“Hey, you, Get back here!”

I freeze in my tracks, hearing Alpha Red-Headed Guy shout at me to stop. I am the Alpha King. He is nothing but a ginger peon. Yet, I find myself unable to take another step.

I don’t understand this. His Alpha voice shouldn’t have any effect on me whatsoever. Could it be that I’m just scared?

Of course not! I’m Alpha Gene! My mommy didn’t raise me to be scared of anything.

Still, as I hear the heavy footsteps of Alpha Red-Headed Guy approaching me, I swallow hard. Why can’t I remember anyone’s name anymore? Maybe if I could use his name and command him, he’d have to leave me alone. But it’s been a few weeks since I saw these guys, and the only names I can remember are Mary and Reba. Wait–those are girls’ names. The Alphas have girl names?

“You, turn around and look at me,” Alpha Red-Headed Guy demands.

“Me?” I say in a high-pitched voice. “Oh, I’m just a little old lady maid, sir. I’m no one.”

“Do what Alpha Eli says.” That’s Alpha Curly-Haired Guy. I’d recognize his voice anywhere. It booms across the room, making my bones shake.

Slowly, I turn and look at Alpha Eli–the one with the bright red hair. I keep my own long black hair over my face. This wig is very flattering. When I caught my reflection in the mirror earlier, I couldn’t help but think about how nice it would be to feed myself grapes.

A big grin breaks out across Alpha Elliott’s face. “Well, well. If it isn’t exactly who we are looking for.” Turning to the older man standing across the room, the one who owns this house, I think, he asks, “Did you know he was here?”

“I… I…” he stammers. Alpha Sandy? Is that his name? Is that a boy name or a girl name?

“You what?” That’s Alpha Mary. I turn to look at him, fluttering my eyelashes, hoping he might also think I’m lovely enough to feed him grapes.

“Yes, I knew he was here.” The Alpha who owns the house hangs his head. “He’s just a harmless old man.”

“That harmless old man tried to kill your queen!” Alpha Curly Haired Guy barks. “He would’ve killed her with your next king still in her womb.”

“Oh, fiddle faddle!” I declare. “I’m just a harmless old man.”

Alpha Eleanor turns and looks at me. “I thought you were just a little old lady.” He pulls my long black wig off my head and throws it on the ground.

I feel exposed, but I stand up straight. “I am not. I am your king, King Gene! And I demand all of you to bow to me at once.”

“Oh, no you don’t,” Alpha Reba says, coming over toward us with his arms folded across his chest. “You abdicated the throne. You are no longer the king.”

“And until my son is old enough to rule, the four of us will be in charge of the kingdom,” Alpha Mary says, looking at me like he’d like to snap my puny little neck.

“But that’s not fair!” I shout, stomping my foot. “This is my kingdom! Mine! I took it fair and square!”

“By faking your parents’ deaths and locking them up!” Alpha Elizabeth says.

“That’s not true!” I bellow, but when I stop and think about it, I believe it actually is true. That does sound like the very thing I did. “Well, I mean… that was a long time ago. It’s my kingdom now.”

“Not for long.” Alpha Mary pulls out a piece of paper from his back pocket. It’s rolled up, but he unfurls it and sets it on a table. “You’re going to sign this, and then this matter will be settled once and for all.”

“Sign what?” I bark at him. “I’m not signing anything. Guards, arrest this man!” I point at Alpha Mary, but no one else moves. I remember then that we’re not in my castle. “Alpha Sandy, send your guards to arrest this man.”

Alpha Sandy lets out a long sigh and runs his hand down his face. “I’ve told you a hundred times, Gene. My name is Alpha Andy.”

“Oh, that’s right.” Hmm. I usually at least get the first letter right. “Well, arrest him.” I am still pointing at Mary. “And him! And him! And him!” I point at all of the Alphas. “Arrest all of them and take me to my castle.”

“No.” Alpha Alice crosses her hands across her chest. “I’m staying out of this. If these Alphas want to take you, so be it. I know how the contest was supposed to go, and if one of them had a male baby, then that will be the next Alpha King. I’m not getting on their bad side.”

“Appalling!” I shout. “You scoundrel! You’re nothing more than the asshole on a maggot! Alpha Alice, arrest yourself as well.”

“Gene,” Alpha Curly-Haired Guy says, sauntering over with a pen in his hand. “Just sign the fucking document and come with us like a good little boy, huh?”

“Little boy? I have feathered boas in my closet that are older than you!” I shout, spraying him with spittle.

He wipes his face. “Feathered boas? In your closet? You’re kinkier than I am, and that’s saying something. Sign it.”

I stare at him, giving him the death eye, the sort of stare a kindergarten teacher can use from fifty feet away to put the fear of Goddess in any of her charges.

He doesn’t budge.

I crane my neck and stare harder, really getting into it, peering at him like he’s a speck forty-eight miles away and I am straining to see him.

“Gene? Are you okay?” Alpha Curly-Haired Guy asks. “You, uh, need to go to the bathroom or something?” I say nothing, only continue to give him my most meaningful, menacing look. He turns to Alpha Alice. “Does he wear adult diapers or something? We may have a mess on our hands. With four babies, we know how to change diapers, but I’m not changing his.”

“I think he’s trying to make you change your mind,” Alpha Alice says quietly.

That’s it. We’re on the right track. I growl at him, low in my throat.

He tips his head to the side.

I growl lower, like a boat motor in deep water.

His head is now sideways as he stares at me.

I am a conundrum. An enigma. I am a puzzle, and he is puzzling over me.

My grow becomes a bark. I bare my teeth, gnashing them at him.

I can see he is scared now as his eyes widen and he runs his hand through his mop of curls.

“Okay,” Alpha Mary says, snatching the pen from Alpha Curly-Haired Guy. “That’s enough of that. Just write your name right here, and we won’t kill you, okay?”

I perk up at the mention of dying. “Kill me? Since when was there talk of you killing me?”

“Well, we can’t just let you continue to run around free, causing havoc and bringing mischief wherever you go,” Alpha Eliza says.

I giggle and cover my mouth with my palm. “I am full of mischief, that’s true.”

“We won’t kill you if you sign it.” Alpha Mary taps the paper where I’m supposed to write my name.

I raise my pen, thinking not being dead is probably better than being dead, but then another thought crosses my mind. “Wait–are you putting me in prison?” I think of my poor father down in the dungeon, losing his mind, my mother locked in the tower, missing her Gene-Gene. I don’t wanna be like them.

“Nope. Just sign.” Alpha Mary taps again.

I stare at him for a moment, trying to decide if I can trust him, but then Alpha Elsbeth pokes me hard in the back, and I know I’m out of options. I write my name on the paper.

Alpha Mary snatches it away before I have a chance to even dot the I in my name. Thankfully, there is no I in my name.

“Good. Thank the Goddess that’s all over,” Alpha Reba says.

“What are you going to do with me?” I feel a ripple of fear wash through me as I realize I am no longer king and have no control over anything.

“Goddess!” Alpha Mary takes a big step backward.

I look down. Someone must’ve spilled a cup of stinky water because there’s a puddle on the floor beneath my skirt.

“Don’t you worry, stinky pants,” Alpha Curly-Haired Guy says. “You’ll find out soon enough. Besides, I think you’ll like it. You’re already dressed for it.” He winks at me, and I gulp for air.

I’m dressed like a woman.

Is he gonna make me feed him grapes?
