Husband plans to kill me Chapter 386
Royce answered quickly, his voice tinged with urgency, "Caroline, what's up?"
I rarely called him at this hour, so it was no wonder he sounded worried.
I hurriedly told him what had happened. Royce paused for a moment before speaking, his tone resolute, "Don't worry, I'll protect you and Brett. Even if Alfonso is behind this, he won't dare make a move."
Just as we were talking, the doorbell rang.
I rushed to open the door.
To my surprise, it was Briar. I asked, "What are you doing back here?"
Briar spoke to me, panic evident in her voice, "Ms. Sharp, Brett... Brett is missing!"
My phone slipped from my hand, my mind going blank, "What? Brett is missing? How did this happen?"
He had gone out while I wasn't paying attention?
Briar's voice was choked with tears, "I took Brett to the park to play hide and seek, but when I came back, he was gone... I searched everywhere and couldn't find him..."
I said, "I'll go look right now."
I knew my face must be pale, and my hands were trembling.
Royce was still on the phone and realized the gravity of the situation.
He said to me, "Caroline, don't panic, we're coming back right away."
I stumbled out the door with Briar, my heart pounding, my mind filled with terrifying images.
Brett was my everything. If anything happened to him, I wouldn't know what to do.
At the park, I searched and called out for him.
Briar's eyes were filled with tears, "Ms. Sharp, I really looked everywhere, Brett isn't..."
I tried to suppress my panic, "Briar, don't worry, we'll keep looking. Brett might just be hiding somewhere."
How could I not be worried?
He was my child! I just didn't want my anxiety to cloud my judgment.
Royce and Kathy arrived quickly.
Kathy grabbed my hand as soon as she saw me.
She explained that she was on her way to see me when she ran into Royce's car at the neighborhood entrance. After hearing what happened, she rushed over.
They started searching the park, leaving no corner unchecked.
But even after combing through the entire park, there was still no sign of Brett.
My anxiety grew, my palms sweaty.
Royce seemed to sense my distress and held my hand firmly, "We're calling the police right now."
It dawned on me that I hadn't called the police yet!
I nodded, my hands shaking as I dialed the number.
Kathy stayed by my side, trying to comfort me.
The police arrived quickly and began asking about the situation.
Despite her nervousness, Briar explained everything in detail.
I patted her back, signaling that she did well.
The police took notes and started reviewing the neighborhood's security footage.
We returned home and sat in the living room, anxiously waiting for the police to report back.
Every passing minute felt like an eternity, a heavy weight pressing on my chest.
Kathy held my hand tightly, telling me not to worry, but everyone's faces were grim.
Thankfully, I had been homealmost every day, giving Kelly some time to herself. She was out at a party today.
I didn't need to tell my mom about this yet, which was a small relief.
Kelly would be devastated if she found out.
Finally, the police returned with their findings, their expressions serious. "Ms. Sharp, we reviewed the footage and saw Brett being taken by a stranger. The man was wearing a hat and mask, so we couldn't see his face, but he appeared to be an adult male."
My heart sank.
Brandon's image flashed in my mind.
Could it be him? But he was supposed to be in prison!
The last time I visited him, he was hostile towards me!
Royce seemed to have the same thought. He whispered to me, "Don't worry, let's confirm Brandon's status first."
Today, Royce's most repeated phrase was telling me not to worry.
I nodded and immediately called the prison.
After some inquiries, we learned that Brandon was indeed still incarcerated and hadn't been released.
This brought me some relief but also more confusion—if it wasn't Brandon, then who took Brett?
The police continued their investigation while we waited anxiously at home.
Throughout the ordeal, Kathy stayed by my side, softly reassuring me, "Don't worry... Brett will be okay."
Briar sat nearby, looking like she had done something wrong, hugging her knees and staring blankly.
Seeing her so small, I couldn't bring myself to blame her. She had already explained everything to the police.
If it weren't for that, I would have demanded answers!
Just then, my phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number, but it looked somewhat familiar.
I immediately thought of the person who had called me before.
I answered, and a deep voice came through.
"Caroline, if you want your son safe, do as I say."
It was the same man!
But his voice sounded strange, with some background noise.
My heart tightened, my voice trembling, "Who are you? What do you want?"
The man chuckled coldly, "Who I am doesn't matter. What matters is that your son is with me. If you want him back safely, prepare five million dollars in cash and bring it to the abandoned factory in Starry Sky District by ten tonight. Remember, don't call the police, or you'll never see your son again!"
With that, the call ended.
I held the phone, my whole body shaking, instinctively looking at the people around me.
Royce and Kathy had heard the call and their faces turned serious.
"I'm telling the police about this call right now."
The police were already helping us search for Brett, and this information was crucial.
Royce held my hand firmly, his tone resolute.
I shook my head, my voice breaking, "No, he said not to call the police, or Brett will be in danger... Should we tell the police to hold off for now..."
Kathy squeezed my hand, shaking her head, "Caroline, we can't listen to him. You can't trust a kidnapper. We have to call the police."
I took a deep breath, torn and terrified.
I knew they were right, but I couldn't risk Brett's life...
Royce saw my hesitation and spoke softly, "Trust me, we'll get Brett back. The police have experience, they'll help us."
