‘Someone’s here,’ Eli says in the mind-link, and then things go quiet, which can’t be good. But all I can do is wait until he can talk to me again.

I look around at my surroundings again, and I realize what a nice hotel this once was. The furniture is made from solid oak, and it looks like someone spent a lot of money on all the details, everything from the bedding to the beautiful art that now dangles crooked on the walls.

They probably spent too much money, and that’s why it was abandoned. But what’s important right now isn’t the building’s past but how we can manage to escape from it.

I peek out into the hallway, and finding no one, I sneak over to the room where I’d left Trevor. Whoever these people are, they’re not guarding us individually, but apparently, the entire floor has guards at either side. I’d been trying the windows in every room, and so far, none of them open. I guess they didn’t want guests falling out of the windows in this old resort.

I’ve been up and down this entire floor, and they’re not holding Eli here, so they must have some special guards on him. It’s obvious he’s the Alpha, so that does make sense. But if I can’t get out any windows here, and they’re guarding all the exits, I’m not sure how we’ll get to him anyway.

“He went silent,” says Trevor when I walk in.

“I know,” I say. “And I don’t like it at all.”

“I’m sure he just needs to focus,” he says.

“Probably, but I’m still worried,” I say. “His hand is in pretty bad shape.”

Trevor nods. “Any luck with the windows?” he asks.

“Nope,” I say. “There aren’t any that open; they’re all just pretty picture windows for looking at the forest, which admittedly is a great view.”

“I’ve never heard of this place before,” he says. “But it was probably pretty nice in its day.”

The door opens, and we both spin around to look, ready to shift, but it’s just the other warriors who had come with us to find Eli–Brent and Sean.

“Shit, you scared me,” I say. “Knock maybe?”

They both nod and plop down in the chairs. “No luck,” says Brent. There’s a fire escape, but you have to get through to the stairwell, and they have two guys guarding it.”

“Well, there are four of us,” I say. “So what’s the problem?”

“None, except that we’re all generally injured, and whatever they shot us up with is making me woozy,” he says.

“I have to admit, I’m feeling that, too,” says Trevor. “But we need to get to Alpha Eli. We didn’t come all the way out here to rescue him just to lose him again.”

“Agreed,” I say. “But we need a solution. So, two guys are guarding the stairs. I saw just one on the other side, but that’s just on our floor. I’m not sure how many guards would be in the rest of the stairway.”

“Well, I’d rather fight two I’m sure of than one after another,” says Sean.

I have to agree with him. “So what do these guys look like?” I ask.

“Like they’re starving,” Brent says. “I’m pretty sure all these people have been here for a long time. You’d think there’d be a lot of game around here, so I don’t know what’s up with that.”

“It’s the stupid rules.” I heard her voice before she even started entering the room since the guys had left the door ajar.

We all prepare to shift, but when we see her, we realize she’s only a kid, maybe sixteen or so. I relax a little but stay alert and walk over to her, peering through the door to be sure she doesn’t have backup, which she doesn’t, so I close it behind her. We don’t need any more surprises.

“What kind of rules?” asks Trevor.

“Stupid ones,” she answers. “Rules that say only the hunters can hunt, for one. We’re all perfectly capable of shiftin’ and huntin’ a meal, but Alpha Pete’s got it in his head that we all need special duties.”

“I didn’t peg any of these guys for an Alpha,” I say.

“That’s ‘cause he’s not,” she says.

“Rogues wouldn’t have an Alpha anyway,” says Trevor.

The girl knitted up her brow and glared at him. “We ain’t rogues!” she hollered.

“All right,” I say calmly, not wanting to upset her more. She is clearly far too young to be sent to check on a bunch of prisoners by herself, so someone here isn’t treating her very well. I thought about what Eli told me about the girl who they’d sent in with him. She must be the same girl. “You’re a pack, then. What’s the pack name?”

“Stone Creek pack,” she says, pronouncing the E in Creek like it is an I. “This is our territory, and Alpha Pete got pissed off that you kept driving through like we was nothing.”

“Alpha Pete…” I say. “You say he’s not an Alpha, yet you call him one?”

The girl nods and looks like tears are about to form in her eyes as she says, “His cousin was Alpha Andrew. He got shot.”

My heart skips a couple of beats, wondering if our captors have weapons.

“They came here and took him, hauled him up to a tree, and shot him!” she says, and then the tears flow. “He was my Pa.” She plops down in a chair and puts her face in her hands while she sobs.

“You’re the Alpha’s daughter?” I say softly. She nods, then I continue, “Who did that to him?”

The girl looks up at me, and a change has come over her; her eyes are glazed over from tears, but I can clearly see the anger in them. “Kane,” she says softly.

“Alpha Kane killed your father?” I ask. “Why?”

“I don’t know,” she says. “I was just a pup. But I remember clear as day when his blood splattered all over everywhere.”

I pull a chair up next to her and put my arm around her. “I’m so sorry that happened to you, dear,” I say. “What’s your name?”

“Heather,” she says.

“Heather, that’s a pretty name,” I say. “I’m Kelly, and this is Trevor, Brent, and Sean. We’re not here to hurt anyone in your pack. We came to rescue my brother from someone who was holding him several miles from here.”

“Your brother?” she asks, her sobs slowing. It was clear that no one had spoken to her in a gentle way for years.

“He’s the one you patched up,” I say. “He really appreciated your help, too. You did a great job.”

“You mean, the mean Alpha is your brother?” she asks.

I shake my head. “He’s not mean,” I say. “And I should know. I grew up with him.” I smile at her, and she smiles back weakly.

“Then he can’t be mean, then,” she says.

Trevor and the others have backed away, sensing that the girl needs some time talking to a woman. So they sit across the room, trying their best to look non-threatening. That’s a challenge for Brent, who’s over six-foot-six and pretty muscular, being one of our best warriors. I can also sense that the girl and her pack—if that’s what this truly is—need some serious help. We’ll have to help her, but we’re running out of time to get to Rose.

“Heather,” I say. “We really need your help here. You see, we have a common enemy, and we don’t have a lot of time.”

“Common enemy?” she asks.

I nod. “Alpha Kane.”

Her eyes widen and she wipes away the last remnant of a tear on her cheek. “You’re gonna fight Alpha Kane?”

“Yes,” I say. “And we need to do it fast. He’s holding someone hostage that we love very much, and we need to rescue her.”

“Her?”

I nod again. “Yes, she’s a woman, and she’s going to have pups any minute now, so we need to get to her quickly. Can you get us out of here? I know you need help, and I promise that we’ll come and help you just as soon as we’re done dealing with Kane.”

“I’ve heard that before,” she says, sinking back into her chair, looking dejected.

“Someone promised to help before?” I ask.

She nods. “Alpha Kane,” she says. “But then he and my pa argued about something, and he shot him!”

“I’m so sorry about that, Heather,” I say. “But we’re nothing like that awful Alpha Kane.”

“I know,” she says. “It’s just, you might get hurt and not come back if you’re fightin’ him.”

“We’ll come back,” I say.

And I mean it. Whatever is happening with this girl and her pack, they desperately need someone powerful to step in and handle things. Sure, this is a luxury hotel, but it’s been a long time since it was restocked with supplies, and this Pete person seems like he’s gone off the deep end, yet they’re stuck with him as a leader.

She looks up at me for a while as if she’s trying to figure it out, then she takes a deep breath. “I know where your Alpha is,” she says. “I’ll take you to him.”
