Husband plans to kill me Chapter 316
We actually found some clues. Turns out he's been in touch with Earl and Brandon. Looks like the three of them might be forming a gang to target us!
I didn't expect things to escalate so fast.
Just a few days later, he was already tailing Brett and me.
The precious parent-child time I had painstakingly arranged was interrupted, leaving Brett with a psychological scar.
In the car, Brett was quietly sobbing, and soon he fell asleep, exhausted.
I held Brett in my arms, gently patting his back, just like when he was little.
In the back seat were two brand-new toys that Royce had just taken us to buy.
Royce was driving, occasionally glancing at us through the rearview mirror.
When we got out of the car, he even took the initiative to carry Brett into the elevator.
Maybe because Brett was asleep, we didn't mention today's incident.
When we got home, Kelly took one look and said, "Why is Brett still asleep?"
I didn't dare mention running into Lowell or the police station. I just said Brett was tired from playing.
"This kid... I'll take care of him. I'll change his clothes and put him to bed early."
Watching Kelly take Brett away, I hesitated about whether to tell her what happened today.
Royce had already guessed my thoughts and took my hand, leading me to my room. "Don't overthink it. Brett is a smart kid. He knows not to tell Grandma about this."
"I just feel that since my mom is living with us and taking care of four kids, if we don't tell her in advance, what if she encounters something unexpected..."
Kelly still goes out to buy groceries every now and then.
The whole city feels unsafe now, and it makes me uneasy.
Royce held my hand and said seriously, "It's never been completely safe. It's just that their appearances have become more frequent lately."
"But you don't need to worry too much."
"I contacted Simon today. He'll help us look into it."
How could I not worry?
"We've reported this before, and the police said they'd investigate their actions, but..."
It's a tricky situation.
If these three are just following and provoking us, even the police can't do much.
They can't just arrest them repeatedly for following us, can they?
And they can always argue that it was just a coincidence...
It's a waste of energy.
I didn't want to use public resources, so I shared my concerns with Royce.
"You don't need to worry about that. If they keep doing what they did before, we can't call the police. But now that they've directly targeted you, and they all have criminal records, the police will definitely keep an eye on them."
I hoped that would be the case.
Otherwise, I wouldn't know if I could even go out anymore!
Royce and I hadn't talked for long when there was a knock on the door.
I thought it was Kelly, so I quickly put some distance between us.
When we talked, we were very close and intimate, sitting together and holding hands.
But it was Brett who came in.
He rubbed his eyes. "Mom..."
"What's up, buddy? Weren't you asleep in the car? Why are you awake now?"
I was surprised to see Brett. "Did you wake up when Kelly was changing your clothes?"
"Yeah... Mom, I just remembered something."
Brett didn't mention today's incident. Instead, he said, "I miss Briar."
"Why'd you suddenly think of her?"
Thinking back, I realized I hadn't contacted Briar in a long time.
Ever since I found out Briar had planted a bug in our house under Leo's orders, I had been deliberately distancing them.
I've been busy with other things and haven't been in touch.
"Because of what happened today... I thought if Briar were here, she'd be smarter and better at protecting you!"
Royce and I exchanged glances. "Why would you think that?"
"Because when I played with Briar before, she seemed to know a lot about these things! She said she had encountered bad people before and didn't get caught?!"
Brett looked down, dejected. "If I were as smart and clever as Briar, I could have protected you when I saw that bad guy today."
So Brett was blaming himself!
I quickly hugged him. "Don't think that way."
"No matter how smart you are, you're still just a kid. And what Briar said might not even be true..."
Kids' make-believe games can't be taken seriously.
"It's best if you never encounter such things. And if you do, it's my job to protect you. What you did today, rushing to protect me, you can't do that again!"
I realized I hadn't properly talked to Brett about what happened today.
Brett's eyes were red. "But Mr. Castillo told me that if I encounter danger, I should protect you first because I'm a little man!"
So it was Royce who told him that?!
I stood up and glared at Royce. "Brett is just a kid. How could you instill such thoughts in him!"
Royce rubbed his forehead, looking a bit helpless.
He probably didn't expect that after saying that, we'd go through something like this.
"Brett, I did tell you that, but the premise is that you have to protect yourself first and not make your mom worry."
Royce sighed and walked over, squatting down to look at Brett seriously.
"You're a little man, but you're also a child. Your mom loves you very much and doesn't want you to take risks when you can't protect yourself."
Brett looked at me, then at Royce, somewhat understanding.
"So next time, should I listen to Mom?"
"Of course." Royce said, then added seriously, "But next time, I'll be there faster to protect you both."
"You and your mom, let me protect you."
Brett couldn't help but hug Royce, his little face pressed tightly against his head. "Thank you, Mr. Castillo."
To Brett, Royce must have seemed like a hero descending from the sky today.
Watching this, my eyes couldn't help but get misty.
If Royce hadn't arrived in time, the consequences of Lowell's punch landing on my face would have been unimaginable!
Luckily, Brett was a bit further away, and Lowell blocked his view, so he probably didn't see much.
"Alright, Brett needs to go to bed. I'll take Royce home."
