Husband plans to kill me Chapter 379
Leo was quiet for a moment before finally letting out a sigh. "Alright, I get it. It's cool. Next time, let's just take the kids out for a meal. Briar said she wants to hang out with Brett."
I nodded. "Sure thing, no problem."
I couldn't quite figure out if Leo brought up this investment plan to test the waters or if he genuinely wanted my help.
There was a hint of disappointment in his voice, but I didn't budge.
I knew that if I agreed too easily, it might complicate things further.
Especially since he and Renee hadn't divorced yet.
I didn't want to get tangled up with the Jordan family any more than necessary.
After leaving the café, Royce patted my shoulder and then pulled me into a hug.
"You did the right thing. Leo's startup plan isn't ready. Investing rashly would only get you into trouble."
I nodded, though I still felt uneasy. "Honestly, I just don't want too much contact with the Jordan family. His startup might even be using the joint assets he has with Renee."
I felt for Leo and Briar's situation, of course.
But I also knew I couldn't make irrational decisions out of sympathy.
Brandon was still a ticking time bomb...
A couple of days later, I got a message from Joanna.
[Caroline, I just heard that Leo's having trouble finding investors. He might be dealing with some shady people. Be careful not to get dragged into it.]
Reading the message, my feelings grew even more complicated.
If Leo was really at a dead end, would he do something irrational?
I hesitated but decided to talk to him again.
I had been really busy lately and didn't expect to keep meeting with Leo.
I dialed Leo's number.
Soon, his tired voice came through. "Caroline, what's up?"
I could faintly hear Briar in the background, so I guessed he was at home and asked how Briar was doing.
"She's fine, reading a storybook. Do you want to talk to her?"
I said no and asked Leo to go to another room to talk.
He probably guessed what I wanted to discuss and quickly moved. "Alright, you can talk now. Briar can't hear us."
I asked, "Leo, I heard you're having trouble finding investors... What's going on?"
I tried to sound concerned.
Leo let out a bitter laugh. "It's true, things aren't going well... But starting a business is never easy. Don't worry, I won't give up easily."
I hesitated but decided to warn him. "Leo, I know things are tough, but be careful... Starting a business is a big deal. Don't get yourself into more trouble. If the risks are too high, it might be better to find a job."
Leo fell silent.
I felt uneasy, waiting for his response.
Finally, he said, "Thanks, Caroline. I'll be careful."
But I could sense the distance in his words.
Maybe it was because I refused to invest and help him.
After hanging up, I still felt uneasy.
I was worried about Leo's situation, but I knew I had done all I could.
Even if I wanted to use him to investigate Renee, I didn't want Leo to get caught up in anything dangerous.
Because Briar was still so young!
In the following days, I kept an eye on Leo's situation.
Joanna occasionally sent me updates about Leo.
He seemed to still be looking for investors, but things weren't looking good.
Royce also told me he had Simon check on Leo.
This was serious. We even suspected it might involve Alfonso, but surprisingly, Leo's contacts didn't include Alfonso.
This meant we still had no leads on the Oceancrest City matter.
Until one day.
Royce came to pick me up for a date, and after dinner, we went for a walk by the river.
This had become a regular activity for us.
With so many worries and things to handle, we found walking to be a good arrangement.
We could talk and discuss our plans while walking.
During our walk, Royce suddenly received a call.
His expression turned serious after a few words.
Sensing the change in his tone, I stopped walking.
Royce stopped with me and said into the phone, "Alright, I understand... I'm with Caroline now. We'll head over soon."
He hung up and turned to me. "Caroline, Simon said Leo might be involved in a dispute, possibly related to illegal fundraising."
My heart sank. "What's going on?"
Royce shook his head. "Not sure yet, but it seems he's been dealing with some shady investment companies and might have been taken advantage of."
I immediately called Leo, but no one answered.
After trying a few times, I had no choice but to call Briar.
Briar's voice was cheerful. "Ms. Sharp, why are you calling me?"
"Is your dad home? Is he with you?"
Briar said, "He's not home. He said he had something important to do and would be back late..."
"Are you home alone?"
I couldn't help but worry.
Leo had mentioned Briar's school situation was still undecided.
And now he was leaving Briar home alone...
Was Leo really serious about this startup, even to the point of obsession?
"Make sure you stay safe at home, lock the doors and windows, and don't open the door for strangers."
Out of concern for the child, I gave a few instructions.
Briar replied, "Okay, I know!"
After hanging up, my unease grew, and I decided to find Leo the next morning.
The next day, Royce and I went to Leo's rented apartment.
Leo had given me the address during our last meeting.
I knocked for a long time before someone finally answered.
It was Briar. She looked surprised to see us.
"Ms. Sharp, Mr. Castillo, why are you here?" Briar asked softly.
"Is your dad home?" I tried to keep my voice calm.
Briar shook her head. "He didn't come home last night."
My heart sank. "Do you know where he went?"
"He didn't say, just that he had something important to handle... He called me last night, said he ordered takeout for me, and told me to go to bed after eating."
Briar blinked. "Ms. Sharp, did something happen to my dad?"
