I turned around, and Kathy teased, "Royce just left, and now you don't wanna talk to us anymore?"

I elbowed her playfully. "Come on, it's not like that! I was just lost in thought."

I could've talked to Kathy about Leo and Briar, especially all the gossip and theories about the kids. But with other people around, I couldn't spill the beans just yet. So, I shot Kathy a look, signaling I'd fill her in later.

Isadora called out from across the way, "You guys picked a great spot. When my kid's a bit older, I think I'll bring him here for a picnic. It's always good to get closer to nature."

We nodded in agreement. "Absolutely."

At first, we weren't too sure about the picnic idea, but seeing how beautiful the scenery was, and with Brett and Briar playing in the distance, I suddenly felt at ease, sitting on the chair and chatting with them.

We talked for a long time, and everyone was really happy. Especially after being in nature, everyone felt recharged.

As we were wrapping up, Royce and Leo walked over from a distance, and I realized it was getting late. It was time to end today's camping trip, even though I was a bit reluctant.

I had a sudden idea and asked, "Do you guys wanna actually camp here tonight? We already set up the tents..."

We had enough tents, three in total, but Isadora hesitated. "I can't stay here... I told the nanny to watch my kid for the day. After having a kid, I realize how much he ties me down. I need to go back and check on him. Plus, Marshall said he doesn't want me staying out overnight."

We nodded in understanding and let her go, but the rest of us decided to stay the night, taking the opportunity to relax outside.

Isadora told us she wished she could stay but really couldn't, and that we'd catch up another time.

Soon, Marshall came to pick her up, and we watched them leave, feeling a bit envious of their strong relationship.

Kathy and I shared a tent, and surprisingly, Joanna joined us too. This arrangement gave Leo some space, and he decided to stay the night as well, since he had nothing planned for the next day.

He had taken time off to join us for the picnic and wanted to make the most of it. Plus, he mentioned that Briar had been feeling down lately, saying she had no friends at home after seeing Brett. So, he hoped they could bond today.

I assured him it was fine, and the camping would give the kids a chance to have fun.

While Kathy, Joanna, and I were in the tent, thinking about where to put Brett, Royce came over.

Brett called me from outside the tent, seeming a bit shy.

I told him Kathy and Joanna were here too, so there was no need to be shy.

Brett peeked in and greeted Kathy and Joanna.

Royce gave me a look, indicating he had something to say to me.

I told Brett, "Stay with Kathy and Joanna for a bit. I'll be right back."

I left the tent, and Royce led me a little way off.

The dusk made the campsite a bit dim, but the nearby streetlights added a touch of natural romance.

We walked, and Royce held my hand, then sighed. "I still couldn't get anything out of Leo. He's very tight-lipped, especially around me. Maybe because he and I haven't interacted much before, so he doesn't want to tell me anything."

I nodded, expecting this. "He's very cautious. If he had told you everything, I'd be surprised."

Royce frowned, "But now that I couldn't get any information from him, how will you continue investigating?"

I shook my head, "Don't worry about it. If it comes to it, we'll just have to give Simon more work. But honestly, it would be great if we could find another private investigator. One Simon isn't enough for us."

Royce chuckled at my comment.

After a while, he said, "You're right. It would be great if we knew a few more detectives like Simon."

I had already anticipated that Leo would be tight-lipped.

When Royce told me he might not get much out of him, I was mentally prepared.

After all, my connection with Leo was because we were both part of the Jordan family. Now that I was divorced from Brandon, and his situation with Renee was still unresolved, it would be strange if he told me anything.

Royce said that although he didn't get much from Leo, he felt this had something to do with Renee.

He mentioned that from a man's perspective, when talking to Leo about relationships, it seemed like Leo still had feelings for Renee but knew she wasn't right for him and could cause trouble.

But because of Briar, Leo wasn't planning to divorce yet. There must be some other interests tying them together, preventing them from easily mentioning divorce.

I nodded, "Renee is ruthless, but she never looked down on Leo or thought he was useless. Even now, with her gone, he hasn't brought up divorce. There must be some other interests binding them."

We couldn't investigate or ask directly about this; we'd have to wait for an opportunity.

Royce agreed with me.

As we walked to the lakeside, the twilight reflecting on the water, I felt a sudden sadness.

But then, Royce leaned in and gently kissed the corner of my lips.

His voice was low and restrained, "Caroline, don't worry. I told you before, no matter what happens, I'll be with you."

Those words still held true today.

Feeling a sudden rush of emotion, I stood on tiptoe and kissed his chin, then turned and ran.

Royce tried to catch me, but I was too quick.
