Royce stepped forward, his voice cold and firm. "Brandon, this isn't gonna solve anything. Put down the knife, and let's talk this out. Brett's still your son, after all."

Brandon let out a bitter laugh, his tone dripping with disdain. "You think I trust you? Royce, you stole Caroline, and now you have the nerve to provoke me!"

As he spoke, his grip on the knife tightened.

A thin line of blood appeared on Brett's neck, and my heart nearly stopped.

In a split second, Royce lunged forward, grabbing Brandon's wrist.

The two men struggled, and the knife clattered to the ground.

I rushed over, pulling Brett to safety and holding him tightly. "It's okay, I'm here."

Brett clung to me, trembling and crying. "Mom, I'm so scared... What's wrong with Dad?"

I gently patted his back, my voice choked with emotion. "It's over now... I'm here, and I won't let anyone hurt you again... Don't call him Dad anymore."

Brandon, who would harm his own son, didn't deserve to be called a father.

Meanwhile, Royce had subdued Brandon, pinning his arms behind his back. "Brandon, you've gone too far this time."

Brandon hunched over, laughing maniacally. "Caroline, you think you've won? This was all part of my plan!"

I looked at him, filled with disgust and anger.

Before I could figure it out, the police arrived and took Brandon away.

Royce and I took Brett to the hospital to check his injuries.

Surprised, I decided to visit him in prison to get some answers.

I kept my voice steady. "Brandon, what are you trying to do? Why did you confess to everything? You weren't saying that before."

Brandon kept smiling. "I'm not trying to do anything. But you should know, even if I'm in prison, you won't have peace."

My heart tightened. "Brandon, are you crazy? What do you gain from this?"

Brandon's expression darkened. "I don't care about gains. I told you, Caroline, you ruined everything for me, and now you'll know what that feels like."

He had said that before.

But I hadn't thought much of it then.

Now, hearing it again, I felt like I was missing something.

After leaving the visiting room, I went straight to the police handling the case.

I told them all about Brandon's past misdeeds and asked, "Is this enough to ensure a harsher sentence?"

Even if he was Brett's father, this was blatant kidnapping! He even hurt Brett with a knife. I was determined not to let him get away this time. He had to pay for his actions.

"We'll review everything carefully," the police assured me.

Meeting Royce afterward, I felt somewhat relieved. Although Leo's appearance had surprised me, Royce's constant support made me feel secure.

We decided to have lunch at a nearby restaurant and discuss our next steps. We had just sat down when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Joanna. Her message was brief but made my heart race.

[Caroline, have you been in touch with Leo recently?]

Why would Joanna bring up Leo? They shouldn't know each other or have any connection. I quickly called Joanna to ask how she knew Leo.

Joanna hesitated for a moment. "I recently heard some things and found out he's Renee's husband."

"Yeah... he's kind of part of the Jordan family. I didn't think it was important, so I never mentioned it."

I never thought this family would have any ties to my friends. Kathy knew the most, but she didn't know much about Leo either.Joanna said, "I saw him at a picnic with you once. He seemed a bit dull, but now..."

I frowned. "Just say it. I'm not close with him."

If it weren't for investigating the Jordan family, I wouldn't have any dealings with Leo.

Joanna sighed in relief. "Good to know... I've been busy and haven't checked in on you. As long as you're not close, that's fine."

She added, "He's been looking for investors recently, trying to start a business, but it's not going well. I heard this from a woman at the spa. Leo mentioned you, saying you were old friends."

I frowned. "Why would he say that? Does he think I'm his connection?"

Leo acted humble around me, but behind my back, he was using my name for his business.

Joanna sighed. "I don't want to think the worst of people, but it seems possible. Since your company has been doing well since the divorce, Leo might be trying to use that to his advantage. I called to see where you stood. If you supported him, I wouldn't say anything."

I blurted out, "Of course I don't support him!"

"Good. If anyone asks, just distance yourself from him... Starting a business and finding investors isn't easy, and I don't think he has the brains for it."

If he did, he wouldn't be so entangled with Renee and constantly bothering me.

Joanna said a few more things before hanging up. I stared at my phone, frowning. Leo was definitely trying to get my help, and he was already asking around about me. I looked up at Royce.
