We all watch as the king taps his fingers on the windowsill, looking out over the fertile green lands of the prosperous kingdom. Prosperous, happy, and headed for absolute disaster if we don’t win this war and stop Alpha Kane.

The battle line is engraved deep in the sand, and Alpha Kane isn’t backing down. His threats have been made more real when he sent some shifters from his pack to attack the student healers in the woods as they gathered some herbs for their medicinal potions. The attack was unexpected and brutal, and the message was clear: Alpha Kane is willing to spill any and all blood to show his wrath and prove his strength.

“I need the four of you to be in the front of the battle line. Why are none of you in the front on this formation plan you just showed me?” King Gene asks.

“The formation we’re opting for is more effective. If they think that you only sent the royal soldiers, they’ll relax, not knowing that we’re right in the middle. We’ll have the element of surprise on our side,” Mark replies.

The king stops and turns to face us. “Ahh, you will have the element of surprise on your side. They won’t see you coming. I think this is the best plan I have ever thought of.”

Wait, what? Had he suddenly adopted our plan as his own?

“Yes, it seems you do have fabulous plans, Your Majesty,” Tristan cheers, not caring to hide the hint of sarcasm in his voice.

“We have one request, though. Rose is carrying our children. We can’t all possibly go to war and leave her alone. If anything should happen to us, we need someone here to protect her,” I add.

A dark shadow passes over the king’s face. “The Breeder will be fine. I need the four of you on the battlefield. She is safe here. I will make sure to put the best guards on duty to protect these walls and everyone within them.”

“We fear the real danger is within these very walls,” Tristan utters. I smirk.

“Did you say something?” the king asks him.

“Nope. So, are you going to be in the front or the back of the battle line?” Tristan inquires. It seems Tristan just woke up today and chose violence.

“I am not going to fight. I will stay here and man this station as king. The people need me. We can’t have the king going to war and dying.” he answers.

“I see,” Tristan responds.

I frown. Talk about double standards.

We all sit in different places in Eli’s room as we try to come up with a plan to make sure we don’t leave Rose without a proper guard. The king is adamant about the four of us going to war, but that will leave Rose without our protection.

“We can’t all go,” Mark states.

“When we leave, the king will do a head count if he has to, to make sure that we all go,” Reece counters.

“We need a plan. Rose will be at the mercy of Emily and her cousin if we all go,” Mark points out.

“Excuse me, we’re here. I bought a new pair of nun chucks that will deter any attack, I assure you,” Kelly argues, as she nods her head toward Shelby.

“Yeah, we’re here. I don’t know about fighting with nun chucks, but I do pack a mean punch. Emily’s Botox-filled face won’t know if I hit her with a hammer or rock,” Shelby jokes as she balls her small hand into a fist and blows on it menacingly.

“The two of you are great fighters, don’t get me wrong. But, what happens when Shelby is busy making her Adam sing soprano, or when Kelly is busy shopping for a new pair of boots? You need extra help,” Tristan insists.

I smile as I notice Shelby blushing.

“So, what do you plan on doing? Unless one of you has a cloak of invisibility, I don’t see how you can stay here unnoticed by the king or anyone else for that matter,” Kelly explains her concern.

“Say, Tristan, don’t you have an invisibility cloak in your bag of tricks?” I ask.

“I wish. It would have been a great thing to have in my college days. Imagine sneaking into the girls’ locker rooms unnoticed,” he says, deadly serious, and I shake my head.

“Reece can stay behind,” Mark suggests.

“Why me?” Reece asks.

“You’d be the perfect person to protect Rose back here,” Mark explains.

“Do you think I’d be useless on the battlefield?” Reece asks, sounding angry at the suggestion.

“As a matter of fact, your job will be the most taxing. Emily and her cousin are sneaky and even more dangerous. If you were to be discovered defying the king by staying back, you would be in immense trouble. Also, Rose is the most priced treasure who we are trusting you to guard,” Mark assures him as he gives Rose a sideways glance and winks at her.

“The king will still expect to see the four of us leaving this castle, not three,” Reece points out.

“You’re right,” I agree, and I hope someone will come up with a workable solution to execute this plan.

“Reece will leave with us, but then turn back and return to Rose. He’ll alert her that he’s outside her window, and she’ll open it so that he can climb in,” Tristan says.

“I would have to sneak in back here unnoticed. Shouting boom shakalaka laka from outside to get her to open the window will not be inconspicuous,” Reece counters.

“How about you be a Romeo? I mean out of all of us, you’re the most romantic, yet you couldn’t think of the most romantic scene in Romeo and Juliet? Throw some small pebbles at her window to let her know you’re outside. Just don’t shout ‘Juliet, oh where art thou, Juliet?’” Tristan suggests.

We all turn to look at Tristan. Who would have thought Tristan knew who Romeo and Juliet were?

“Hey, I studied the book in school. In case you didn’t know, I minored in literature. If you want to speak the love language fluently, study literature.” He shrugs.

“That’s so romantic,” the three ladies coo as they look at him with admiration. Even without the help of his toys, he can make girls weak. I roll my eyes.

“But we would need to make him look unrecognizable, in case someone sees him around the palace. He would have to blend in,” Shelby adds.

“I thought we figured that none of us has a cloak of invisibility. How will we make me somewhat invisible?” Reece asks.

Shelby and Kelly exchange a look and smile brightly at Reece. His eyes dart from one lady to the other.

“Guys, I’m scared,” he whimpers.

“Makeover!” the girls all scream at once.

I plant my face into my palm. The poor guy is in trouble. I’d grown up with Kelly, and she’d always practiced her make-up skills on me. I remembered the hard patting with a sponge on my poor skin, all in the name of blending, and the uncomfortable glide of the eyeliner on my eyelids. Being told to sit still or she would mistakenly take out my eye hadn’t made the experience any sweeter. How did women do that to themselves every day?

“We’ll all wait in Rose’s room for your return. We’ll gather some servant clothes and make you look just like one of them,” Shelby says excitedly.

“Oh, we’ll also need a wig to hide that hair,” Kelly says.

“What do you think? Dreadlocks?” Shelby asks.

Kelly studies Reece for a bit. “No, his face has a round shape. Dreadlocks won’t look nice on him. Maybe a nice bowl cut wig?”

“Yeah, that could work. And some dark brown contact lenses. Do you think he’ll need some prosthetics? Maybe for his nose and cheekbones?” Shelby asks as she folds her arms across her chest, studying Reece like he’s a science project.

“No. He won’t need a prosthetic for his nose. It is already big. We could make it smaller by shaving it down with some dark contouring,” Kelly offers.

Reece puts a hand to his nose. “Shave my nose? As in cut it?”

We're all watching, holding in our laughter.

“What shade do you say we use as a foundation? We can’t keep his natural tone, though. Maybe make him look a bit paler. Servants are indoors most of the time and don’t have the honey tone his skin has.” The girls continue talking, ignoring Reece, who looks terrified.

“Yes. A pale foundation will make shaving his nose down easier,” Kelly agrees.

Reece looks at us, his eyes open wide. “Help.”
