*Tristan*

I’m horrified—but looking up at the faces of the two Alphas who have baby boys—Eli and Mark—I see a whole new level of nightmare in their eyes.

The baby blanket left behind is blue, one that was embroidered by Mark’s pack members exclusively for Rose’s pups. Some very sweet older ladies had given us a gift of several pink and blue blankets for the newborns, so we’d always have plenty, and the look on Rose’s face when she handled the soft, warm fabric is something I’ll never forget.

But now… now one of those same blankets is lying on the floor of the front seat of this car, covered in dangerous-looking shards of broken glass—and drops of blood. Eli and Mark look like they’re somewhere between throwing up and wanting to tear whoever did this to shreds.

I’m not far from that feeling myself, since clearly all the pups were in this car and now, we have no idea where they are. My little Trisha is missing… she’s somewhere, and the person who has her right now is very evil indeed.

But it’s not the driver of this car, who is slumped over the steering wheel moaning. I snap out of my horror just long enough to notice that this car is very familiar. It has come from Gene’s fleet of cars from the royal garage of Black Rock, the cars I’ve often used myself for various trips out of the castle since I’d begun staying there for that stupid competition. Well, it wasn’t stupid in the sense that I got to meet Rose, which probably would have been impossible before, but the last thing on my mind right now was being the next Alpha King.

No, right now, I want to drag whoever it is moaning in the front seat of this car out by her hair. Yes, it’s a woman, and something about her is way too familiar.

By now, Eli has stepped forward and grabbed the blanket, and after he shakes off the broken glass and takes a whiff of the pup’s scent who’d used to be wrapped up in it, I know for sure that I never want to be on the receiving line of the kind of anger that’s seething inside him right now.

I step around him to the front and yank the woman’s head back. The airbag had deployed, and it was half-deflated in front of her, but that hadn’t kept the glass from cutting up her face.

And boy, do I know that face.

As I pull her out of the car, she’s helping out at first, pulling herself to her feet.

“Barbara,” I say in a voice that doesn’t even sound like me.

She coughs, and her eyes go wide, then she instantly goes limp as though her legs have suddenly failed her. “I… I can’t… move,” she says in an obviously fake faint voice.

I let go and drop her to the ground, but she suddenly finds the strength and rights herself, standing up. She stares at us all for a moment and then says, “Thank the Goddess you’re here!”

“What?!” I ask, being in no mood for her crap.

She seems to relax a bit as if she’d worked out the story in her head and thinks she can pull it off.

“You’re here!” she says. “I caught the kidnapper red-handed, some bitch girl. And I was taking her… taking her back with the babies when she hit me and caused me to lose control of the car. Yes, that’s what happened… I mean, she’s escaped!”

“We all know that’s bullshit, Barbara,” says Reece. “Which way did she fucking go? You’d better talk quick before I let one of these guys tear you to shreds.” He points his thumb back toward Eli and Mark, who both still have looks on their faces that I can’t even describe, looks that make Barbara’s eyes go wide again with the deepest level of fear I’ve ever seen.

“I-I don’t know,” she says. “She hit me! And it made me wreck the car while she escaped!”

Eli made a move toward her, and I said, “I strongly suggest you drop the crap, Barbara. You’re just barely alive right now, and I’d highly recommend that you don’t piss us off for one millisecond longer than you already have.”

“Okay… okay,” she says. “Just don’t kill me.”

“No promises,” says Eli in a low, guttural voice that I didn’t even recognize as his. “Which way?” He’s using his Alpha tone, and it works easily on Barbara. I’m surprised he’s in a state of mind where he can engage his Alpha voice.

“I… I didn’t see much,” she says, suddenly very cooperative. “But I remember hearing the babies cry over to the right.”

I shudder at the description. The children were crying…. How long had they been without food? Was that Retta person hurting them? She didn’t have her own pups, so she surely couldn’t nurse them, and since she’s a kidnapper, she certainly can’t care for them. Time is ticking away on their safety.

Evidently, Eli feels the same way because, with a single nod, he starts running off in the direction Barbara had indicated, with Mark and Reece close on his heels.

I’m not going to waste time dealing with Barbara. I bark out some quick instructions to Mark’s warriors, who know instinctively that their own Alpha’s words would have been the same, ordering them to throw Barbara into Mark’s dungeon until we figure out what to do with her.

I hear Barbara’s pleading cries and fake moans of pain disappear into the background as I shift and follow Eli and the other Alphas.

We have to find our children, and fast.

*Rose*

“They’re not answering me,” I say. “Shelby, why wouldn’t they answer me?!” I’m starting to panic, and it’s hard to catch my breath.

“Rose, I’m sure it’s nothing,” Shelby says, trying to calm me down.

I’m pacing around the room now, and any attempts to keep me lying in that bed are definitely useless at this point. I know everyone wants me to take care of myself and be healthy when the babies return, but what difference does it make right now?

There is no nightmare worse than having your children missing and in the hands of some horrible people. Nothing worse except… and I’m not going there. No, I am most definitely not going to go there. My Alphas would never let anything that terrible happen.

I reach out to them again, this time calling for Tristan. Maybe he’ll have some answers for me. Not knowing is the worst part… well, almost the worst part.

‘Little flower,’ he says. ‘We’re getting closer. Please, please try to relax. Just work on getting enough milk ready for the pups when we bring them home.’

Tears come to my eyes. I’m so worried about finding them, about whether they’re okay, whether anyone has physically harmed them, and it’s been at least an hour since I thought about how they haven’t eaten lately. I thought about it when I was pumping, but that had been so long ago. What kind of mother am I?! My babies are off somewhere starving, and I’m just sitting here doing absolutely nothing to help them!

“Rose?”

I barely hear Shelby’s voice as I’m walking out of my room.

“Rose!” she says, getting louder as I move farther down the hall. “Rose! Please come back!”

“I can’t!” I scream. “I have to do something! I can’t just sit here pacing around a room when my babies are starving!”

I hear Shelby’s footsteps running after me, and there are a few nurses also running after me, and I can hear them frantically grabbing supplies as they break into a run. If the whole damn castle is going to follow me to rescue my babies, then so be it. But I’m sure as hell not waiting here for one second longer while my innocent babies need me.

As I head out of the castle, I run straight into Adam.

“Rose,” he says. “Please, it’s too dangerous out there.” No doubt Shelby had mind-linked with him to stop me at the front gate.

“Dangerous… dangerous is exactly why I’m going!” I scream at him. “My pups, my innocent babies, are out there where it’s dangerous, and I’m going to help bring them home!”

I can see by the look in his eyes that he knows it’s hopeless to try to stop me. By now, Shelby has caught up with me as well.

“If you’re going,” she says, “we’re going with you. Just give me five minutes to let these ladies put together some proper supplies for you. Please, Rose. Just five minutes.”

I look into her eyes, and I can see my friend is with me now in this, so I nod, and she calls out lots of orders as the nurses and servants gather backpacks full of supplies for pumping and for just general traveling. It’s much sooner than five minutes before everything is ready, so I throw on a backpack and head out the door with Shelby and Adam by my side and a bunch of warriors backing us up.

I open the mind-link to all four of my Alphas.

‘Where are you?’ I ask.
