‘Eli, you fucking asshole! Where are you?!’

The voice comes screaming into my mind, and instantly, my heart races, and my wolf inside howls in pure joy. It takes a minute for me to process it, though. Did Rose just call me an asshole?

‘Oh, my Goddess,’ I say back. ‘Where are you, baby? Are you okay?’

‘No!’ she screams at me. ‘I am most definitely not okay! Why aren’t you here? What the fuck could you possibly have to do that’s more important than being here, you selfish jerk!’

I don’t know what to say to answer that, and I’m completely confused. This voice sounds like Rose, and my wolf feels her presence, but why is she talking to me like that? She’s never done that before, ever.

‘Oh, my Goddess,’ she says next. ‘I’m so sorry!’

‘It’s okay, baby,’ I say, happy that I’ve got my Rose back as I know her. ‘Where are you? What’s happening?’

‘I’m… I’m in a van, and it’s the suckiest, most piece of shit van in the world….’

I smile at that, considering the vehicle I’m currently driving.

‘And Dr. Travesty isn’t giving me an epi—ahhh!’ She finishes in one of the most blood-curdling screams I’ve ever heard, and I’ve been through many war battles.

‘Baby?!’ I say, and that knot is back in my stomach. What the hell are they doing to Rose? It sounds like some sort of torture. I swear, when I get my hands on Kane, I’m ripping him to shreds. And who the hell is Dr. Travesty? Is it some new name for Dr. Penderghan? I hope and pray to the Moon Goddess that Rose is in the hands of that friendly and competent doctor, but right now, I have no idea.

‘I’m okay,’ she says then. ‘Just another contraction.’

“Contraction?!” I scream it out loud without meaning too, and everyone in the van hears me.

“Oh, my Goddess,” says Kelly. “Are you talking to Rose? Is she in labor?”

All I can do to answer is nod.

“Bring me in!” Kelly hollers, and I bring her into the mind-link.

‘All I want to do is get out of this… ahhhh!’ says Rose with another horrible scream. The sound of it makes me want to kill whoever is doing it to her and strangely, at the same time, I feel like I need to run far, far away. But I won’t. I’m going to get to her. She’s having my baby! And it’s happening right now by the sound of it!

‘Breathe,’ Kelly says in a calm, soothing voice. Voice works a little differently in the mind-link than in person, but it does allow us to convey emotion as well as words, so I think the soothing sounds are helping.

But only for a minute.

‘You miserable fucking asshole!’ screams Rose. ‘Why did you fucking do this to me?!’ It’s followed quickly by, ‘Oh, no! I’m so sorry. Where are you?’

Kelly chuckles behind me. ‘Don’t apologize,’ she says. ‘I’ve been around him forever, and sometimes I’d agree with that name.’

I ignore her teasing because I have more important things to worry about right now. ‘I’m on the road headed to you, baby,’ I say. ‘We’re almost at Kane’s castle, and I’ll be there soon!’

‘No!’ she yells back at me.

‘What do you mean, no?’ I ask. ‘Don’t you want me there?’ I’m confused and a little hurt for a moment. Then I think about it, and remember how painful childbirth must be, so Rose probably isn’t herself right now. But still, does she not even want me there?’

‘I’m not there!’ she says. That’s right. She’d said she was in a van.

‘Where are you?’ I ask.

‘I’m… ahhhh!’

‘Breathe through it,’ says Kelly softly. ‘Breathe through it.’

‘Eli?!’ says Tristan.

‘Yes, I’m on my way,’ I say.

‘We just realized that she must be talking to you because she stopped cursing like a sailor at us!’ he says.

‘You’re all there?’

‘Yes,’ he says. ‘We’re taking her to Mark’s pack since that’s the closest. His healer, Dr. Travesty, is with her. We’ll be there in a couple of minutes.’

So that means I have to change course a bit. I’m glad she’s not going to have our babies in Kane’s castle, but now I’ll have a little farther to drive to get to her. Luckily, I know how to get to Mark’s pack from this highway.

‘Wait,’ I say. ‘Is that a name or a commitment to service?’

Tristan chuckles a little. ‘It’s the doctor’s real name,’ he says. ‘Rose’s in good hands, don’t worry. But she does need you here.’

‘I’m getting there as fast as I can,’ I say. The next exit is a smaller highway that heads off toward Mark’s pack, so I take it. I’m going faster than this piece of shit van can probably handle, but I’ll deal with that later.

‘Kane?’ I ask.

‘Dead,’ he says simply.

A combination of relief and anger wash over me. I wanted to kill the miserable asshole myself, but just knowing that Rose is no longer in danger from him is good enough for now.

‘Well done,’ I say. ‘Any other threats looming?’

‘None for now,’ he tells me. ‘We’ll worry about that later. And I’ll ask you all about what the hell took you so long later as well. But for now, how far out are you? These babies are just about ready to come out!’

‘Twenty minutes, if this piece of shit I’m driving holds out,’ I say. ‘I’m on Highway 12.’

‘I’ll send warriors to meet you in something more reliable,’ he says. ‘Just keep driving.’

‘You couldn’t stop me if you tried,’ I say.

‘Ahhh!’ screams Rose again. I’m not sure if she’s screaming out loud as well as in the mind-link, but whatever helps her is great. It’s also such an incredible relief to hear her voice again, even if she’s cursing at me and screaming in pain. It’s the pain of delivering my child, and that’s the most beautiful thing in the world.

Tears start forming in my eyes, and Kelly comes up behind me and puts her arm around me.

“We’ll be there soon,” she says. “She’ll be fine, and you’ll be a father very soon.”

“That makes me incredibly happy and incredibly nervous at the same time,” I say. A million questions flow through my mind, all of them asking myself what kind of father I’ll be. Will my child like me? Will they try to rebel because I wasn’t a good enough father? Will he be a good citizen? Can I handle this responsibility for the rest of my life?

Kelly chuckles next to me. “I can see the wheels spinning in your head,” she says. “You’re going to be an incredible father, and Rose is going to be an unbelievably wonderful mother. All four of these babies have a great future ahead of them. And I can’t wait to see them!”

“I’m sure you’re right, but right now I can’t even fathom the concept of fatherhood,” I say.

“It’ll be the most natural thing in the world to you once you lay your eyes on the baby,” she says. “By the way, speaking of eyes, watch the road and focus. We have to get there in one piece first, new dad.”

She giggles a little and returns to her seat next to Heather, who squeals in excitement when Kelly explains the situation to her.

The birth of my child is the most important thing that’s ever happened in my life, and I need to be there for it. I hope and pray to the Moon Goddess that I’ll get there in time.

‘I’m almost there, baby,’ I tell Rose as I press on the gas pedal.
