*Rose*

“Diana!” I have to shout out to her as she pushes through the door at the end of the tunnel, and I can see a flight of stairs leading out to the forest. “I need to rest!”

“We’re almost there,” she tells me, but I’m breathing so hard, I don’t know how I will make it up the stairs. And if there are any kind of enemies lurking about up there, well, they may as well just kill me now and save me the horror of having to drag my massive pregnant lady body up those stairs.

“Come on!” Diana says, sounding a bit encouraging but mostly irritated. “You can do it!”

“I really don’t think I can!” I can barely get the words out before a horrible pain hits me in the side. I double over, screeching, and Diana comes running back to me.

“What is it?” she asks, and I can hear the fear in her voice.

“The babies,” I say, suddenly feeling like I need to lay down so that I can start pushing or something. “I believe my children have picked this most inconvenient time to make their appearance in the world.” As another contraction hits, I think about everything I’ve read. Wasn’t I supposed to be counting? Mark was going to be the one to count! He was supposed to do that while Tristan said soothing things, and Reece feeds me ice chips.

Eli was supposed to rub my feet….

Nothing is going as planned!

“Where is Dr. Panthergash?” I snarl as Diana stands near me, looking helpless.

“Your doctor’s name is Dr. Panthergash?” she asks me.

I look up into her eyes and shout back, “I don’t have any fucking idea what my doctor’s name is!”

Her gaze widens as I have alarmed her, and she says, “Okay, sorry. We have a pack healer, but I doubt you’re going to want him to help you.”

“No!” I yell at her, and then I start to cry. “I’m sorry. It’s not your fault. You’re lovely, Diana. It’s just… this really hurts, and I have no idea where my men are!”

“Well, I told them I’d get you out of the castle,” she says. “I can check with them, but one way or another, you’re going to have to get out of this tunnel, and there’s a good chance that, if your Alphas are storming the castle, the others who know about this tunnel are going to come flying down it soon. So…”

My eyes go to the stairs and I can’t help but curse beneath my breath. I don’t want to get run over by fleeing people from the castle, but those stairs look so daunting. They’re steep, and there has to be at least twenty of them.

I think I hear a noise behind me and have to wonder if that’s someone coming through the tunnel. Reluctantly, I head toward the stairs, but as my foot comes down on the first one, another contraction hits, and I know I can’t go any higher. I cry out in agony and put both feet back on the ground before the step. That’s an option for now, but if I’d already been five or ten steps up, I might’ve fallen.

I sink to the ground, my tears falling harder as I sob, “I can’t do it!”

“Sure you can!” Diana says, tugging on my arm.

I jerk away from her. “No, I can’t! I can’t do it! You should just leave me here and save yourself!”

“Don’t be stupid!” Diana says. “I’m not leaving you here. Just… let me check with the Alphas. Maybe they’ll know what to do. I would carry you, but I don’t think I can lift you with all of those pups.”

“No, you couldn’t. No one can! I weigh more than a fucking mountain! Those stupid Alphas did this to me! Made me all fat and unmovable! I hate them!” I don’t hate them, though. I love them. I do wish they were here to help–and also so that I could slap them senseless.

I continue to sit on the ground crying, screaming with every contraction as Diana stands between me and a slow trickle of wolves that comes through the tunnel. They all look at me funny, but none of them attempts to bite me or anything as they head up the stairs.

My only thoughts are that I want these babies out of me so that I can move my body again. That and where the hell are my Alphas?

*Tristan*

Alpha Kane is dead. We all had a chance to chomp into him before he died, and now, his body lies bleeding all over the carpet in one of his rooms. It’s satisfying, knowing we have vanquished one of our enemies. Stephen isn’t much of a threat compared to Kane, so hopefully, now, we can go back to dealing with the most important matters at hand–Rose and the pups.

Thoughts of her enter my mind as I turn to the others. ‘We need to find Rose,’ I remind them.

‘Why don’t you ask your little friend Danish or whatever the fuck her name is,’ Mark snarls. I’m sure she’s taking excellent care of her.’

‘It’s like you’re fucking jealous of the woman who is trying to get Rose away from the fighting,’ Reece says, shaking his head.

‘I think we should call for a transport vehicle before we even find her,’ I say. ‘We need to get her out of here, away from the threat of Kane’s troops that might rally yet, even though he’s dead. Mark, how far is it to your territory from here?’

‘Not too far,’ he says, still angry. ‘Maybe twenty minutes by transport.’

‘Can you call for a vehicle?’ I ask him. ‘Let’s take her there. I think, if she’s about to have the babies, we should have time, and that will give her a chance to be more comfortable away from this nasty place.’ I didn’t even like being in Kane’s castle, and I wasn’t about to pop some other people out of my body.

‘Fine,’ he says. ‘I’ll get the transport on the way and alert the healers.’

‘We should see if we can get Dr. Penderghan to meet us there as well,’ Reece suggests, and I like that idea.

While those two are working on that, I begin to try to connect with this Diana person, but before I can even start to formulate a message to her, I hear her voice in my head. ‘Hey! Where are you guys? Rose is going into labor!’

‘Shit,’ I mutter. ‘In the castle. Where are you?’ Before she answers, I realize that I should be able to talk to Rose directly now since Kane is dead.

‘We are at the bottom of the stairs that leads out through the tunnel.’ She tells me quickly how to find the tunnel, and I signal for the other two to follow me. We head down the hallway, and before long, I see the doorway she’s talking about. It’s in the wall, the way that the other secret passages back in Gene’s castle were situated. And a few wolves and a couple of people in their human forms are going through it.

We don’t hesitate to blaze right through, running at full speed. We dodge around a couple of kids and almost knock an older wolf over, but before long, we are ahead of the pack. While I’m running, I try to call Rose. I just want to hear her voice.

‘Don’t worry, little flower,’ I tell her. ‘We are coming to save you!’

‘Where the fuck are you?’ she screams. ‘I hate all of you, you stupid bastards! Why did you have to put these giant babies in me?’

‘Well, in fairness, they were a lot smaller going in,’ I tease, and when she screams a string of obscenities at me, I realize that probably wasn’t the smartest thing I could’ve said to her.

But then I see her–sitting on the ground, crying, clearly in pain–and as beautiful as ever. As we run toward her as fast as we can, all I can think about is how lucky I am that she is mine–she loves me, and I love her, and maybe she loves these other guys, too, but that woman is mine, and I will take care of her. No matter what.
