Husband plans to kill me Chapter 313
Brett shook his head and said earnestly, "No, I was actually pretty happy when I was in school..."
"But now I say I'm happy every day because I know Mom is happy."
Hearing Brett say this, my eyes suddenly welled up with tears.
It had been so long since I spent time with the kids that I sometimes forgot how wonderful it was to have them around.
My daily interaction with them was just me checking on them in their room after work. Kelly and Zola were the ones who spent the most time with them.
Even though I lived at home, I felt there was an invisible distance between me and the kids.
The last time I felt this way was when Brandon drugged me and kept me locked up at home.
Shirley was so close to my kids in front of me that even Aria almost called her mom...
But my Brett always stood by my side.
Even though he was sent to boarding school by Brandon because he only recognized me as his mom, his dependence and love for me never changed.
"Why would Brett say that?" I couldn't help but ask, my voice choking up.
"Mom, don't cry... You used to be so unhappy, and every time I came home, you looked so weak lying in bed. I swore that if you ever left that house, I would do everything I could to protect you!"
Brett tried to wipe my tears with his little hand, and I quickly bent down.
Brett's soft, tender hand touched my face, and my tears flowed even more. "So you think I'm really happy now, right?"
"Mom, you come home every day and spend time with Grandma, and you always have a smile on your face. Of course, you're happy..."
Brett clumsily wiped my tears while answering my question. "Mom, stop crying. Didn't you say you were taking me to buy toys?"
"Yes, I'm taking you to buy toys..."
I took a deep breath. "Hearing Brett say that just made me a bit emotional, that's all. I didn't mean to cry."
"It's okay, Mom. Brett said that because he meant it!"
Hearing my son use such grown-up words, I thought he really was growing up.
But in front of me, he was still just a little kid.
We went to the toy store together.
The toy store was at the corner of the mall, and you could push open the door directly from the street. The window display was filled with all kinds of toys.
I remembered the last time I brought Brett here was when he was one or two years old.
Thinking back, Brandon was already plotting to take my company, but I was completely unaware, and my health wasn't that bad yet.
Bringing Brett back to this toy store now felt like a lifetime ago.
Brett was like a happy little tiger, looking here and there.
He hadn't picked out his own toys in a long time. Most of the time, Kelly and her friends would bring him something suitable when they went out.
Seeing Brett show his true nature, I couldn't help but smile with relief.
Brett finally chose two model kits, one of a train and one of an aircraft carrier.
"Why did you pick these two?"
I asked the store clerk to wrap them up and asked Brett why he chose them.
"Because I'm really into these! When I grow up, I wanna fly planes and drive trains... And I wanna protect you, Mom!"
I smiled and patted Brett's head.
The store clerk overheard and smiled at me. "What a thoughtful kid. Even when buying toys, he's thinking about protecting his mom."
Leaving the toy store with Brett, I sent a message to Royce, along with a photo.
The photo was of Brett holding the two toys, grinning from ear to ear.
Royce replied quickly.
[So cute. I'll cover the cost of the toys.]
He sent me a transfer right away.
Seeing the five-figure amount, I was stunned. The toys only cost a few hundred dollars, nowhere near that much.
Just as I was about to transfer the money back, Royce sent another message.
[I'm gonna be this kid's stepdad sooner or later, so just keep it.]
Reading that, my heart warmed.
I suddenly felt a bit embarrassed...
With so much extra money, I decided to take Brett out for a meal and buy some toys and clothes for the other kids.
Thinking this, I walked outside the mall with Brett, planning to browse around before heading back.
Just then, I turned my head and saw a shadow reflected in the window.
The figure was following us closely, moving stealthily.
But that large build made me recognize him immediately—it was Lowell!
The last time I saw him was when he was with Kathy.
Back then, Kathy and I hid well, and someone from the class helped us, so Lowell didn't do anything.
But now he was following me and Brett...
What was Lowell planning?
Countless questions swirled in my mind.
The worst part was, the path Brett and I were on was a tree-lined path around the mall, usually deserted.
This meant if Lowell caught up to us, there might be no one around to help!
Thinking this, I quickly took out my phone to call Royce.
But before I could speak, Lowell rushed up.
"Caroline!"
He raised his hand and hit my arm, causing me to drop my phone. Then I heard Lowell's sinister laugh.
"Caroline, it's been so long. How come you didn't say hi?"
"I saw you spot me through the window just now."
Hearing his voice, I panicked and pulled Brett behind me. "Who said we're old classmates? You haven't finished bullying me yet!"
"That's a bit hurtful. When did I ever bully you?"
Lowell had always been a big guy, and now he was even bigger. Just one hit from him made my arm throb with pain.
Picking up my phone in front of him was impossible.
I was glad I had locked the screen after answering, and the speaker wasn't on, so the phone's sound was very faint.
Lowell probably hadn't realized I was still on the call with Royce...
I could only hope Royce would get here quickly and that Brett and I would be safe for now!
"Say something, Caroline? You used to be so high and mighty! Even when we bullied you, you never gave in!"
