Husband plans to kill me Chapter 387
I nodded, feeling a bit more at ease.
We called the police right away and told them about the kidnapper's demands.
The police assured us they'd come up with a plan immediately, deciding to set up an ambush at the meeting spot to ensure Brett's safety.
At 10 PM, we showed up at the abandoned factory in the Starry Sky District with five million dollars in cash, just like the kidnapper had instructed.
We knew this place a little; last time Brandon took Brett out, it seemed to be around here.
The closer we got, the more I felt like this person might know Brandon...
Why else would they pick such a spot?
The police had already set up an ambush around the area, just waiting for the kidnapper to show up.
We stood at the factory entrance, my face full of anxiety and conflict, while Royce gripped my hand tightly.
If I weren't afraid of making the kidnapper suspicious, I would have brought Kathy along too.
Suddenly, we heard footsteps coming from inside the factory.
A man wearing a hat and mask emerged, holding Brett by the hand.
He looked around nervously, like he was checking for any police presence.
Seeing us, the man narrowed his eyes slightly and walked over with Brett.
Brett saw me and immediately burst into tears. "Mommy!"
He reached out his little hand, wanting me to hold him.
My heart tightened, and I almost rushed forward, but Royce held me back.
"Don't act impulsively, wait for the police's signal," he whispered.
The man kept his distance, looking at us coldly. "Did you bring the money?" he asked in a low voice.
I nodded and handed over the suitcase. "The money's here. Now let my son go."
This was what we had agreed upon with the police beforehand.
We would comply with the kidnapper's demands, and the rest would be up to the police.
The man took the suitcase, opened it to check, and after confirming it was correct, he released Brett.
Brett immediately ran towards us, and I scooped him up, tears streaming down my face.
Royce quickly came over and patted Brett's head.
At that moment, the police suddenly rushed out and pinned the man to the ground. They moved so quickly that neither Royce nor I saw it clearly.
The ambush had been so well-executed that the kidnapper hadn't noticed a thing.
When the man realized something was wrong, he tried to run, but he couldn't outrun the police. After a brief struggle, he was subdued.
We took Brett home, finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Brett cried the whole way, clinging to my arm and refusing to let go.
I knew this experience had left a deep scar on him.
Because it wasn't the first time!
Thinking back on the past few days, I was filled with guilt and could only hold Brett tightly.
The police later interrogated the man and discovered that he had been hired by Brandon.
It turned out this had been part of Brandon's plan all along, a backup measure.
But they couldn't get any more information from him, and he admitted to everything!
Hearing this news, I was filled with anger and fear.
Brandon's madness sent chills down my spine!
He had shown up at my doorstep before, talking about wanting custody of the child. Now it seemed it was just to gain leverage!
Royce patted my back. "We didn't expect him to have planned all this."
I became even more determined. I would never let him harm me or my family again.
Thinking back, the phone call from the man was clearly a distraction.
He had claimed that Alfonso was behind this. Now it seemed it was just Brandon's trick.
Royce had a different perspective. "This doesn't necessarily mean Alfonso isn't involved. They could be working together, trying to avoid suspicion and connection."
After calming down, I realized Royce made sense.
After all, Brandon was now in custody and wouldn't be getting out anytime soon.
Blaming everything on him might allow others to hide.
Perhaps that was why he confessed so readily.
Brett had cried himself to sleep in my arms. On the way home, I held him the whole time, and now, speaking softly with Royce, I still felt uneasy.
Kathy was driving, occasionally glancing back to check on us, sometimes sighing softly.
When we got home, I carried Brett inside.
Brett woke up, touched my face with his small hand, and shivered slightly. "Mommy, are we home now?"
I nodded and whispered, "Brett, I promise to protect you from now on. This will never happen again."
Brett leaned against me, a rare smile appearing on his face. "Mommy, I don't blame you at all. Please don't blame yourself."
My mom wasn't home yet and had no idea what had happened today.
Briar came downstairs and, seeing Brett, widened her eyes. "Brett, are you okay?"
"I'm fine... Briar, let's not go to the park for a while... It feels too dangerous everywhere!"
In front of Briar, Brett seemed much more mature, speaking with a big brother's tone.
Briar nodded. "I'm sorry, I took you out to play today, but I couldn't protect you..."
"Don't say that. We went out together. Let's stay home for now and keep ourselves safe."
Brett said he didn't mind at all.
Briar suddenly started crying. "I was so scared something would happen to you... What if..."
Brett quickly patted her hand. "It's okay. I'm back now, right? Let's not talk about it anymore!"
This was what I had told him in the car.
I didn't want my mom to know or worry.
Seeing the two kids hugging each other, my mind was still a bit chaotic.
The man who appeared today wasn't someone I knew, and his tone was different from the phone call.
Were they really the same person?
Or was there a bigger conspiracy waiting for me?
Briar and Brett chatted in the living room, both looking exhausted.
I told them to go to bed and then took Brett to his room.
Kathy and Royce were still waiting outside. I didn't say much to Brett.
"Remember what I told you. We won't go out much for now, but I'll stay with you at home."
I patted Brett's head, speaking seriously.
I knew repeating it wouldn't change much, but I hoped Brett would learn to protect himself from now on.
