I watch as all four of the Alphas continue to pace up and down in the doctor’s room. I feel dizzy and restless as I watch them. Won’t they just sit down or just stand still? They all look worried, and they are acting a bit like mother hens. I love their attention and care, but they’re being a little dramatic.

Shelby wasted no time sending a message summoning them all to the doctor’s office. Each time I so much as breathe a bit loudly, they are all at my side asking if I am okay, and if I need a glass of water or juice. Moon Goddess, can’t a woman breathe without being fussed over?

“I am glad you are all here,” the doctor tells them. I sigh in relief as they momentarily stop pacing around. “Rose is pregnant, as I am sure you all have heard by now. Her blood pressure is high, which is common when someone is pregnant, but we have to find a way to stabilize it. I believe it is due to stress.”

“How do we fix that?” Mark asks as he stares the doctor down as if she is the one causing the blood pressure to rise.

“Is there a certain diet she should eat? Maybe less salt in her food? Can she maybe eat ice cream? It always calms me down. Can a pregnant woman eat ice cream? What foods can she eat? And drink–which drinks are good for her?” Tristan asks.

I blink hard as I try to follow everything he is saying, but it’s useless; he’s speaking quite fast.

“I think, first, you all have to calm down. If the four of you are so anxious around her, that’ll only give her even more anxiety. We need her to be at peace. I’ll prescribe some iron and folic acid tablets for her. I can’t give her anything for her blood pressure at the moment. In her state, she can’t be taking heavy medications of any kind, unless it’s very necessary. Her ankles are not swollen or anything, which means her blood pressure should normalize… provided you all stop being frantic. She’s pregnant, not dying from some disease.”

I sigh and shift in my chair, then they all surround me like flies on rotting flesh.

“Are you okay?” Eli asks.

“Do you need a pillow?” Mark adds.

“Or maybe she just needs to put her feet up. I could kneel and you use me as a stool,” Tristan offers.

I can’t help but bring my hand to my face. Is this how it is going to be from now on? I have to admit, seeing them fussing over me is so sweet–with a huge dash of annoyance.

“What did I just say, gentlemen? Say it with me, C-A-L-M,” the doctor warns, but still, the Alphas don’t leave my side. They just nod and continue to surround me.

“Maybe she shouldn’t be sitting in this hard chair. I could go fetch the couch from the waiting room,” Reece says.

I chuckle, imagining him carrying the two-seater couch to the office.

“I’m all right,” I sigh.

Mark holds my hand and gazes into my eyes. “Are you sure, baby? You know if you need anything all you have to do is say it. Your wish is our command.”

I nod nervously. I have four men ready to move mountains for me. How am I this lucky? I mean I am still Rose, right? The sewer plant Rose with the big nose–how have I captured four fine men like this?

“We have to make sure Rose is comfortable, without overwhelming her, until she has the baby. The king will advise what happens afterward.”

The doctor’s statement drags me out of my fantasy world fast. What will happen after I deliver this baby? Will the king change his stance? Will I stay on to at least see the child grow? The child would need to be breastfed, right? I exhale; so probably King Gene will keep me for a while longer after I deliver. Yes, he will have to.

“For now, sweetie, I need you to relax. Take good care of yourself. Take walks, but just short walks. Try to be in the sunlight a bit, especially the early morning sunlight. The sun is a good source of Vitamin D. We will do a few blood tests on you and then schedule a scan for three weeks from today. Take all the supplements I give you. If any of these men bother you—”

“They will answer to me, if they dare,” Shelby’s voice cuts in.

She is standing in the doorway, arms folded across her chest. She gives all the Alphas a warning look. I smile. I’m sure I will be fine. I have so much support.

“So who is the father?” Eli asks.

The doctor, whose name still won’t come to mind, shakes her head. “We won’t know that for a while.”

I look at all the Alphas’ faces; I can see that the response the doctor gave isn’t what they want. They will have to be patient…. We all have to be patient.

I put my hand to my abdomen. I want to feel the life I’m growing inside me. I’m sure the baby will be beautiful, regardless of which Alpha fathered it.

“I don’t think it matters who the father is. We will all adore and love the baby. Right, guys?” Eli announces.

The other three nod their agreement. I smile and wonder if they are just saying this so that I don’t stress out or worry.

“We won’t just adore and love the little one, but also the woman who will birth this child,” Reece adds.

I feel tears well up in my eyes. They are being so sweet, although I know we are all aware that this is the beginning of the end. This baby grows in me, yet I won’t get to raise the child once they are out of my body.

I look at the Alphas as they tease each other about what the child would look like.

“If it has red hair, we could call it Red,” Tristan says.

“Fiery!” Eli puts in.

“No, Fire Engine has more of a ring to it,” Mark laughs.

I can’t help but smile at how they seem to be taking this in good faith. I try to ‘absorb’ their mood, but I’m failing.

“Is there a specific diet I should stick to?” I ask in a bid to distract my racing, depressing thoughts.

“I’ll give the diet plan to the chef. Don’t worry or stress yourself about that,” the doctor assures me.

I nod and wish she could stop telling me to stop stressing. The more she says it, the more I find myself stressing.

“How about sex?” Tristan asks. The question causes a hush to fall in the room. The doctor peers at him from above the rims of her glasses.

“Well, pregnant women can still have sex. However, no wild chair and couch sex. I would also like to point out that Rose is already pregnant, thus there is no need to continue with your, um… schedules.”

Her last words feel like a punch to my gut. So this is the end? How had I forgotten why I was here? I’m a breeder… an incubator. How could I have been stupid to let my feelings get in the way?

Again, I feel my eyes fill with tears, but I blink them away. This is not the right time or place to cry. I have been crying a lot the past few days. I even cried when I watched a documentary about beautiful gardens. Gardens, what was so sad about gardens? I am just a mess.

A tear escapes my eye, and I wipe at it with urgency.

“It’s okay, sweetie. Pregnancy hormones will make you more emotional than before, so don’t be embarrassed about crying now and again. They also make you moody, so you could find yourself being irritated by the smallest things,” Dr. What’s-Her-Name tells me.

“That’s why you were acting all weird this morning. Tell me, Dr. Pendergan, do these hormones also make one delusional?” Shelby asks.

I feel my face warm up. At least this explains quite a bit. And now I know the doctor’s name. Pendergone.

“What do you mean delusional?” the doctor asks.

“Well, this morning she was sure a certain Karen bewitched her or was using some voodoo magic on her,” Shelby answers.

“Who is Karen? Is there a servant named Karen in the palace?” the doctor asks.

Although I’m blushing like an overripe tomato, the doctor’s question causes the six of us to burst out laughing.
