“Barbara?” King Gene says from just outside of the closet door. “Where the fuck are you?”

‘I’m in your closet, King Gene!’ I’m using the mind-link, but he’s talking out loud like he thinks I am here, even though there’s no way that he could know I’m so close to him.

“What? No, you’re not. You helped that awful Breeder get out of my castle, and now you’re out there somewhere with Alpha Kane!”

‘No, that’s not right at all!’ I say, though part of it is actually right. ‘Open the closet door!’

With a loud sigh, he pulls open the closet door. He sees me sitting on the floor and screams and slams it closed again. “There’s someone in there!” he screams. “Guards!”

‘No! King Gene, that’s me!’ I tell him. I’m about ready to rip this tie out of my mouth and yell at him with my voice. ‘Don’t you recognize me? Don’t call for the guards. They think that I killed one of them, but I didn’t. It was your father.’

“My father?” King Gene opens the door again and peeks in at me. Once he realizes it is me, he opens the door the rest of the way. “Why would my father kill a guard in the deep dungeon? He’s never done anything like that before. I mean, uh, not that he’s down there. He’s not even alive. He died a long time ago.”

‘Untie me, and I’ll explain what I know,’ I tell him.

King Gene grumbles and reaches down, yanking the tie off of my hands. “What do you know?” he asks me.

I roll my eyes at him, noting that he hasn’t even bothered to untie my mouth. I pull the tie out from between my lips and get up off of the floor. “Listen, I know your parents are alive, King Gene,” I tell him.

“I don’t know what you’re–”

I have to interrupt him. “I know because your father told me about how you put him down there at the beginning of your reign, and then, I was there when your mother was brought down. The two of them were cooing and calling to one another like a couple of sick love doves. But then….” I decide to change tactics, “some awful guard came over to your mother and tried to… assault her. Sexually.”

Gene’s eyes get big. “Someone touched mommy in a bad place?”

Really, how did this man manage to be the Alpha King for so many years? I think Beta Adam does not get enough credit for ruling this place. “No, he didn’t touch your mommy, uh, the queen, in a bad place because your dad managed to get out of the cell with a hairpin. He killed the guard. But when he realized I was a witness, he decided that he needed to kill me, too.”

“Oh, no!” Gene says, covering his mouth with both hands. “Did he do it?”

I stare at him for a long moment, pondering how to answer that. “Did he… kill me?” I ask, seeking clarification,

“That’s right! Did he?”

I clear my throat, thinking perhaps he thinks I am a ghost. He does seem like the sort of person who would believe in ghosts. “No,” I tell him. “No, he did not kill me. But I did manage to get away from him, and that’s when I ran into some guards. They tied me up and shoved me in here. They said they wanted everyone to think that I killed the other guard and kidnapped the Breeder because they are conspiring against you.”

“No!” he shouts again. “They said that?”

I nod. “Yes. They were hoping I’d die in your closet, but you are too smart to let that happen, and you have found me in time!” I give him a grateful look. “You are my hero, King Gene! But you can’t let them blame me for all of these awful things. They will lie to you and try to outsmart you, but you are far too intelligent for that.”

“I am far too intelligent for that!” he agrees. “I will not let them blame this on you, Luna Barbara!”

I want to breathe a sigh of relief, but I know how he is–stupid. “You’ll probably have to do a lot of convincing.”

“I don’t have to convince anyone! I am the Alpha King! I make all of the decrees. And I am decreeing that you are not at fault here, and no one can harm you! Now, I will take you back to your room. That stupid ass Tristan should’ve never made you a prisoner to begin with. Also, do you know the names of the guards that were trying to overthrow me?”

I have to think for a moment. Only one name comes to mind. “Well… there was… Seymour,” I say.

“Seymour! That bastard! I should’ve known it! He was too loyal to be loyal. Who else?”

I’m not even sure what he’s just said, but I have to think on my feet. “Uhm… Bill?” He nods. “Jason?” He nods again. “Adam…?”

“Adam? The Beta?”

“No, no, not that Adam.” Shit. I’ve messed up now. “Adam… Adamina!”

“Adamina?” he repeats, a puzzled look on his face. “I don’t think I know him.”

I open my mouth and close it. “Him?”

“Yes, him. Really, Barbara, you should get your hearing checked.” He shakes his head. “All of my guards are hims. It’s not like I would trust a woman to do something as important as guard prisoners or fight in battles.”

I am not sure whether or not I should shout at him for being so sexist or correct him because I’ve seen plenty of women guards and warriors in his ranks when I was fighting against them.

He’s as nutty as his dad.

“Uh, yeah, I guess so then.” I’m not sure what else to say, so I decide to go with that.

“Well, then, I will make sure that they pay! Seymour, Bill, and this… Adamina! And you, Luna Barbara, are safe! I will keep you right here in my room with me until we are sure this witch hunt is over.”

I look around and see only his bed. “Uhm, okay,” I say.

‘Don’t worry. You can sleep on the futon.” He gestures at a small piece of furniture at the end of his bed that’s probably not big enough for a Pomeranian.

“Great,” I say.

Maybe I’ve just gotten myself into an even worse situation than I was in when I was in the dungeon….
