The White Wolf Chapter 108: Two Hands and a Shovel

Caspian took a drink of whiskey as he surveyed the males around him each sizing the other up. The alpha aura in the room was suffocating.

“My king” Alpha Lennon approached with a bow “A lovely evening, my compliments to the queen.”

“I'll pass them along,” Caspian replied dryly knowing the alpha was just trying to get on his good side.

Alpha Lennon was a few years older than he and had a knack for backstabbing. Caspian had made sure eyes were on him to see what he was up to.

Edmund and Luca had not visited his pack so he had suspicions about the alpha’s loyalty. Thus he brought him to the palace so he could see him.

He had hoped Enzo would help shelter some of the recon burden with Gabe but the Gamma had been in an odd mood. If he had not needed to keep his focus on the alphas and Eastern Kingdom guests he would have studied him more.

Since Enzo was not in the right frame of mind, Edmund stepped in and made his way around the room. Liqueur was sipped, cards were played, and lots were cast in different forms of gambling.

Alpha Lennon continued to compliment the evening till eventually wandering off to speak with others.

The testosterone bubbled up in the room and was amplified by the alcohol. Arguments broke out as to who was the fastest.

A hot-headed alpha approached Caspian after arguing with another “My king, let us settle this once and for all. Tomorrow let’s run with the moon in our wolves and see who is the fastest.”

“If you feel the need to, then perhaps we shall,” Caspian responded not caring.

Prince Dristan cut in “Why should we limit it to just ourselves? Let us invite the females as well and let the Queen lead them.”

Not even entertaining the idea Caspian shut it down “No this is between the males.”

Dristan was not going to let the matter go “The females may enjoy seeing us and wish to compete amongst themselves as well.

“No.” Caspian shot it down “Let the males have their competitions and leave the women to their devices.”

At the mention of the Queen, questions began to circulate the room.

“Has anybody seen the queen in her wolf?”

“Is she capable of changing?”

“What if she can’t change?”

“A kingdom with a wolf that cannot change would be a disaster.”

Interest was immediately perked around the room. A weak Queen was opened to attacks, especially by those who wished to claim her throne.

“Enough.” Caspian’s eyes were that of death as he spoke in an icy voice. “If you want to run with each other then so be it but the females will not be joining.”

Prince Dristan seemed to want to retort but thought better of it.

The males seemed to channel their energy into debates. Some getting more heated than others.

Alpha Henry pawed after the Eastern Court member he had conversed with at dinner. Off to the side of the room, they stood there with glasses of liquor in their hands.

“Are you available for tea tomorrow Alpha Wayne?” Henry pushed further.

“I will have to see what my liege has requested of me before I can answer.” He brushed him off with a bored expression.

Caspian had deduced that Alpha Wayne was a trusted advisor to the prince, making him a target of Alpha Henry. He did not intervene as the interaction seemed to keep Henry occupied.

“If His Highness has time, I would love to showcase my jewels for him.” He said hopefully.

“Perhaps, it will be up to his highness.” Coming to an end Henry seemed to let the matter rest and moved on to speak with another male.

Edmund made his way around the room socializing in Caspian’s place as he could tell his brother was in no mood to converse with most of the diplomats.

A look passed between Luca and Gabe that had Caspian raising an eyebrow. Luca let out a breath and walked over to where Caspian standing.

Luca bowed before he began “I do believe the news is about to come out so it’s better I state it now before there are any misunderstandings.”

“Alright, go ahead.” The king permitted as he looked at him quizzically.

“Abi is with child and it seems she may have alarmed the females with her nausea.”

“That's wonderful news, Congratulations!” Caspian genuinely smiled at his brother-in-law.

“What? You didn’t tell me!” Alpha Jacob cut in to question his son.

“There’s been a lot happening here recently and the time did not seem right.” He replied shyly but a smile of pride was blooming across his lips.

“Let us raise a glass!” Gabe began “To the future of Silver Pack!”

“Congratulations!” The room cheered. Some were happy for the future alpha and others with forced smiles. Many hoped for the demise of the Silver Pack as they were powerful.

The topics of conversations switched to the future of the Silver Pack with an heir on the way.

Caspian conversed with his in-laws for a while and refilled his glass and theirs in celebration.

Alpha Dennis sauntered over to the group “Your Majesty.” He bowed before turning to Luca “May I offer my congratulations on the happy news.”

“How kind of you alpha Dennis.”

“I wish I had known when you were visiting my pack so we could have thrown you a celebration.”

“There is no need, we were on a tight schedule.”

“What a shame…” He sighed “Anyway make sure you take good care of your little mate. She must deliver a healthy heir. I know when my darling Delilah has her children, I’ll make sure she has everything she needs but I doubt she will need any help. She’s so strong and healthy.”

No response was offered instead he was met with stares void of emotion.

“I seem to have gotten carried away, silly me! If you’ll excuse me I’ve been meaning to speak with Alpha Tinzen.” With a sleazy smile, Alpha Dennis stalked his next target.

Edmund linked his brother as the alpha walked away. *I’ve got two hands and a shovel. I doubt anyone would miss him*

*It will create more problems than it will solve unfortunately* Caspian responded tempted by the idea.

Luca and Edmund had nothing pressing to report to the king about their time in Alpha Dennis’s territory but they would give him a detailed account later.

Caspian dreamed of the day he could get rid of the alpha as he had wormed his way into a position of power during his father's reign. When he took the throne there was too much chaos to worry about Alpha Dennis and he was too naive to see the problems he supplied.

It did not help that his daughter had deployed similar tactics and by the time he realized what had happened, he almost lost his mate. It scared him to think they may have never known what it was to wake up next to her.

Before her, he did not understand what love meant. He saw the mating bond as a contract but when her scent hit him, he knew that was not the case. His life changed that day to revolve around her and he would do whatever it took to remove threats to her. One way or another.
