Husband plans to kill me Chapter 400
Briar's voice shook, "Dad, I can't stand seeing you leave like that again. If you know something, just tell them."
In Briar's little world, she thought Leo got arrested because he wouldn't tell us the truth.
Leo was quiet for a moment before he sighed, "Alright, I'll tell you. But you have to promise me, you gotta protect yourselves. Even if I tell you, I won't go into too much detail."
Royce and I nodded.
Leo gave a bitter smile and began, "You two are sharp and smart. The truth is, my business failure was a setup. Alfonso made me do it to cover up some evidence. I was just his scapegoat."
"So that's why you warned us to stay away from Alfonso?" I remembered Leo's previous warnings.
Leo nodded. "He orchestrated my business failure to divert the police's attention. I was just a part of his plan."
Royce frowned, tapping his fingers lightly on the table, "Leo, how could you agree to this? Do you know how dangerous it is?"
If this went wrong, it wouldn't just affect his family!
We had been helping him all this time, and now we were being dragged into this mess!
Leo looked down, visibly uneasy, "I know, but I had no choice... Alfonso threatened me. If I didn't agree, he would go after Briar."
My heart tightened, and I quickly asked, "What do we do now? Will Alfonso still come after you? Has he contacted you recently?"
Leo shook his head and leaned back, exhaustion written all over his face, "I don't know. But I think he might have given up. After all, I've completed his task."
Brett suddenly looked up, a hint of confusion in his eyes, "Mom, who is Alfonso? Why does he want to hurt Mr. Schmidt?"
We had told him on the way here not to ask about adult matters during the meal.
But our serious tone must have piqued his curiosity.
I paused, feeling a bit conflicted.
Brett was still young, and I didn't want him to know too much.
I glanced at Royce, then gently patted Brett's head, speaking softly, "Brett, Alfonso is a bad man. But don't worry, we'll protect Mr. Schmidt and Briar."
Brett nodded, half understanding but determined, "Mom, I'll protect them too! Especially Briar!"
Briar looked at Brett and suddenly said, "Brett, let's let them talk. We can go play for a bit!"
Given what had happened before, I was cautious about this suggestion, but seeing no malice in Briar and the busy restaurant, I nodded and let them go.
Briar and Brett whispered in a corner of the restaurant, their expressions somewhat mysterious.
I watched them from a distance, feeling a bit curious.
After a while, when they returned, I smiled and asked Brett, "Brett, what were you and Briar talking about?"
Brett blinked, a mischievous smile on his face, "Mom, it's a secret. I can't tell you!"
I laughed at his response, gently pinching his cheek, "You have secrets now?"
Brett raised his chin, looking pretty proud, "Yeah, it's a secret between me and Briar!"
I smiled, feeling curious but decided not to press further. Kids having their little secrets was normal.
But throughout the meal, Leo's behavior surprised Royce and me. His expression stayed calm, almost indifferent, except when we asked about Alfonso.
Later, when we tentatively asked about his business failure again, he seemed composed, responding lightly, "Businesses fail sometimes. I wasn't prepared this time. I'll try again if I get another chance."
His attitude puzzled us. If Leo was really used by Alfonso or involved in some conspiracy, how could he be so calm? Were we wrong in our assumptions? But what he told us didn't seem fake.
On the way home, Brett fell asleep in the back seat. Royce frowned and said to me, "Caroline, do you think Leo genuinely doesn't know, or is he hiding something?"
I shook my head, feeling uncertain, "I don't know. Leo's behavior was too normal, which makes it feel off... No, it was both normal and abnormal. It gives me a weird feeling."
Royce thought for a moment and said slowly, "Maybe we should look into other aspects... Leo might just be a pawn. The real mastermind is still in the shadows."
I nodded, feeling heavy-hearted, "Yes, we need to keep investigating."
At that moment, Simon brought some important news. "Caroline, I found some new leads about Leo. A couple of days ago, Leo took Briar home, and Renee also went home once."
My heart tightened, "Renee? Hasn't she been elusive? Why would she suddenly go home?"
"Yeah, I found it strange too. Renee seems to be in contact with Leo, and I also found her current address."
"Are they living together now?"
Simon shook his head, "No. They went home for three days and then returned. Renee stayed for one day, overlapping with them for just a day."
I pondered for a moment, a bold idea forming in my mind, "Simon, do you think we should find Renee?"
Renee might be the key to unraveling this mystery! But honestly, I didn't want to deal with Renee. And her whereabouts had always been a mystery. We tried contacting her, but her phone was always unanswered. We couldn't ask Leo to contact her either.
Royce suggested, "Why don't we go to her place directly?"
I hesitated and then refused, "Of course not! If we go looking for her rashly, won't we alert her?"
"Then we can have Simon scout it out first. He's good at this kind of thing."
That could work. But that would mean Simon would have to "travel" again. I felt a bit guilty, "We keep making Simon run around. Maybe we should send one of your men instead."
Royce said, "That's possible. I'll arrange it. Don't worry, you've been too stressed lately."
