Husband plans to kill me Chapter 319
What else could I do after Kelly said that?
I had no choice but to dress up nicely, put on some light makeup, and then take Brett to school.
The school entrance was bustling with people, and many cars were parked along the roadside.
When I dropped Brett off, I did attract some attention. I could feel the kids' eyes sizing up both Brett and me.
A little girl with two pigtails came bouncing over, stopping in front of Brett. She looked up at me seriously and said, "Ma'am, are you Brett's mom?"
Her sweet voice lifted my spirits. I bent down slightly to look at her.
The girl had big, beautiful features, and you could tell she was going to grow up to be a beauty.
She was also very polite, clearly a child from a well-mannered family.
I smiled and said, "Yes, I'm Brett's mom. What's your name?"
The little girl loudly replied, "My name is Rosalind Claire!"
She happily explained the origin of her name, and I smiled and said, "That's a lovely name. Your parents must love you very much."
Rosalind beamed and then asked, "Can I go to school with Brett?"
I nodded, watching the two of them walk into the school with smiles on their faces.
It had been a long time since I experienced a moment like this.
Since I got sick, I hadn't been the one to take Brett to school. Our nanny had been handling it.
As I walked away, I kept thinking about the morning, but I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me. It made me very uneasy.
For a moment, I thought it might be Lowell and his crew making a comeback, but when I turned around, I didn't see anyone suspicious.
The sense of foreboding grew stronger, so I decided to walk around instead of heading straight to my car.
It was rush hour near the school, so the crowd was normal. Maybe it was just another parent watching me, but the gaze felt malicious, like it had been fixed on me from the start. I couldn't let my guard down!
I wandered around the school area for a while until the feeling of being watched disappeared. Only then did I head back to my car, taking a roundabout route.
Once in the car, I drove straight to the office, feeling anxious the whole way.
I didn't know who was watching me or who sent them, but I knew, just as I had told Royce, that this city was no longer safe.
It felt like the entire city was under someone's control. We didn't know who, but Royce and I suspected it was the elusive figure we had been trying to investigate—Nightshade.
Nightshade was a highly dangerous individual. Our knowledge of him was just the tip of the iceberg, not even close to the full picture.
Back at the office, the more I thought about it, the more scared I became. I quickly called Simon and told him about Brett's school drop-off.
Simon sounded surprised. "Caroline, don't panic. Try to remember the time and any details. I can check the nearby surveillance cameras for anything suspicious."
I frowned at his words.
I wanted to say that the area was crowded with parents, making it like finding a needle in a haystack.
But then I remembered feeling uneasy after watching Brett and Rosalind leave and heading to the parking lot.
I gave Simon all the details, hoping it would help.
Simon assured me that the information was enough and that he would investigate, though he couldn't guarantee results.
I sighed. "It's okay. Just do your best. We can't rush this."
After hanging up, I was about to head upstairs when I got a call from Asher.
Asher sounded hesitant, and I knew he had something to say or couldn't make it to the meeting.
I asked directly, "Asher, are you not coming to the meeting today? Are you having trouble telling me?"
Relieved, Asher said, "I was just about to tell you... Our project has hit a snag, and I'm busy with meetings. I can't make it today. Can we reschedule?"
I agreed.
"But we can't delay this meeting too long. It needs to be resolved this week because I have other commitments."
Asher quickly assured me, "Don't worry. We'll fix the issue today. Call me anytime tomorrow or the day after for the meeting."
After hanging up, I returned to my office to review the upcoming work plans.
Since taking back the company, I hadn't fully adjusted to the workload and pace.
Brandon had left the company in a mess, and his family had caused lingering issues.
If it weren't for Gerald's emotional investment, I wouldn't have wanted to take over.
I even considered selling the company and starting fresh, focusing on Gerald's original business.
But I knew that was irresponsible.
After a while, I discussed my upcoming priorities with Madeline and mentioned the meeting in a few days.
"I might not be in the office tomorrow, so please handle any partner communications."
After giving these instructions, I checked the trending topics on my phone.
NexGen Innovations had been quiet, likely because we hadn't had any meetings or news, leaving them without direction.
Seeing their announcement still prominently on Twitter, I smirked.
Such underhanded tactics would backfire eventually.
There was no rush. They were just testing the waters and wouldn't act immediately.
With everything prepared, I called Kathy to discuss the details of Isadora's baby's one-month celebration tomorrow.
