor on a train that left the station about twenty minutes before we got there. ‘Just doesn’t look right to me. They’re acting strange.’
‘I’ll be there in a few minutes!’ I answer back. ‘Just keep the train stopped, and tell them all it’s a mechanical issue, and you’ll be going on ahead shortly. Do you have guards on the train?’
‘Just a couple, Alpha,’ he replies, sounding a bit nervous. ‘They don’t look too threatening, but I’m not sure what might happen if they try to get off.’
‘Can’t you lock the doors?’ I ask him.
‘Well, it’s against railroad regulations to lock the doors on a train that’s fully stopped,’ he explains to me.
I grunt aloud, gaining the attention of the other men that are in the vehicle with me, a couple of guards I picked up at the train station. Tristan and Eli have gone in other directions to investigate other sightings of babies on trains.
‘Listen, Bobby,’ I say, getting personal, ‘I don’t give a shit what the regulations say. I’m the Alpha here. Lock the damn doors, and don’t let anyone off of that train until I get there.’
‘Y-yes, sir, Alpha Mark,’ he says, and I can tell by the way his voice is shaking even through the mind-link that I’ve scared him.
I’m not happy about that, but at the moment, I can’t let it concern me. I have to find out if this couple with the baby has one of our children with them.
After about five more minutes of driving at breakneck speed, we come across a railroad crossing, and the driver slows down. “Sir, I can’t drive down the tracks, and there’s no access road, but the train is about a mile down the road here, between two intersections. I’m afraid we’ll have to hoof it the rest of the way.”
“Hoof it?” I repeat, trying not to laugh. We are wolves. Why not “paw it”? He just grins at me, though, and I figure this was his attempt at trying to lighten the mood, even though it isn’t enough to humor me under the circumstances.
I get out of the car, but I don’t bother to shift. If I go to that train in my wolf form, I’m liable to eat someone alive.
I sprint down the side of the tracks, doing my best to watch for hazards, like old railroad ties, broken bottles, and sharp rocks. After a couple of minutes of running, I’m at the train. I pause outside of the door, looking inside.
Something is happening in there. I see the conductor and another man standing on either side of a couple who look old enough to be my parents’ age, and they are not happy. The woman is jabbing the conductor in the chest with her finger, and her husband seems to be making demands.
Judging by their clothing, I would say they are pretty well-off, but I don’t recognize the man. I wonder if they live in another pack. This train makes several stops in my pack lands and then heads straight into Tristan’s territory and beyond.
I bang on the door, and the conductor sees me, recognizes me, and heads over, leaving way for the woman to squeeze out from between the seats, which she does.
It’s then that I see she is holding something—someone–in her arms.
“Alpha Mark,” he says. “I’m Bobby. Please come in. This couple is getting rather agitated.”
“Let me off this train right now!” the woman shouts. “This is my son! Mine!”
I walk over to them, and give her a hard look that immediately makes her stop her demands. Behind me, out on the tracks, there are several guards, ready to shift and eat her face if she doesn’t calm the fuck down.
“That’s your son?” I ask her, and she blanches, her eyelashes flickering a mile a minute. “No offense, but that must be some kind of a miracle.”
Her mouth drops open. “I’m not that old!” she declares.
“Who do you think you are?” her husband barks at me.
“I’m Alpha Mark,” I tell him. “And this is my pack territory. Now, who the fuck are you?” I take a step closer to him, and he backs up, hitting the bottom of the seat and folding into it, still stammering.
“We’re not from here,” the woman says, her face braver than her husband’s. “Alpha Tristan is our Alpha and he–”
“Will kill you if you are lying to me,” I say, glaring at her. “I’m sure you both understand that Alpha Tristan and I have the same woman as the mother of our children, don’t you? And I’m pretty sure that baby you are holding is either my son or Alpha Eli’s son, though I can’t tell because you have his head covered with that bloody blue blanket.” Little flecks of red were visible around the top of the blanket, which made me want to rip him out of the woman’s arms to make sure he was okay.
“We… uh….” She looked at her husband who was still sitting there. “We didn’t know!” She thrust the baby into my arms, and I saw his face for the first time.
“Matthew!” I exclaimed, melting backward into the seat behind me. It was hard to keep my composure as a powerful Alpha when I’d just been reunited with my missing son. He had been sleeping, but when he heard my voice say his name, his eyes flickered open, and he began to coo.
Immediately, I said through the mind-link, ‘Rose, I have him! I have Matthew! And he’s okay!’
All I could hear in my head was the sound of her crying. Eventually, she said, ‘Thank the Moon Goddess, Mark! Thank you! Thank you!’
‘I love you so much, baby,’ I replied. ‘Now, I have to deal with the people who took him.’
‘Okay. Please get him back to me as soon as you can.’
‘I will,’ I promise her. Then, I turn to the guards outside. “Get these people back to the train station. They’ve got a lot of explaining to do.” Turning to the perps, I say, “As far as I know, it’s against the law to buy a baby in any pack lands in the kingdom. You’d better be able to tell me exactly where you bought my son because someone is going to pay for this—and if it’s not the guy who sold him to you, well, it’ll be you.”
