If I’m being honest with myself, I have to say that I’m pretty intimidated here in the castle. When I was back in my own pack lands, everyone treated me like I was a king. I was from the best family in the pack, and everyone respected me.

But then I came here and saw what great shape warriors in Alpha Tristan’s pack, as well as the other Alphas, are in. When I started training my people, I just told them to follow their instincts and fight. Since I’ve been here, I have seen that it takes a lot of repetitive drills and practice scenarios to put together a real army.

I’ve been watching the other packs’ warriors while they’re out in formation practicing, and I have to say I’m nothing short of impressed. I’ve started to implement it for my own warriors.

I want to show that we can be just as good as them and that we can help the kingdom be its best, too.

Today, I have my people out, lined up, and we’re practicing drills just like all the other troops, although the other warriors haven’t been around in the past few days. I’m not sure what’s going on, but I’m going to be certain that my people are ready at a moment’s notice.

We’ve been practicing for four whole days straight, and I think we’re in great shape. The warriors all have smiles on their faces, and for the first time, they’ve managed to be in a perfectly straight line.

I’m smiling back at them when I hear Alpha Tristan calling for me in the mind-link. Instantly, I spring to attention; this could be the opportunity I’m looking for!

‘Alpha Tristan,’ I greet him in my mind. ‘It’s a pleasure to hear from you, sir! How might I be of assistance?’

‘Alpha Morris,’ he says, ‘I’m happy to hear that. I hope you’ve been able to keep busy at the palace.’

‘I have, sir,’ I tell him. ‘I’ve been whipping my warriors into shape so they can triumph in battle!’

‘That’s very… ambitious,’ he says, and then he’s quiet for a moment. ‘I do think you can help.’

‘Of course,’ I say, my face beaming with pride. One of the greatest Alphas in the kingdom, a possible successor to the throne, needs my help! ‘What can I do for you?’

‘We’ve just beat down Alpha Stephen’s army—at least for now,’ he explains to me. ‘Alpha Eli’s army had been holding down the front, and a lot of them are exhausted—”

I cut him off before he can continue. ‘My warriors and I will be happy to assist!’ I say. ‘Just tell me where we need to be, and we’ll fight off the enemy! We’ve been training for four full days….”

‘Um,’ he says, ‘for four days?’

‘Yes, sir!’ I say proudly. ‘I know it’s a lot, but I want my men and women in prime shape for battle.’

‘Uh,’ he says—he seems to be stuttering a bit for some reason—but he continues by saying, ‘Yeah… uh, sure. That’s a lot. All the same, I want you to follow my instructions exactly. Now, we need to get these warriors of Eli’s refreshed. With all the runners taking care of the armies that are facing Alpha Kane, we don’t have anyone to take care of Eli’s men and women.’

‘Sir?’ I ask. I’m not sure what it is he wants me to do. Doesn’t he want me to fight?

‘What we need right now is full support for our troops on the front,’ he says. ‘So I need you and your men and women to report to the mess hall and secure the rest of the food rations. The healer’s assistant will meet you there with medical supplies. I want you to bring all of that to the rear of the line on the western front, where you can assist the healers in refreshing Eli’s people.’

‘The rear of the line, sir?’ I ask. Why would he want to waste good fighting talent by sending us as the backup for cooks and healers?

‘That’s right,’ he says. ‘Supporting the troops is a very important job. We won’t win this war without it. You’ll be my right-hand man covering this for me. Are you up to the task?’

‘I—I am, sir,’ I say. I don’t want to sound ungrateful that he’s asked me for help, but I think I would be more helpful if I were at the front of the battle. I don’t tell him that, though. I don’t want to upset him and lose this opportunity.

‘Good man, Alpha Morris,’ he says. ‘Now, I want you to be sure to stay at the back of the battle line. Your people are valuable, and I don’t want anyone doing anything risky.’

‘I—sure,’ I say. I’m not really certain why he won’t let me try to help in the way I want to, but again, it will be nice to be on the battlefield in any capacity.

‘You need to promise me that you’ll stay to the back in a supporting role,’ he says.

‘Yes,’ I say. ‘Of course.’ I take a deep breath. At least I’ll see some measure of glory for helping in the fight.

‘Good man,’ he says. ‘I’ll see you there later, after we take care of another issue.’

‘Of course,’ I say. ‘Thank you, Alpha Tristan, for your confidence in me.’

‘You’re welcome,’ he says. ‘Just be careful. Stay in the back!’

We disengage the mind-link, and I look proudly out to my men and women. ‘Warriors, we have our first assignment!’ I announce, and they all look excited.

It took some time, but my warriors and I finally have all the provisions together, and we’ve set out in the direction of the western front. The smell of the food is just invigorating, and I wish I could sample some for myself, but I know the men and women who have been fighting on the line need their nourishment first.

I’m so proud that my army and I have the privilege to serve honorably. I’m not going to let Alpha Tristan, or any of the other Alphas, down.

We have to stay in human form to operate the vehicles that carry the provisions. I had been hoping to approach the front in wolf form, ready to fight, but I’m okay with this if I get a chance to help.

I think back to all the stupid things I’ve done, and I’m ashamed of some of my conduct. I guess I’d been thinking with the head below my belt when I made that agreement with Emily to kill the Breeder. Emily was the most beautiful woman who had ever said more than two words to me, so although I knew she was mean, I’d let myself get carried away with my lust for her. In the end, when I finally had her, it was incredible, but I can’t help but think that having that experience with a true mate—or at least someone with a soul who was decent to me—would have been worth it. Well, I can’t change the past. I just have to move forward.

And that’s what I’m doing as we arrive at the front. I can hear the fighting up ahead, but back here everyone is also bustling with activity. I immediately instruct my people to assist in unloading the food and helping the wounded.

As I stand there admiring how organized my people look in this crowd of chaos, I can’t help but feel a bit frustrated. I can tell that there’s a fierce fight up ahead, and I’m itching to be involved. I’m just standing here, and as Alpha, I should be doing something to help, something more than what I’m doing.

Then I see a blonde warrior—a beautiful woman—from the group of warriors who were resting from the battle. Our eyes meet for just a split second and my heart skips at least two beats. Those eyes are as blue as the deepest ocean, and the smile on her face when she sees me sends a ray of light that brightens up even this bloody battlefield.

I walk over to her, and we immediately embrace as if we’re pulled together by powerful magnets. She’s the warmest thing I’ve ever felt.

Within moments, one of the Betas gives the command for her to return, and my heart sinks as her hands slowly glide down my arms, stopping at my fingers with a squeeze.

“I have to go,” she says in an angelic voice. “I’ll see you later.”

“Yes, you will,” I tell her, a worried smile on my face. I’m concerned, but I can tell in my heart she’s a capable soldier, and I’m proud of her.

I watch her march away and shift into the most beautiful golden wolf I’ve ever seen. But within moments, my heart sinks as I see a black wolf coming over the hill to the side. I holler out to her, but she’s too far away, and my mind is too clouded with panic to try to engage a mind-link.

All other thoughts exit my mind, and I shift, my clothes tearing to shreds beneath me. I run at full speed toward the other wolf, and my heart drops into my feet as I watch him sink his sharp canines straight into her neck.

I howl in pain as I race toward the black wolf with tears in my eyes and my heart aching with the sharpest pain I’ve ever felt in my life. He sees me approach, and my sight goes blurry as the last thing I see is blood—her blood—dripping from the black wolf’s teeth.

The whole world goes black.
