I walk quickly toward the throne room. The king has summoned me, and I wonder if he wants to ask me why I missed dinner last night.

Maybe this is the best time to discuss the fact that Emily isn’t Luna material. I know she is his cousin, so I wonder how he’ll react.

As I near the throne room, I’m now sure I don’t have the nerve to be the one to bring this up.

We’d all spoken about this last night and had decided we needed a strategy to get Emily out of here. None of us want to marry her. But, how am I going to tell the king that no one in their right mind would be willing to live the rest of their days tied to that psycho bitch?

The king is seated on his throne with a stern look. I’m also surprised to find the other three Alphas present. Why did the king look like he had just sucked on a chili-marinated lime slice?

“Finally, you all are here. I was waiting for the four of you as I need to say this with all of you present,” the king says and a dark shadow crosses his face. He looks like he’s trying his hardest to maintain his composure. What could have upset him so badly?

I exchange a look with Reece, who seems to be wondering the same thing. Has the king finally realized his cousin is crazy?

“I don’t think I have witnessed such insolence as long as I have lived. How dare someone think they can disregard my ruling and my position as king?” the king questions.

“Yes, she has no regard for anyone but herself,” Tristan comments, nodding his head in agreement.

“I am glad you have finally realized that she is a cancer who has no place being here,” Reece also reacts.

I’m about to throw in my two cents, but the king has a confused look on his face as he gazes at Tristan and then at Reece. “What are you talking about?” King Gene asks.

The four of us all stand with identical confused expressions. What was HE talking about?

“Pardon me, my king. We thought you were talking about Em… who were you talking about?” Reece swallows as he decides not to finish the name we all are thinking about.

“I am talking about Alpha Kane. Who did you think I was talking about?” He throws the question right back at us.

Tristan clears his throat before answering. I pray he doesn’t mention Emily; we still need to plan how to go about getting rid of her. Surely the king can see that she isn’t Luna material, but we need to be tactful on how to approach the subject.

“Yes. We were also referring to Alpha Kane,” Reece says rather too quickly.

A crease forms on the king's forehead as he regards Reece. I am sure he is not buying this for one second; King Gene is a bit dim sometimes, but this was pretty obvious. Since I’ve been at the castle, I haven’t seen any evidence of the stupidity he is famous for, but I haven’t spent much time around him either.

“You said ‘she’ and the name you were about to say starts with an ‘Em’ sound.”

I curse silently. Looking at Tristan, I beg him with my eyes to get us out of this one. If anyone can think of a great way to spin this, it is him.

“Yeah, ‘the rascal,’ Alpha Kane. No man should behave like that, especially an Alpha who is in charge of a pack the size of his own. He is behaving like a bitch… hence why we referred to him as she,” Tristan declares. The last part sounds more like a question than a statement. “He’s an… eminent bitch.

I want to laugh out loud but find a way to maintain a straight face. Tristan isn’t one to believe a woman was anything to refer to as weak, but I guess desperate situations call for desperate measures.

“What has he done this time?” I cut in, trying to take the attention away from all this confusion.

“A messenger arrived this morning with a note from the old fool. He demands he be considered for the position of the next king and be allowed to join the four of you on this quest. He even followed the absurd request with a threat.”

This time I clench my fists.

“What threat did he issue?” Eli asks in a cold tone.

“He will attack the castle,” the king tells us as he slams his fist on the throne's armrest.

“Does he really think he can do that and succeed?” I ask. If he thinks his warriors can conquer the royal troops, he is a bigger fool than I thought.

“We would be able to defeat him, but by the time we do, he would have done some damage. We might have innocent casualties during such an attack.” The king’s reasoning is spot on. There was no sense losing lives over this situation. “Besides… I don’t like war.” I think I see fear in his eyes. Is he afraid?

Distracted, I go back to his earlier statement. When he said the word ‘innocent,’ my mind immediately went to Rose. What if she became an innocent casualty of the attack? There had to be a way to drench some water on the blazing ego of that old bastard.

“Why now? We’re in the third month running in this quest. Isn’t he too old to have such ambitions?” Tristan wonders.

“Is it really going after the throne, or does the old bastard just want to have a beautiful girl in his bed? Can he even get his fishing rod to work at his age? I wonder if he even knows how to drive a sophisticated, fiery model engine like Rose,” Reece says before raising his hand to cover his mouth.

It seems he just realized what he said in front of the king. I see him let out a breath when he realizes the king is deep in thought and seemingly hasn’t heard what he said.

“We need a way to nip this nonsense threat in the bud. Or do you plan to indulge his demands, my king?” I put forward.

I really hope he doesn’t agree to such absurdity. I am fine sharing Rose with the three other Alphas but will not subject Rose to that old selfish bastard. He definitely won’t care if he hurts her.

“My hand will not be forced by a fool who thinks he can tell me what to do by posing threats. Who does he think he is? It appears he has forgotten his place and who I am.”

The king’s face is turning red with rage as he speaks. I know we all feel the same way. Rose is ours, and we will not be sharing her with Alpha Kane. Not now, when we have all grown to love her this much.

My breath catches as I realize that I don’t just care deeply for Rose; I love her.

“So what do we do?” Eli asks.

“We strategize. We will have to remind him of his place. I will send troops to go have a ‘talk’ with him,” the king announces.

I chuckle. I hope he is not thinking a little warning will stop Kane. He isn’t the type to have a little tea party with and hope he will agree to anything.

“Do you think a little shaking and warning will stop someone like him?” Tristan takes the words right out of my mouth.

“Alpha Kane is threatening an attack; he’s not afraid to spill blood. We can’t just give him a stern warning and pray to the Moon Goddess that it does the trick,” Eli adds.

I nod my head, and I can see Reece doing the same. I am glad to see us all in agreement about this. Kane has declared war, and this is not something we should take lightly.

“The four of you can go have breakfast, after which we will meet back here in about two hours to come up with an actionable solution,” the king instructs.

We all nod in agreement and turn to walk away.

“You were right, by the way, Alpha Reece. That old bastard would never be able to drive a young sophisticated engine such as the breeder’s,” the king calls out to our retreating backs.
