Husband plans to kill me Chapter 385
Meanwhile, Briar's emotions were all over the place.
She started asking about Leo more often, sometimes even crying quietly in the middle of the night.
I tried to comfort her, but she was still really upset.
One night, I woke up feeling uneasy and saw a small figure standing at the door, which almost gave me a heart attack.
I turned on the light and saw it was Briar.
She suddenly ran into my room, her face streaked with tears, crying, "Ms. Sharp, I dreamed that Daddy was taken away, and I'll never see him again..."
I was stunned for a moment before saying, "Don't worry, Briar. It was just a dream. Your dad will be okay."
"Ms. Sharp, I really don't want to lose my dad..."
She kept repeating this over and over.
It took me a long time to calm Briar down and get her back to sleep. That night, I called Royce.
The next day, Royce and I decided to take Briar to see a psychologist.
We had a good reason, after all, Leo was in custody.
After understanding Briar's situation, the psychologist suggested we try to keep her routine as normal as possible and give her lots of love and support.
The psychologist said, "Briar is very young and at a sensitive stage. Any stress could cause her to break down. You need to make her feel safe and loved, helping her through this tough time."
I nodded, but my thoughts were heavy.
After all, Royce and I weren't her biological parents, and there was still some distance between us!
Renee must have known about Leo's arrest by now, but she hadn't asked about Briar's situation.
What would happen to Briar's future?
Back home, Royce and I discussed it and decided to let Briar stay with me for the time being.
Even though having her around made me uneasy, I couldn't abandon her now...
I had a serious talk with Kelly and Zola, asking them to let me know right away if they noticed anything unusual.
A few days later, there was finally some progress in Leo's case.
Even though his crimes were serious, since he wasn't the mastermind, the lawyer thought he might get a lighter sentence.
Hearing this news, I breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Though Leo still faced serious charges, at least Briar's fear of "losing her dad" wouldn't come true.
The next day, Royce and I went to see Leo's lawyer.
We sat in the law firm's conference room, surrounded by stacks of documents and evidence.
Leo's lawyer adjusted his glasses and said seriously, "Based on this evidence, Leo was indeed a pawn. He wasn't the mastermind but a manipulated tool. We can apply for bail, but he must cooperate with the investigation. But the person behind this is still unknown, so be prepared for a big case."
Royce and I understood.
The lawyer gave us a lot of precautions before starting the process.
A few days later, Leo was finally released on bail.
Compared to before, he looked much more worn out, with a hint of fatigue and unease in his eyes.
When Royce and I picked him up, he kept his head down, barely daring to look at us, his voice hoarse, "Thank you."
I looked at him, feeling conflicted, "Leo, are you okay?"
Leo gave a bitter smile and didn't answer right away.
He hesitated, then finally said softly, "Caroline, there are things I can't talk about. You should stay away from me, or you'll be in danger."
My heart tightened, and I quickly asked, "What do you mean? What are you hiding?"
Leo shook his head, his tone full of helplessness, "That person is beyond your reach. He has a vast criminal network, and I'm just a small part of it. If you keep interfering, he'll come after you."
He added, "I can only try to distance myself, but he won't let me go... By the way, has Renee contacted me?"
Why would he mention Renee now?
Royce and I exchanged a glance and shook our heads, "No, she hasn't even asked about Briar."
Royce frowned and said to Leo, "That's secondary. Leo, we need more information to help you. If you don't cooperate, we can't protect you."
Leo was silent for a while, then sighed.
"Alright, I can only tell you this—Alfonso and Aurelia are the real masterminds behind this. They used me for illegal fundraising, but their true goal was money laundering and market manipulation. You should be careful; they're already watching you."
Hearing Alfonso and Aurelia's names, I was stunned!
How could they be involved in this?
But when Royce and I tried to ask more, Leo just shook his head, refusing to speak further, only saying he wanted to see Briar.
Reluctantly, I let him take Briar temporarily, but arranged for Brett to meet them often.
I didn't want Briar to go back with him because Leo's state was too strange.
But, no matter what, they were father and daughter.
I kept telling myself that even though my relationship with Briar had improved, she wasn't as simple as I imagined.
Leo's warning made Royce and me uneasy.
We decided to keep a low profile for now, trying to avoid attracting Alfonso's attention.
However, things didn't go as smoothly as we hoped.
A few days after Leo was released, I received an anonymous call.
A deep voice on the other end said, "Caroline, if you don't want your child to get hurt, stay away from Leo."
My heart tightened, and I quickly asked, "Who are you? What do you want?"
The caller sneered, with a hint of threat in his tone, "Who I am isn't important. What's important is that you listen. Otherwise, you'll face the consequences."
Hearing this, I frowned, instinctively wanting to get more information, but the person was very cautious, only issuing threats and quickly hanging up.
I broke out in a cold sweat and rushed to the children's room to check on my child.
As Brett grew day by day, I was grateful that this room connected two bedrooms, making it spacious enough.
Brett was playing with a puzzle and pulled my hand when he saw me, saying, "Mom, Mr. Castillo's puzzle is so pretty. Can we hang it up when I'm done?"
"Of course. I'll help you frame it, and we can hang it on the wall."
I tried not to show my unease.
After playing puzzles with Brett for a while, I couldn't help but contact Royce.
