‘The train!’ Rose is shouting in the mind-link to all of us, and she’s most definitely in a panic. ‘We have to stop the train! The babies are on the train!’

I want to ask her how she knows that, but I don’t think that’s important right now. According to Adam, Rose had suddenly stopped the car that she was riding in that was flying by an area that turned out to be exactly where Retta had walked by with the babies. Rose is in tune with the babies in a way I can’t even comprehend.

So, we’re headed toward the train.

Rather than run in wolf form, I thought it would be best that we preserve our strength for whatever assholes we have to fight when we get to town, so I had my warriors meet us at the highway with an SUV, and we’re currently driving there—fast.

I wish it were anywhere but Amityville. Yes, it’s a part of my pack lands, but that town is a place where the Alphas who came before me had turned away from a bit. We all get busy, and for the past few generations, other cities have needed more attention due to land disputes or other issues. As a result, there were some seedy characters still living there, even though I’ve been working on cleaning up the place since I took over.

And those seedy characters just might be the type to make money by selling babies.

“What is it?” asks Tristan.

I realize he’s been looking at my face, which has probably shown exactly how I feel about Amityville. “I still have a lot of work to do on that town,” I tell him. “And there are a few people there I wouldn’t trust.”

“You think they have the pups?” he asks.

I nod. “Yes,” I say. “And Amityville is a hub. If they’re on that train, or any others that may have left just moments before, the pups could be anywhere.”

The atmosphere in the SUV goes silent again, and I can tell that the driver has stepped just a little harder on the gas pedal. I go to work mind-linking with the people I do trust who make Amityville their home. If all the children are gone… or worse… then it’s all my fault for not getting a better handle on the place.

“Stop blaming yourself,” says Reece, as if he can read my mind. I look over at him and he continues, “I can see it on your face. We’re all Alphas, and we all rule over complex, powerful packs. Not everyone in a pack is the kind of person we’d want to call our brothers. But for most, their families have been with us for generations, so we can’t just abandon those people. And many have fated mates. We can’t separate those. So we deal with a lot of different personalities and we do our best to keep our people safe overall. You had no way of knowing that it would come to this.”

“Thanks,” I say, although I don’t exactly feel any better. It’s pretty much impossible to feel good right now with the pups missing. When little Matthew is safe in my arms, and the rest of the pups are safe with Rose and their own fathers, I’ll make plans to deal with the miscreants in Amityville once and for all.

I turn to look out the window as we reach the outskirts of the urban area. From this direction, we’ll have to pass through the entire city to get to the train station, where Rose is sure the pups are leaving on a train to who knows where. Unfortunately, our driver has to slow down to navigate the streets, and it feels like a slow crawl as we make our way to the train depot.

‘Where are you?’ asks Tristan in the mind-link that he’s brought all of us into.

‘In the city… whatever it’s called,’ says Rose. ‘Where is this damn train station?!’

‘Lenny knows the area well,’ I tell her. Her driver makes deliveries here often. ‘I’m sure he’s headed in the most direct way. We’re right behind you.’

‘I’m not going to wait!’ she says. ‘As soon as I see a train station, I’m out of this thing.’

‘Little flower,’ says Tristan. ‘Please let us come into the station with you. We don’t want to lose you, too.’

‘I’m getting out of this car, and I’m going wherever my babies are as soon as this car stops!’ she says.

I shake my head at him. There’s no sense in arguing with her at this point.

“I had to try,” he says.

We all chuckle lightly despite our dark moods. Apparently, now that she’s a mother, there’s no stopping Rose once she’s on a mission, especially one that involves her pups. And I know we all feel the same way right now.

After a few sharp turns, our driver gets us to the train station, and I see Rose there just as she runs into the grand entranceway. As expected, the place is packed to the brim with travelers, and many of them are traveling with pups. It’s going to take some doing to find the babies.

Although, four pups together will definitely stick out in a crowd.

None of us wait for the SUV to stop, and our driver does a great job of doing so in such a way that we can all get out quickly and take off in a run. None of us are shifting yet since none of the travelers are in wolf form, but if we don’t find those babies within a few seconds, I’m sure this train depot is about to be full of four very angry Alpha wolves.

“Rose!” I yell toward her. She turns around, and I see her face—and my heart breaks. Her eyes are bloodshot and tears are pouring out of her as she looks at all of us in desperation.

We don’t even have time to greet each other. Instead, we exchange knowing glances while each Alpha heads in a different direction, and Rose runs down the center, all desperately searching for the children through the packed crowd. I hear Rose’s voice call for them over and over again. The rest of us are quiet, carefully scouting out the crowd for signs of the pups.

I catch momentary glimpses of the faces of those around me. Some I recognize, but I don’t take the time to offer them more than a quick nod as they give me the sign of respect. I’m sure they can see that I’m in a hurry.

After a few minutes I’m seeing nothing, and I’m still hearing Rose’s voice in the background, so finally I ask someone, “We’re looking for small pups, newborns. Someone would have four of them.”

An older woman’s eyes went wide as she answered me. “The royal pups are missing?!”

“Yes,” I say. “And we need help finding them. There are two boys and two girls. Have you seen anyone in here carrying multiple children?”

The woman nods. “Yes,” she says. “Well, there was a man holding several, but I saw him give them to others. I didn’t like the looks of that man, either.”

“I knew we should have called the police, Kathy,” says another woman standing next to her.

“Next time, I’m listening to you, Mabel,” says the first woman.

“Can you describe who the man gave them to?” I ask.

Mabel nods. “Well, there was one man who was even shadier looking than the one passing them out. It must have been a boy because there was a blue blanket.”

“The next,” says Kathy, the other woman, “was a middle-aged couple. But I don’t know which child went to them because that poor dear wasn’t even wearing a blanket.”

“The third must have been a girl,” says Mabel. “She was in a pink blanket. That one went to a very sweet-looking woman who had a wide smile on her face. She must be very kind.”

“What about the fourth one?” I ask.

Mabel shakes her head. “There was no fourth one, Alpha.”

The rock in the pit of my stomach fell even deeper. Matthew…. If the man only had three pups, what happened to the fourth baby? And we’d seen a blue blanket in the car wreckage, with blood on it….

“Okay,” I say. “Do you know where they went?”

“Why, the couple and the shady-looking man, they went on trains going in opposite directions,” says Mabel. “Those left a few minutes ago. But the young lady…. Let me see.” She looks around the station and her eyes land on someone on the loading platform. “There. There’s the young lady, over there!”

I follow her pointing finger toward the platform, where a woman is cradling a pink bundle, cooing softly at the baby—while stepping onto a train.
