Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 149: Live for Yourself
Enzo had to get out of the study. He felt like he had been laid bare before them all. Stepping outside he took deep breaths in the night air trying to calm himself. He thought about what his day had been.
All day had been chaos. When the explosion happened he wanted to grab Cynthia and run to safety but he had to fight his instincts and stay.
He protected the queen and got them all back safely but it was not without its challenges. It was a miracle he did not lose his mind.
Once they entered the gates of the palace they were safe. The king immediately took the queen away leaving Enzo standing with Marissa, Gabe, and Cynthia.
Gabe had a rare moment where he did not care about his duties and focused solely on his mate. He slipped away with her for a moment alone leaving Cynthia and Enzo.
It was silent as they stood alone in the entryway. They did not look at each other as they awkwardly let the silence stretch on. “I should go see my brother. I’m surprised he is not here waiting.” Cynthia said looking at the ground with her arms wrapped around herself.
With so many guards around, Enzo had to choose his words wisely. “Allow me to escort you. It may not be safe to move about the place alone.” It wasn’t a lie but more an embellishment that Enzo utilized.
Cynthia looked nervous. “Very well.”
Enzo gestured for her to lead the way. They walked in silence as he struggled to find something to talk about. His palms were sweaty as he slyly wiped them on his pants.
Looking down he noticed he was filthy. Cynthia had some dirt and a grin on her but to him, she looked like an angel.
The sky was gloomy but she shined through like a beacon that he gladly followed. Every step put them closer to parting ways.
As they walked in silence Enzo started to panic. What if the Eastern Kingdom returned to their home? There was much for them to discuss and work through.
Up ahead was an alcove that he could slip them into and no one would be able to see them. So he did it.
Slipping his arm through hers she pulled her away from any prying eyes putting her back against the wall and shielding her with his body.
“What are you doing?” She hissed in surprise.
“We need to talk.”
“Now?!” She claimed before quickly covering her mouth and her eyes darting around.
“Yes now. You can’t go back till we figure this out.” He said his hands on either side of his head looking down at her.
“It’s been a stressful day and now you want to make a life-changing decision.” She brought her hands to her hair as if she were to pull it out.
“I want you to choose a life with me.” He said gently seeing her frustration.
“You say that like I have a choice.” She scoffed looking at him as she crossed her arms.
“You do have a choice.” He pressed his eyes bore into her soul.
“What choice is that?” She could not keep eye contact and looked away from his intense gaze.
“To live.” He told her. “For yourself.”
She sighed. Her eyes held pain and sadness as she looked up at him. Her lip quivered as if she was going to cry.
Before she could tell him no, he brought his lips to hers. Immediately she melted into him without hesitation. Her hands wrapped around his neck pulling him closer causing him to stumble and almost lose his balance.
Bringing his arms down he wrapped them around her waist. They entwined themselves forgetting the time. The breaths came rapidly as they eagerly kissed one another.
“I’ll ask the king for his blessing.” Enzo’s raspy voice said.
“You would do that?” She asked surprised.
“Yes, just say yes.” He begged. If she said gave the word he would grovel on his hands and knees to the king if that’s what it took.
She hesitated and Enzo could not take a rejection so he kissed her.
Footsteps echoed in the hall causing them to break apart. Enzo pushed her against the wall making sure they were not seen.
As the footsteps faded, Enzo surveyed the two of them. They were a mess. Luckily they had a cover story. Cynthia’s face was flush as she steadied her breathing.
“We should go.” She breathed.
Enzo nodded then quickly pecked her lips. “I’ll come for you.”
She could only stare as he stuck his head around the corner to see if the coast was clear. He motioned with his hand for her to follow and then slowly slipped out of the alcove.
Quickly they arrived at the eastern kingdom wing. Enzo hung back as Cynthia walked to her door. He waited till she disappeared then made his exit.
He was at his chambers in no time. In amongst the smoke and grime, he could faintly smell her lingering on him.
It saddened him to see her scent off but he had to shower and prepare to meet the royal couple. He did not bother to look in the mirror as he dressed.
Caspian was sure to be furious if they were not back sooner. He took a deep breath as he walked to the study. Hopefully, the queen would help calm him.
He had no such luck. It was worse than he thought so here he was standing in the night air trying to steady himself.
It felt pathetic. He was out of control and did not know what to do. He walked the grounds passing guards as he went but paying them no mind. They knew better than to question him.
There was a faint glow from a window that he found himself staring at. Then he realized it was her window and his mood improved at the thought. The curtains were drawn and the window shut but a little bit of light was peeking through.
It was on the second floor not allowing him to go up and knock on it.
Reaching down he scooped up a few small pebbles. Tick. The first one hit the glass. Tick. The second. Tick the third. As he reared back through the fourth he saw the curtains moving.
He saw a head peeping around the curtain and a smile spread across his face before he could stop it.
The glass was raised and Cynthia stuck her head out resting her folded arms on the windowseal. “You’re mad.” She said.
“I’m getting there.” He agreed.
The wind gently blew her hair away from her face. Wrapped in a robe she looked down on him.
“Did I wake you?” He asked just needing to hear her voice more.
“No, I was finishing some things before bed. Is it safe for you to be out there?” She looked out into the night.
Enzo laughed at the preposterous notion. “I’m perfectly safe.” Her worry touched him.
“How is everyone?” She asked thinking about everything she had witnessed.
“The reports are good. The situation is under control. Prince Dristan should have been given a report from Beta Gabe.” He told her trying to calm her nerves but not divulge anything he could not.
“I don’t think the prince was involved.” She said wringing her hands together.
“Nor do I.” He soothingly. Her worry was evident.
She relaxed. “Good.”
“Was anyone upset with you?” He worried her brother or the prince would be upset with her for being in the middle of the disaster.
“They were too busy to care. The perks of being invisible.” She shrugged.
It was a sentiment he understood. It was nice to slip into the shadows away from attention it was when the spotlight was on him that he became nervous. Like tonight in the study.
“We’re playing with fire.” She interrupted his thoughts.
He wanted to say he would walk through it for her but regained as he didn’t want to press her as for the first time she seemed relaxed in presence maybe even happy.
“Let down your hair.” He teased changing the subject.
She laughed “I don’t think it’s long enough.”
“I can climb.” He said gesturing to the wall.
“Don’t you dare?” She eyed him suspiciously but looked as if she may want him to. It was a nice moment between them. A male courting a female, the way it should have been had they not been given a cavern to overcome.
“And why not?” He was pushing his luck of being seen but he did not care.
“I don’t want to have to give you for when you fall.” She searched for an excuse.
He didn’t believe her but did not wish to ruin their moment. “Then my lady I bid you adieu.” He said with a bow.
“Goodnight Gamma Enzo.” She said with a smile before closing the window and then the curtains.
“Sweet Dreams Cynthia.” He whispered in the night air.
