Husband plans to kill me Chapter 397
Our whole family was on edge, trying to help Brett get back to his usual self as quickly as possible.
Over the past few days, Brett seemed noticeably more cheerful and had stopped mentioning the kidnapping. In the days right after it happened, he would have nightmares and tell me about the bad guys he dreamed of...
But now everything seemed fine, and I was less worried.
"Got it. If I need to find you, I'll message you first." Royce kissed my forehead.
We agreed to spend every weekend together from now on.
On Monday morning, I arrived at the office.
Asher was already waiting for me in the office.
When he saw me come in, he smiled and said, "Caroline, the project is progressing smoothly. Everyone's been working hard for days, so I thought we could take the team on a retreat to relax a bit. It'll probably be for a day or two, so we won't be pushing the project timeline during that period."
I smiled and nodded, replying in a relaxed tone, "Sure, everyone has been working really hard lately. Asher, have you decided on the location for the retreat?"
Asher handed me a plan, "Yes, it's at the resort in Starry Sky District. I've already made the arrangements, so everyone can unwind there for a couple of days."
I looked over the plan and didn't see any issues.
I nodded in agreement, "Alright, let's go with your plan. I'll join you and bring Madeline along. I'll also check if Kathy and the others want to come."
But considering this was Asher's team-building event, I didn't want to make a big deal out of it by bringing too many people, so I kept it to myself.
On the day of the retreat, our group arrived at the resort.
The employees were excited and quickly scattered to try out the various entertainment facilities.
Asher and I sat in the restaurant, sipping tea and discussing work.
Even though the employees were on a retreat, as their supervisors, we naturally had work on our minds.
"Asher, the project has been going well lately, right?"
Asher nodded, "Of course. Don't you trust my work?"
As we were talking, I suddenly felt like someone was taking pictures of us.
I turned to look and saw a large figure quickly hide behind a pillar.
My heart skipped a beat, and my gut told me it might be Lowell!
Asher noticed me turning and quickly asked, "What's wrong? Did you see something?"
"I think I saw Lowell..."
"You stay here. I'll go check it out."
Asher got up and headed in the direction I was looking.
But the person moved quickly, and Asher came back shaking his head, having not caught anyone.
I immediately called Simon, and he picked up quickly.
I spoke urgently, "Simon, I just saw someone who looked a lot like Lowell at the resort... Can you check what Lowell has been up to since Brandon went to prison?"
If they were indeed connected as we suspected, then this might be part of their plan.
They could have coordinated their actions before Brandon went to prison!
Simon's voice was serious, "Alright, I'll look into it right away. Caroline, be careful. If it really is Lowell, he might be dangerous."
The last time Briar showed up in front of Brett and me, it scared all my friends.
I felt uneasy but tried to stay calm, "I know, I'll be careful."
After hanging up, Asher noticed my unease and asked with concern, "Caroline, what's going on? Can the person you called help you investigate? Did you really see Lowell?"
I hesitated for a moment but decided to tell him, "Asher, there were a few things that happened recently that I didn't tell you about..."
I had wanted Asher to focus on leading his project team, so I hadn't mentioned these things to him.
Who would have thought we'd run into Lowell at the resort?
After hearing about Lowell stalking Brett and me, Asher was shocked and cursed, "Those jerks have nothing better to do than cause trouble!"
Asher had always been straightforward, so I wasn't surprised by his reaction.
But I was thinking about how we had brought the employees here for a retreat. Not many people knew about this.
How did Lowell end up here?
When Asher asked me, I shook my head, feeling puzzled, "I don't know. But I've asked Simon to investigate, so hopefully, we'll have answers soon."
Asher nodded, his face serious, "Caroline, don't worry. I'll protect you. Enjoy the retreat and don't let this ruin your mood. With Royce not here, I'll take care of you."
I chuckled, "Let's not tell him about this. If he finds out, he'll rush over here."
Asher replied, "I'm more worried he'll blame me for not protecting you."
We talked about Royce, and the atmosphere lightened up a bit.
Even though I didn't know why Lowell was here, I tried to stay calm.
Asher realized I wasn't in the mood to discuss work and closed his laptop, "Let's go get something to eat. No more boring work talk."
I felt a warmth in my heart and nodded, "Thank you, Asher."
That evening, Simon called me.
Seeing his name on the caller ID, I quickly answered. Simon's tone was serious, "Caroline, I found some information about Lowell. Since Brandon went to prison, Lowell hasn't been idle. He's been frequenting some underground places, seemingly planning something."
Underground places?
But he was a loafer with no money. What could he be doing there?
My heart tightened, and I quickly asked, "Do you know what he's planning? Any specific leads?"
Simon was silent for a moment before slowly saying, "No concrete leads yet, but I found out he's been in contact with Alfonso. They might be plotting something together!"
Alfonso again!
I frowned, feeling uneasy, "What's Alfonso's deal? I thought Leo's recent business failure would keep Alfonso quiet for a while!"
Simon explained, "Even though Alfonso's men were arrested, his influence remains. Lowell and Brandon might be trying to use Alfonso to get back at you."
My heart sank, thinking about the figure I saw earlier, and I started to worry, "What should we do?"
Simon quickly reassured me, "Caroline, don't worry. I'll keep investigating and find Lowell's whereabouts. In the meantime, be careful and try not to be alone."
If Lowell caught me, who knew what could happen?
