The woman who took my baby is sitting in a small office at the train station, crying hysterically as I tower over her, trying to understand why she would do such a thing.

I’ve sent the other Alphas away, telling them I can handle this while they look for their children, but Mark wasn’t sure. He could tell I was at the end of my rope. I still am, but I am being cautious. As much as I want to rip this woman’s head off, that won’t help me understand how she could do something like this or help the other Alphas find their children.

One of the managers of the train station, an older man named Harvey, is standing in the corner with his arms folded in front of him. I think he’s just here in case I do kill her, so that he can make sure the train station isn’t held liable by her family or something.

I decide to take a step back and rethink this situation. Clearly, hovering over her isn’t helping the situation any.

“Tell me your name,” I say. My voice has an edge to it, but it’s not as mean as it could be. I pluck a tissue out of a box from a shelf and hand it to her.

“Be-Be-Bethany,” she stutters out.

“Bethany, I am trying to understand how you came to have possession of my daughter. I can’t promise you that you’re not in trouble, but I can tell you that if you start talking, the chances of you not being thrown in a dungeon to rot for the rest of your life will improve. So… tell me. Where did you get the baby?”

She shakes her head as the tears begin to fall. “I… I… was at the train station, getting ready to get on a train, when this man came from nowhere. He looked like he was really struggling. He had holes in his clothes and he was dirty. He said… his wife had just had a baby, but they couldn’t afford to take care of her, and he didn’t know what to do. They needed money to pay their bills. They needed money for food. He was crying.”

She pauses to wipe away her tears, and I patiently wait for her to continue. “Go on.”

She clears her throat. “I said I was so sorry, that I thought that there was a children’s home in a town up the track a little ways, maybe he could take the baby there. He shook his head and said he couldn’t even afford the train ticket, and he needed to find a way to get some money right away and provide a home for his daughter. I told him that my mistress has been trying to have a baby for a long time and hasn’t been able to, so maybe she’d be interested in a private adoption.”

I have to bite my tongue to keep from yelling at her that she should never have offered to buy a baby from someone–that not only is it against the law, it’s immoral.

“So… he said if I could give him fifteen thousand gold coins, he would be able to pay all of his bills, and I could have the baby for my mistress. I explained to him that that kind of money is over a year’s worth of wages for me, and I didn’t have that. But he saw the ring I had on. It’s the reason I came to Amityville to begin with, to get my mistress’s ring cleaned. He said he’d take the ring for the baby. I know that the ring is important to my mistress, but I thought that the baby would be more important. Still, I told him that she wouldn’t want the baby without the paperwork to prove it was hers. He said he would get it to me, that the girl was only a few days old, and they hadn’t filed the paperwork yet, so he would just list my mistress and her husband as the parents.”

“So you agreed to this?” I ask her, and she nods her head as more tears fall down. “You don’t think you should’ve asked your mistress first?”

“The mind-link was out of range, and I don’t have a phone,” she explains. “I think she would’ve been happy. But now, she doesn’t have a baby or her ring! And I won't have a job, and I’ll probably have to go to prison!”

“Yeah, it seems like you really fucked up,” I tell her, not pulling any punches. “Did you get the guy’s name?”

“Yes! It was Rob Peoples!” she says, confident that she is helping me now.

“Rob Peoples?” I repeat to her. “Did you hear what you just said?”

Her forehead scrunches up and then her eyes widen, and her mouth drops open. “Oh, Goddess! I’m such an idiot!”

“You’re definitely not impressing me with your intelligence,” I agree with her. “All right. We’re going to continue to detain you so if we catch him, you can identify him. What did the ring look like?”

“It has a large ruby in the center with a diamond on either side. The band is gold,” she tells me.

I nod, and using the mind-link, I relay the information to Mark, asking him, ‘Is there a pawn shop in Amityville?’

‘Yeah, there are a ton of them,’ Mark tells me. ‘I’ll send local authorities to speak to all of the pawn shop owners. Maybe good ol’ Rob will try to sell it, and we’ll be able to catch him.’

That sounds like a great plan to me. I focus on Bethany again. “Did Rob have any other babies with him when he sold you my daughter?”

“No,” she says quickly. “I didn’t see that he had any other babies with him.”

I nod. I wonder if that means that Reeva was the last to be sold or if he had her and someone else was holding the other babies.

Anyway, we need to find this bastard and figure out where the other babies are. While I’m relieved that my daughter is safe, I love Matthew, Ethan, and Trisha like they are my own, and I will do whatever I can to help find them.

Since the other Alphas are out chasing the trains that have stopped, I turn to the man in the corner, Harvey, and ask, “What’s the closest pawn shop to the train station?”

“Margie’s Hock Shop,” he says. “Down on Thief’s Boulevard. Two rights and a left.”

“Thank you,” I tell him. “Keep an eye on Bethany here. Don’t let her leave.”

“Yes, Alpha,” he replies, as if I were Alpha Mark.

I decide to go by and check on Rose and Reeva before I go chase this bastard down. No one hurts my Rose like this and lives to talk about it.
