“You want me to go… where?”

I look at Alpha Kane, my alleged lover, a man who is supposed to truly care about me, and I can’t help but stare at him with my mouth hanging open. He’s got to be shitting me.

“Back to the castle, babe,” he says with a quick shrug of his shoulders like he’s not telling me to walk right back into the death trap I just escaped–barely escaped at that. “You need to get your ass back in there and convince Gene that you’ve been framed. Tell him that you were unjustly locked up while Alpha Tristan was acting king and made to look as if you had something to do with the fucking Breeder’s disappearance. Remind him that you’re on his side!”

“But–” I begin, not even able to consider what it will be like to walk back into that castle. I did everything I could to get out of there, including killing and kidnapping, but now, he wants me to go back.

“Come on, babe,” he says, stepping forward to drag his thumb along my cheek. “This is important. I wouldn’t ask just anyone to do it.”

Something about the way he’s looking at me has my breath hitching inside, my knees weakening. I can hardly even get an inhale. He’s not the best lover I’ve ever had. He’s not the most handsome man I’ve ever loved. He’s not the most loving man I’ve ever been with, and he’s not even the most powerful or rich. But there’s something about the way that he looks at me when he wants me to do something that makes me quake.

“You’ll do it, won’t you, babe? For me?” His warm breath fans my neck, and I can hardly keep from grabbing him and falling on the massive four-post bed that has no business being in a tent.

I bite down on my bottom lip, trying to convince myself that this is a bad idea, but then, my head begins to rock back and forth, and I realize I’m agreeing to this.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

“Thanks so much, babe,” he says. “I’ll have my best guards escort you to the secret tunnel that leads under the wall and back into the castle. You’ll come out near the throne room.”

I stare at him in disbelief, not sure if I actually heard everything he said just right. “But… if you knew about a secret tunnel that goes into the castle, why the fuck are you attacking the outside of the castle?”

“Because,” he says in a snide tone as he folds his arms across his muscular chest, “there’s a lock on the door, and until you escaped, we didn’t have the keys. If we tried to knock it down, it would’ve been loud, and the king would’ve heard. He would’ve sent his men in to kill us, and it would’ve been easy because we would’ve come out of the hallway in a single file line.” He rolls his eyes like I am the stupidest person who has ever walked the face of the earth.

I can think of a lot of reasons why that’s actually the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, but when I look at him, I can’t formulate a response. I feel myself growing wet again, my core clenching. “Do you think we have time for… one more… fuck?” I ask, my words coming out almost as pants as my body is drawn to him.

“You like the dick, huh?” he asks me, one eyebrow raised as he nods slowly. “All the women like the dick.”

I get the idea when he says “the dick” he means his own dick and not just dicks in general. I can’t respond to that either, but I do want him.

My tongue darts out to wet my lips, and I reach out to drag my hand along his muscular bicep, but he backs away from me, crossing back to the pants he’d taken off earlier. “Sorry, babe, we don’t have time right now.” He produces the keys that were in the pocket of the guard’s uniform I had been wearing earlier. “Here are the keys to the door.”

“How do you know those are the keys to the exact door you need to get into?” I can’t imagine that King Gene would let every guard carry a key to such an important door.

“Because one of them says, ‘master key,’ he says with a shrug.”

“But… what if that just means master key to the dungeon?” I’m really not convinced that these keys will let me into the castle. But who am I to deny my lover?

It’s like he’s cast some sort of spell over me!

“I’m certain that key will work, babe,” he says, and I love it when he calls me babe. “Now, let me escort you to your waiting escort who will escort you to the tunnel opening.” He gives me a smoldering look, and my knees bend of their own will.

I’ll have to shift to make the journey so I lean forward and kiss him one more time, savoring the feel of his mouth on mine. “Answer my mind-links more quickly this time won’t you, darling?” I ask him.

“You got it, babe,” he says, and then he takes the key ring and shoves it into my mouth.

I suppose that’s my cue to shift.

I take my wolf form and walk out with him, the keys dangling from my mouth. Six large male wolves are there, waiting to take me to the tunnel.

Kane bends down and strokes the fur on the top of my head. “I really do appreciate this, babe. You’re so loyal, so fierce, so… great. I believe I might be in love with you, babe.”

His voice is so smooth, even my wolf wants to drop down with my chest to the ground so he can mount me. I look up at him, and he smiles at me, and I want to use the mind-link to tell him I love him, too. I want to believe that when this is all over, the two of us will run off into the sunset, paw in paw, to start a new life together, maybe even have pups….

“Be careful–Betty.” Kane pets me one more time and walks away, leaving me crumbling inside.

Betty?

The fucker thinks my name is Betty???

I shouldn’t do this! I should turn around and walk away. I should just leave. He doesn’t love me! He doesn’t even know my fucking name!

The other six males are already around me, though, so I have no choice but to walk forward. I go along with them, trying not to cry. There’s nothing stranger than a crying wolf.

We trot along for a few miles before we come to a stop in front of a hole in the ground. At first, I can’t tell that it’s actually a tunnel opening, but when I stick my head in to check it out, one of the wolves pushes me in.

I land on the cold, hard ground in a pile, dropping the keys. I glare up at the other wolves, who are now a good six feet above my head. I could climb out, but not with them all standing there. It feels like they’ve shoved me into my own grave.

Thankfully, there is a tunnel. It’s narrow, and I’ll have to be careful because the ceiling is only a few inches above my head. It makes the tunnels in the castle look warm and inviting.

I can’t turn back now, so I head back to the miserable place I’ve just escaped, the keys back in my mouth.

The further along I walk, the wider the tunnel becomes, so I pick up my speed. It’s pitch black in here. The sun can’t get down here. But my wolf eyes help me navigate. It doesn’t take me too long to come to the door in question.

I take a deep breath and shift into my human form, taking the keys from my mouth. It’s made of thick wood, and though the weathering from being under the ground for probably hundreds of years has worn it down a bit, it is still sturdy.

With a deep breath, I take the master key and slide it into the keyhole and give it a turn.

Nothing happens. The key barely budges at all.

“Are you fucking kidding me!” I shout. I try it again, wiggling it harder, but nothing happens. Frustrated, I pull it out and look behind me. If I go back, will the wolves still be there, or will they have gone back to Kane? I don’t want to find out. It’s too far of a journey to keep heading back and forth.

I try a different key, but that one doesn’t work either. I try all of the keys. Not a fucking one does anything!

Outraged and frustrated, I drop my head to the door as tears cloud my vision.

Suddenly, I am pitched forward as a creak hits my ears. I almost fall on my face–as the door opens.
