Husband plans to kill me Chapter 334
I knew that when someone wanted to talk to me, I needed to show some understanding. That way, they would feel like the conversation had a chance to continue.
So, I said to Leo, "You don't need to overthink it. When I said that to you the other day, I was just thinking that the kids are growing up. They can't be as close as they were when they were little."
I sighed softly, putting on a very melancholic expression. "But I'm definitely reluctant too. When I got home, Brett told me he really likes Briar... The two kids have been friends since they were little. How could I bear to let them lose touch? No matter what, we were once family, and we'll still have connections in the future. So, don't take my words too seriously."
I smiled awkwardly, "Actually, I haven't been in a great mood these past few days. And you suddenly showed up downstairs without giving me a heads-up…"
"So, my attitude was a bit off that day. You have to understand, my company has been dealing with a lot lately. Another company even sent us a bouquet with a hidden listening device! They've been stealing our ideas, and it's still unresolved. I've been a bit unbalanced…" I shared all this with Leo, and it indeed piqued his curiosity.
I could feel his previous wariness fading as he continued talking to me.
Especially when I mentioned the listening device.
That term was quite sensitive. He had Briar install a listening device in my house before. If I had discovered it and brought it up, my tone would have been off.
Leo could sense that.
But today, I played it well. When I mentioned it, I only referred to my company's situation, not my home.
So, Leo probably thought we didn't notice the listening device, and its failure was just due to electrical maintenance!
He felt there was nothing else going on here, and he visibly relaxed, his tone changing, "I didn’t realize there was so much going on. Bringing Briar over suddenly without a heads-up was my bad… It won't happen again."
I quickly said, "Just give me a heads-up next time. It's so easy to call or text nowadays."
"True… I just wanted to clear things up. If you think the kids shouldn't interact too much, I can accept that. I just think it was great when we were all one big family. If there's a chance, we should at least stay in touch during the holidays!”
In the end, Leo just didn't want to lose contact with my family.
Realizing this, I remembered what Simon told me earlier. Renee might be preparing something elsewhere during this time.
Was the Jordan family planning to move some people underground, doing things secretly, while Leo and others stayed in the open?
And they were starting to use Briar, such a young child.
Thinking about this, I said to Leo, "Of course. I'm not that heartless. Besides, it was Brandon who wronged me… Others have wronged me too, but it's all resolved now! I'm divorced, and the kids are innocent. You're right."
I tried to follow his lead in the conversation, but without showing too much softness.
After this call, Leo should be relieved.
But just before hanging up, I brought up another matter, "By the way, has Renee been home lately?"
"Yes. Why?" Leo's tone became tense again.
I said, "Nothing… Just wondering, with Renee not coming home every day, are you two heading towards divorce?"
Leo didn't respond for a long time after I asked this.
I added, "If it's hard to talk about, you don't have to answer. I just think it's not good for the kid. Briar is growing up and understands Renee's absence. And with Renee's current situation, if she does something that Briar sees, it'll affect her…"
I knew Leo was listening to my words.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have been silent for so long.
If they were still in contact and Leo was following Renee's instructions, he would've quickly brushed me off.
"But I'm an outsider now, and it's not my place to interfere. Even though we're family, I don't want to have any dealings with Renee! So, when you bring Briar over, don't mention her. I'll consider my ties with the Jordan family completely severed. You and Briar have the Schmidt surname, which is better for me." I didn't wait for his response and just laid out my thoughts.
This was Royce's advice to me.
After all, I was a woman, and it was best to use this trait when communicating with Leo.
It was best to make him think I was clueless, and the divorce was just a coincidence.
After a while, Leo said, "I've heard what you said. I'll seriously consider the divorce. But Briar is still young, and I don't want her to choose who to stay with yet…"
He added, "To be honest, I can't figure out Renee's intentions. I definitely can't leave Briar with her. But if she really wants custody, what then? She has more assets than I do. I'm worried that if we divorce, Briar might end up with her, and his life would be ruined."
After hanging up, I felt very conflicted.
I didn't expect Leo to have these concerns, which showed I hadn't considered enough before.
I always thought they wouldn't divorce because of some plan. I didn't realize Renee had more assets!
Leo still remembered he was a father.
But during our call, he didn't tell me much truth.
This call was just to explain some things from before and mainly to inquire about the listening device.
For now, this matter seemed settled. I told Royce about it.
Royce said he'd look into it for me and advised me not to contact Leo for now, or he might get suspicious.
I agreed and said goodnight to Royce.
