Pregnant With Four Alphas' Babies: A Reverse Harem Romance Chapter 49: Countering the King
*Shelby*
I don’t want to be angry at my husband. I know his duties as the king’s Beta, but I do wish he could be more assertive at times. Killing a defenseless woman would be a good place to draw the line of loyalty, right? I shake the thoughts out of my head. It does make sense that he would want to pretend to be doing the job so that no one else is assigned to do it.
I understand where he’s coming from, and I know how the king is. He is so manipulative, and I’m starting to think madness runs in their family line. Just look at his cousin, Emily.
“We need a plan–and fast,” I assert as I stand up. I can’t help but start pacing as I try to come up with ideas.
“I’ill keep the king thinking that I’m all for his plan. That’ll keep him calm since he thinks he has the whole Rose issue sorted,” Adam declares.
I turn to look at him. “The Rose issue? This is ridiculous. I wonder when Rose became such a big issue that it can only be resolved by killing her.”
Adam shrugs as he places his hands in his pockets. The move makes his pants tighten around his frame, drawing my attention to his muscular lower body. I can’t help but smile as I look at his toned thighs.
I walk a little until I’m behind him, taking a sneaky look at his beautiful ass. It’s been almost a week since we last made love, and I miss him.
I shake my head. This isn’t the right time. Focus! We need a plan. Murderous crazy king. I inhale and exhale.
“So the king’s worried about the Alphas falling for Rose instead of that wretched Emily, right?”
“Yes,” Adam answers me.
He’s wearing a confused look as if he’s wondering what I’m thinking. I smile. I’m thinking of a plan all right, and I’m also thinking about pushing him onto the bed and having my way with him.
Focus… yes. But sex is also therapeutic in stressful times, and this whole development has me frazzled.
“What if Emily was out of the picture?” I ask.
Adam frowns as he turns to face me, taking away the perfect view of his beautiful tushy. “What do you mean out of the picture?”
“I mean dead!” I exclaim, and Adam’s eyes widen.
“My love, you can’t be serious,” he says, and I shrug.
“Why not? The king wants to kill my sweet friend for Emily, so why can’t we return the favor?”
“No. There won’t be any killing of anyone.”
Well, I wasn’t really serious. I mean, if Emily dies it will put all this nonsense to rest, but I’m not a murderer. Maybe I could just take her out to a bullfighting festival and ‘accidentally’ push her into the ring with fighting bulls. She loves wearing red outfits, a perfect target for the bulls. Accidents happen, right?
“I’m just kidding, hun. Although Emily going away would solve a lot of our problems.”
“Killing Emily will just make us no different from the king,” Adam states firmly.
“Yeah! Yeah! What if she doesn’t die but just disappears?” I suggest.
A crease forms on Adam’s forehead. “Disappear to where?”
“I don’t know… Mars? She could wake up on a rocketship heading to space somehow.” I know none of these plans will work. If anything happens to Emily, the first suspect would be Rose or Adam. This would just worsen the whole situation… not that this present situation isn’t already up there with the worst possible scenarios.
Adam chuckles. “Do you know if there are plans to launch a rocket to space?”
I find myself chuckling at that too. An image of Emily stuck on a rocket plays in my head. She would be screaming for Tara and cursing all the stars as the rocket floated in space. What a beautiful occasion it would be on Earth if it was rid of that awful woman.
“Maybe we could ask the Alphas for help?” I suggest.
Adam shakes his head, “No! If the Alphas learn about the king's plan, they’ll confront him. The king will know I told them his plan. Remember, he’s only said this to me.”
“Oh, okay. But perhaps I could ask Kelly to help us come up with a plan then,” I suggest, and again Adam shakes his head. I must admire how the Goddess made necks strong enough to hold one’s head in place. At the rate Adam keeps shaking his head, it could have fallen off if wasn’t screwed on so well.
“Kelly will definitely tell her brother. If Alpha Eli finds out, it’d just be a matter of time before the other Alphas find out. So no Kelly.”
I sigh. So we have no one to help us come up with a plan. It appears Adam and I will have to deal with this on our own.
I can’t possibly tell Rose about this; it would make her panic. In her condition, stress and worry will do her and the baby more harm than good.
“Do you think we could find a way to sneak Rose out of the palace?” I ask.
Adam takes a hand out of his pocket and traces his jawline with his finger. “That could work, but with guards all around the palace, we probably won’t be able to get her through the doors without someone seeing us.”
I raise my hand to play with the braid in my hair that hangs loosely down the side of my head.
“There must be a way we can get her out of here without being noticed.”
“The palace guards will be hyper aware, more so now with her being pregnant. They’ll be sure to monitor her movements.”
I know he is right, but getting Rose out of this palace is the only solution to keeping her safe. If she stays here, she will be killed. Even if Adam doesn’t do it, the king will find someone else to do it.
“What if we sneak her out on the ‘Blood Moon Night?’ Everyone will be too busy having fun and getting drunk to see her leaving.”
Adam hesitates. I know he’ll just give me another reason why this plan won’t work. “The guards don’t stop keeping watch just because there’s a ball happening,” he states.
I fold my arms and take a few steps, growing a little irritated. “All right, well, if everything I have to say is wrong, do you have any better ideas?” I’m getting frustrated with the situation and with my husband. He doesn’t realize he isn’t helping. He has a problem for every solution, and this isn’t getting us anywhere.
What I need is a partner that can come up with solutions instead of tearing apart all my plans.
“Maybe you could pretend to go out shopping with her. Then she just won’t come back,” Adam suggests.
I smile as I realize it’s my turn to critique his plans. “Where will I say she is when I return to the palace alone?”
Adam scratches his chin. I want to gloat and ask him how it feels to have his brilliant ideas shot down. I mentally shake myself; this isn’t the time to be seeing who has the best critique. Maybe the lack of sex has us both on edge.
“Listen, the Alphas all care about Rose. They won’t let anything happen to her. If we tell them not to tell anyone or confront the king because that will endanger Rose, they won’t. They’re the only people in this palace who are on our side. They won’t do anything that could land you, me, or Rose in trouble. We need their help, hun.”
Adam pauses silently for a minute, and I’m afraid he’s looking for another way to shut down my latest suggestion.
“All right. Find a way to meet up with them and tell them what’s going on. Let them know that whatever they do, they can’t let the king find out that they know about his plans. We’ll make arrangements to meet with them all and discuss the safest way to get Rose out of here. For now, I have to go before the king gets suspicious as to my whereabouts.”
I nod and hurry to give him a hug. I’m happy that he’s agreed to let the Alphas help. I know they can save my friend from this mad king.
It’s time for the four Alphas to save their woman.
