If Kelly knew about any of this, she'd probably be very upset.

I told them what I had just discussed with Brett. "So it was Briar who took him out. A few days ago, I just thought Briar was a bit odd, but after today, I really feel uncomfortable..."

Kathy shook her head. "I think we shouldn't overthink it. She's still just a kid. I have mixed feelings about today. I don't think Briar intentionally took Brett out, and their bond doesn't seem fake."

After Kathy left and while Kelly was still out, Royce and I decided to beef up security at home.

We installed surveillance cameras and hired professional bodyguards to keep an eye on Brett.

The bodyguards could only stick around for about two weeks, just to see if there were any shady characters lurking.

After that, it would be up to us to keep the kids safe.

Royce stayed close these past few days.

His calm and decisive nature made me feel incredibly secure.

One night, we were sitting in the living room. Brett had already fallen asleep, and Royce had carried him to bed.

Royce held my hand, his voice gentle. "Caroline, you've been through a lot lately."

I shook my head, leaning on his shoulder. "With you by my side, it doesn't feel that hard... I think it's you who's been through a lot."

He had personally arranged the security and hired the bodyguards.

Royce was silent for a moment, holding me gently.

I started to feel sleepy, my eyelids growing heavy.

Then Royce suddenly said, "Caroline, I want to officially get engaged to you..."

I sat up, startled, thinking I had misheard. "What did you say?"

We had just made our relationship official recently, and now he was already thinking about marriage?

Royce quickly explained, "I want to be part of your family, to protect you and Brett forever."

My heart warmed.

But I hesitated. "Royce, I'm touched. But things are too complicated right now. I don't want you to be in danger because of us."

Royce held me, cupping my face.

His gaze was deep, his voice firm. "Caroline, I don't care about the danger. I just want to be with you, to protect you and Brett. No matter how tough the future is, I'll be by your side."

Even though he said that, I still didn't want to rush into another marriage.

Royce saw the hesitation on my face. "You still can't easily accept me, can you?"

I quickly explained, "It's not that... I just think things are really complicated right now. And will getting married ensure the kids' safety? I don't think so."

Royce had so much to deal with already.

If we got married, he'd have to take full responsibility for me and my big family.

"Royce, this isn't a small matter. I don't want you to regret it later. Let's hold off for now."

"Not even an engagement?" Royce's eyes were sad. "I just want a legitimate reason to take care of you."

I bit my lip gently. "It's not that I don't want to be with you, it's just that right now..."
