In the past, I might've suggested Briar come home with me for the night, but today, I just couldn't bring myself to say it.

I couldn't trust this family like I used to.

If there was any lingering affection after my divorce from Brandon, it was only because of Briar.

When Briar heard us talking about Renee, she said to me, "I don't miss Mom anymore. Whether she comes back or not doesn't matter to me. I just want to live well with Dad!"

Even though I was determined to distance myself from them, this dinner left me feeling uneasy. I realized I hadn't had a proper meal all day.

As we left the restaurant, Leo said to me, "By the way, I was so busy taking care of the kids that I forgot to ask you something."

"What is it? Go ahead."

I thought Leo was going to ask me for money.

But he said, "Has anything happened at your place recently? Like electrical maintenance or something?"

Seeing my confused expression, he quickly added, "It's nothing. I just heard that the whole city seems to be doing some electrical maintenance, and many neighborhoods are being checked... So I thought I'd ask since it might be near your place."

I realized he was hinting at the fact that the listening devices had all gone dead!

I didn't really understand the technical details, as Savannah had handled it all.

The devices probably went dead due to a power outage, but I hadn't asked for specifics. Now I needed to give Leo an explanation.

I nodded, "I think so. My mom mentioned something about it, but I didn't ask for details. City life is like that, right? Electrical and water maintenance happens every now and then. When I lived somewhere else, it was the same."

Leo seemed relieved. "I see..."

He glanced at Briar's backpack again.

I had a feeling they had brought some gadgets, but I didn't say anything.

In the end, I didn't invite Briar to stay over.

Leo looked a bit disappointed but left with Briar.

I took Brett home, deep in thought.

In the elevator, Brett tugged at my hand.

"Mom, can you tell me what happened today?"

I looked down at him. "Why?"

"Because I was watching you and Mr. Schmidt talk, and something seemed off between you two..."

I whispered, "It's not that something was off. It's just that Briar's behavior made me think things aren't that simple."

"Mom, are you still mad about me secretly bringing her food?"

Brett's mention of that incident brought back memories.

Back then, Briar had run off to another house and almost went missing, causing chaos for all of us!

Remembering it all, I tapped Brett's head. "I'm not mad about that. But since you brought it up, I need to remind you not to do that again..."

"Of course. I'll listen to you, Mom."

Brett hugged my hand. "I watched Briar today like you said, but she didn't seem different!"

"If you think so, that's good. But I think Briar has grown up and thinks more than before..."

During dinner, while talking to Leo, I kept an eye on the kids. I noticed they didn't talk much.

They said they missed each other and wanted to play, but when together, they didn't know what to do. They couldn't run off while we ate.

But that was fine, at least they didn't cause trouble.

"Thanks for cooperating with me." I squeezed Brett's hand.

Back home, he quickly went to bed. I went to my room and organized the papers on my desk.

Simon called, saying there was progress on the license plate Savannah had given him and the investigation.

"It's not convenient to discuss over the phone. I'm worried about any issues. Let's meet up soon. There's no urgent news, but we should share information."

Relieved, I offered to treat him and Kathy to dinner.

Simon hesitated. "Why should I come if you're treating her?"

I laughed. "Don't you want to see Kathy?"

He stammered on the phone.

Something was definitely going on between them!

I couldn't help but gossip. "Tell me, if you don't want to see Kathy, I won't invite her. We can meet alone."

Simon finally said, "Invite her. You two are good friends, and she's involved in this too. We all need to know the details."

True, Kathy had been busy but kept up with everything.

I felt happy to have such good friends but also sad.

Because of me, their lives had become so tumultuous!

Sensing my mood, Simon reassured me, telling me not to overthink.
