"What's with the formalities?" I waved my hand dismissively. "But why'd you just show up out of the blue today? You didn't call ahead, so I figured you were busy."

Leo sighed. "I've been swamped with a new job, but Briar kept saying she missed Brett, so she insisted we come over... I thought it was a good chance to bring her by."

He quickly added, "We remembered your address from last time. Hope you don't mind us dropping by unannounced."

"Not at all! Now that you're here, you're our guests," I said, trying to gauge Leo's reaction.

Sure enough, his expression shifted, looking a bit uneasy, just like earlier. I had a hunch Leo had another reason for bringing Briar here today. This was giving me a headache. I didn't expect to be dealing with kid-related issues all day...

First, Brandon came to talk about the kids' custody, and now Leo showed up. Seemed like I couldn't escape the Jordan family drama.

With that in mind, I decided not to invite them upstairs. I was still upset about Briar planting a bug in my house, so I didn't trust their intentions.

Glancing at Briar's little backpack, I casually said to Leo, "Since you're here, give me a moment. I haven't had dinner yet. I'll bring Brett down, and we can all go out to eat."

Then I looked at Briar. "Briar, have you eaten yet?"

Briar looked at me and said, "Not yet!"

"Alright, I'll go get Brett. You wait here for a bit."

I smiled apologetically at Leo. "We recently hired a new housekeeper who's still getting the hang of things, and with a little kid at home, it's really inconvenient to have guests over right now... If you're planning to stay in town for a few more days, I can arrange for you to stay at another property."

Leo's eyes showed a hint of suspicion. From calling them guests to now not wanting them upstairs, he must have some thoughts about it. But he wouldn't show it in front of me. He just said, "I understand. Go ahead and bring Brett down. Let's go eat."

At least he hadn't confronted me directly. I breathed a sigh of relief and went to get Brett.

Before meeting Leo and Briar, I spoke to Brett. "Brett, I need you to promise me a few things."

I knelt down to look Brett in the eye. Seeing my serious expression, Brett scratched his head. "What's wrong, Mom? Didn't you say we were going to have dinner with Briar?"

Clearly, the recent events had made Brett more mature.

I said, "We are, but Briar might be feeling a bit down lately. Can you keep an eye on her for me?"

"What do you mean by 'keep an eye on her'?" Brett didn't understand.

Seeing Brett's innocent face made me feel bad.

"I mean... just pay attention to Briar. If anything seems off, let me know. And when we get back, tell me everything you talked about with her today."

Brett nodded. "Sure, I'll tell you everything. But is something wrong, Mom? You've been acting kinda weird around Briar lately."

I sighed, realizing how perceptive Brett was. "I can't explain right now, but this is important for all of us. After everything we've been through, you know I'm doing this for your sake. Just promise me you won't tell Briar about our conversation, okay?"

Saying this made me feel uneasy. I felt like I was using Brett, something I never wanted to do. Even during the divorce and custody battle with Brandon, I tried to keep the kids out of it and just fought for their custody and care. I always handled things myself, never wanting to drag the kids into our issues. But the Jordan family had messed up everything, affecting all the kids...

Just thinking about Jason being taken to the beach made my heart ache. "This is important for me and our family. I hope you can promise me this."

I rubbed my eyes. "But if you really don't want to, I won't force you. Just don't tell Briar about our conversation, okay?"

Brett quickly nodded and wiped my tears with his little hand. "Don't worry, Mom. I won't tell her anything! This is our secret... And I promised Mr. Castillo I'd protect you!"

Brett said, "Mom, you cry so easily now. You're like a crybaby."

I couldn't help but laugh. "A crybaby? Do I look that weak?"

"Not weak at all. You're the strongest woman I know," Brett said, holding my hand as we got into the elevator.

"Mom, after you dropped me off at school yesterday, a lot of people said you were really pretty!"

"Really? Were you happy to hear that?"

Brett nodded. "Of course! It made me feel proud!"

We laughed and chatted as we walked. When we reached Leo and Briar, they didn't seem to notice anything unusual.

Leo was on the phone but quickly hung up when he saw us. He took Briar's hand. "Didn't you say you wanted to see Brett? Why aren't you saying anything now?"

Briar stood there, looking a bit dazed. I didn't know what Briar was thinking, but her expression gave me chills.

Brett took the initiative, grabbing Briar's hand. "Briar! Long time no see!"

They greeted each other, and after a moment, Briar smiled. "Yeah, it's been a while! I've been studying hard lately. How about you, Brett?"

"Me too!"

The two kids started chatting, and I led them away, not saying much to Leo for now.
