Before I could gather my thoughts, a nearby door suddenly swung open.

“What are you doing over there? This is a dead end, usually where we put the trash…”

A petite girl walked over, and when she saw Lowell standing there with me and the child trembling behind him, she frowned immediately. “Who are you? I’m calling the police!”

“Miss, please go back inside!”

Lowell was already furious, and I was worried he might lash out at the girl.

The girl reacted quickly, stepping back and closing the door. She shouted at us, “Don’t worry, I’ll call the police for you!”

“I have two employees here; I’ll get them to help you!”

A moment later, the door opened again, and two men rushed out. “What’s going on?”

Lowell, seeing them, ignored me and snarled, “I advise you to stay out of this! This is between me and this woman!”

One of the guys, summoning his courage, said, “Whatever your issue is, this lady has a child with her. It’s not right for someone your size to bully them.”

The other man handed him a baseball bat. “Come on, let’s go help her.”

“If he tries anything, we’ll fight back. It’s self-defense!”

I glanced at them gratefully and realized this was a coffee shop.

No wonder they had so many staff.

The toy store Brett and I had visited only had one employee.

The girl was behind the door, holding her phone, seemingly calling the police.

Seeing this, Lowell was almost beside himself with rage. He turned and came at me.

I dodged quickly, but it was a dead end, and the wall was right behind me. If he came at me again, there was almost no way I could avoid him…

“Brett, run! Let the men help you!”

I pushed Brett away.

His small body could just slip past Lowell.

Brett hesitated for a second, but seeing my determined face, he took off running.

Lowell tried to grab him but missed.

The two men quickly ushered Brett into the shop and then headed back toward us…

Realizing he couldn’t escape and might be taken by the police, Lowell seemed to lose all restraint and swung at me again.

I could only raise the toy box I had bought for Brett to shield myself.

The toy box, which was meant for Brett, now became my shield.

Lowell punched the box, crushing it. “You bitch! Nothing good ever happens when I run into you!”

“Then why are you following us?” I found him utterly ridiculous.

He was the one who came after us. I had already said so much to him earlier. If he had just left, I wouldn’t have thought of calling the police!

And it wouldn’t have drawn anyone else’s attention!

Lowell sneered and punched the box again. “Do you think calling the police will do anything? They’ll just detain me for a few days!”

Then he lowered his voice suddenly. “I’m in touch with Brandon now. You should know we have people backing us!”

“I came to tell you that we’re not who we used to be. We have the power to deal with you now. Get ready to live in fear!”

These words didn’t sound like something Lowell, who was practically illiterate, would say.

My eyes widened as I realized someone else must have put these words in his mouth!

"Get lost!"

I used all my strength to throw the box at his face.

But Lowell was too big. The toy box hit his chest, making his fat jiggle, but his face remained expressionless.

"Using this against me?"

He grabbed the box and threw it far away.

The toy box’s packaging tore open, and the pieces scattered everywhere, making Brett’s distant cries even more heart-wrenching. "Mom!"

I was about to say something when Lowell raised his hand again, casting a shadow over me.

Despite his size, he moved quickly, and I felt a gust of wind brush past my ear.

Realizing I couldn’t dodge, I did my best to protect my eyes.

But the expected pain didn’t come.

I cautiously opened my eyes to see a man standing in front of me.

The man had blocked Lowell’s punch, his hand veins bulging. "Back off!"

It was Royce’s voice!

A huge weight lifted off my chest. "You finally made it!"

"I knew something was wrong when I got your call, but I didn’t know your exact location."

Royce didn’t turn around, just explained seriously.

Lowell chuckled. "Caroline, is this your lover?"

"Brandon told me you and Royce were tangled up. I didn’t expect it to be true!"

Hearing this, I was even more furious.

Royce and I had a history, but after I got married, we had no contact. Over the years, it was Brandon who had been unfaithful and living it up outside!

How dare he use such vile words to describe me, especially when he and Lowell were now in cahoots, constantly slandering me!

I wanted to retort, but Royce spoke seriously. "Whatever our relationship is, it’s none of your business."

"Think about how you’ll explain to the police about following and attacking someone."

Lowell’s eyes bulged with anger, and he moved to hit Royce, but the sound of sirens was already approaching.

As he was taken away, he glared at me viciously. "This isn’t over, Caroline!"

After the police took him away, I felt my strength leave me, almost collapsing. Royce caught me just in time, and Brett ran over, crying.

He kept calling for me, hugging my leg.

I quickly said, "It’s okay, honey, don’t cry..."

"It’s just a shame about the toys. We’ll get new ones later, okay?"

Brett sobbed, "Mom, the toys don’t matter..."

We soon went to the police station to give our statements. The three coffee shop employees came too, especially the girl who had called the police. She detailed everything that had happened.

"We have surveillance at the side door. We can check the footage..."

All the evidence showed that Lowell had followed us and attacked us first.

The three employees were practically heroes.

When we left the police station, I was still in a daze.

This city suddenly felt unsafe.
