Husband plans to kill me Chapter 329
Since we decided to go out for dinner on a whim, we picked a nearby restaurant.
Luckily, there were plenty of options around our neighborhood.
Before we went in, I told Leo I'd cover the bill for this meal, so he didn't need to worry about it.
He looked at me, a bit embarrassed, and said with a smile, "We came to visit you, so how can we let you pay? I should be the one treating you."
I gave him a playful shove. "No way, I'm paying! You came all this way to see us, so it's only right that I treat you."
Without waiting for his reaction, I pulled Brett inside and asked for a small private room for four.
Leo and Briar followed behind me. I could feel their eyes on me, like they had something to say, but I ignored it.
The most important thing right now was to sit down and get my emotions in check.
And when I talked to Leo later, I'd make sure Brett and Briar focused on their food. Whatever the kids talked about was their business.
Before meeting them, I had already reminded Brett of a few things. He was a smart kid and knew what to say and what not to say.
I felt confident about that.
Once we sat down, I handed the menu to Briar and Leo, letting them choose the dishes.
Leo gave a wry smile. "Actually, there's something I've been wanting to say since earlier, but I wasn't sure if I should."
"What's up?" I asked, pretending not to know anything, looking up at him.
Leo sighed. "I feel like you're treating us more and more like strangers now… You kept emphasizing that we're guests, and you were so insistent about paying for the meal. Is our relationship really not as good as it used to be?"
He sighed deeply again. "I thought even if you and Brandon got divorced, we'd still be like family. But I guess people change over time."
Hearing that, my expression turned cold. "If we're talking about treating each other like strangers, you started it first. When Karen died, you came to ask how much money she left me. I think doing something like that shows you don't see me as family anymore, right? It's only because the kids are still connected and get along well that we have so much interaction. Otherwise, you wouldn't have planned to meet and talk with me again, would you?"
My words turned the tables, making Leo's face darken. "So you're still holding onto that. Honestly, I didn't mean anything by it at the time. My wife asked me to find out…"
I waved my hand. "It's been so long, I don't want to bring it up again."
When Karen passed away and left me her inheritance, I did have a hand in that.
I didn't give them any of that money afterward.
I always felt that the Jordan family owed me. Even if Karen left me that money, it couldn't make up for what they owed me before.
So I took that money without any guilt, feeling it was only right!
No matter who asked for it, I wouldn't give it to them.
But in front of Leo, I had to make things clear. "I get it about the money. You were cautious back then, and everyone was struggling, so it's natural to be anxious about these things. But I have a clear conscience when it comes to you. Let's not talk about this in front of the kids."
Leo rubbed his hands together, ordered a few dishes, and then looked at me.
The two kids didn't seem to understand our conversation.
Unlike Brett, who didn't care what we were saying, Briar's eyes darted between us, clearly thinking about something.
Worried that Briar might hear too much, I deliberately said, "Everyone has their own lives now, and Brett is growing up. He'll only get busier. After all, they're of the opposite sex… boys and girls shouldn't be too close! No matter how well they get along, they can't be together all the time, right?"
Leo nodded. "You're right. I hadn't thought about it that way. I always thought they were still kids, so it was normal for them to play together."
I sighed, slowly poured him a glass of water, and ordered two bottles of soda from the waiter.
For the kids, of course, it was orange juice. I wasn't planning on drinking alcohol, just some Coke.
I said, "But when you brought Briar over before, I still let them play together and even let them stay at our place! From that, I think I haven't treated you like strangers. Your words hurt a bit."
Leo looked embarrassed and quickly said, "I must have misunderstood. Maybe it's just the way you talk. I've been busy and sensitive lately, so I overthought things."
"Maybe that's it. But I still want to say, we were family before. Even though our relationship has faded, the kids still get along. Don't overthink it. We're all busy with our own challenges." That was my way of showing my stance.
I felt Leo's visit wasn't just for a casual chat or to let the kids meet.
He must be trying to find out something!
After all, he had Briar install a bug in my house before.
And recently, I had destroyed those bugs without making a fuss. Leo must be anxious.
Thinking of this, I calmly called the kids to eat. "I've been here once before, and I remember they serve food quickly. Let's enjoy our meal. I'll find you a place to stay nearby… By the way, how long are you planning to stay this time?"
I wasn't giving them a chance to stay at my place.
Leo scratched his head, looking like he wanted to say something but hesitated.
Considering what I had just said, he finally replied, "It's not necessary. I'll find a place for Briar and me to stay for the night… I'm only here for a day or two. If things go well, I might leave tomorrow night."
I nodded. "I'll still find you a hotel. You can't stay just anywhere with a kid."
Leo's expression changed again. "It's fine. Briar is used to it."
Used to it? I felt a pang of sadness but didn't say anything.
