The White Wolf Chapter 109: The Fire in His Eyes

The reception ended with guests leaving to find their respective chambers. Even after everyone had dispersed. Enzo stayed awake standing in front of the fireplace.

The embers popped occasionally as it kept its steady roar. Every so often a new log would be added to give it new life. The carvings along the marble mantle were works of art but that didn’t matter.

His shirt was unbuttoned and his tie was in disarray. He stood there holding a glass in his hand, staring but not seeing it. All he could see was her.

He had delivered the crown to the king and commissioned and then promptly went to the reception. The game of hiding from Gabe came to an end when he entered knowing he could no longer avoid him.

Facing it head-on he walked right to him to receive his orders. There were so many new scents and voices in the room it was overpowering trying to distinguish them all.

“There you are,” Gabe said dryly at his approach.

“I was on an errand for the king.” He shrugged.

“All day?” Gabe quirked a doubtful eyebrow.

“It was very strenuous.” He did his bedside to try and sound sincere.

“Very well, you’re here now. Most of the alphas have arrived and the ones that haven’t are en route. We are just waiting for Prince Dristan and his entourage.” A sight escaped as if he was already done dealing with the prince.

“What do you need me to do?” He looked at his tired friend.

“Check in with security, and let me know the minute anything that looks suspicious happens.”

Enzo left to speak with the guards. As expected, everything was running smoothly. He knew the errand was pointless but it gave Gabe peace of mind and allowed him to escape before he was assigned something else.

He took his sweet time checking in with no hurry to return.

By the time he returned, the Prince had already arrived and the King and Queen were en route towards the reception. Gabe beckoned him over to meet with the future Gamma of Prince Dristan’s court.

“Enzo, this is the future gamma Greyson. Please make sure everything is set for the Prince’s stay.” Gabe said gesturing to the male next to him.

Being polite Enzo stuck out his hand for the gamma to shake who reciprocated but kept a neutral business expression.

After the introduction, they immediately began discussing the Prince’s security and protocol. While Enzo was careful not to tell any weakness or secret, he made sure the necessary information was communicated.

While they were talking, the beta came up to them.

“Gamma Enzo, this is future beta Ruhn,” Greyson informed him.

“Hello, I am sorry to interrupt but if you’re done one of the alphas we traveled with needs a word with a Gamma,” Ruhn said to them.

“I believe we covered everything and anything else we can discuss later,” Enzo told the future beta.

Greyson left to see what was needed leaving Ruhn alone with Enzo. The beta seemed polite and he exchanged pleasantries.

“I have never been to your kingdom before my father was sent as an envoy when I was young though,” Ruhn told him as if feeling the need to continue the conversation.

“How are you finding it?” Enzo asked out of politeness. He was already bored and there was something about betas that made them chatty. He preferred the company of the Gamma as they only spoke on what needed to be said.

“It is nice, my sister accompanied me but I did not see her. Perhaps I can introduce you later.” Awake the social beta.

They carried on a few more minutes, each receiving a drink. Enzo was thankful for the glass his tolerance for social politeness was waning.

A female came up behind Ruhn. “Brother, have you seen Luna Callie? I cannot seem to find her.”

“I have not.” He responded before remembering he had been speaking to Enzo but was interrupted. “I’m sorry allow me to introduce you.” He turned to the gamma.

When Ruhn stepped aside, Enzo’s world changed as he took in the female before him. Her scent hit him and he forgot how to breathe.

“Cynthia this is Gamma Enzo.” Her eyes met his and he was locked in place. He could barely manage to muster a nod. His brain was wiped clean. He forgot where he was and who he was. All that mattered was her.

It felt like hours no days had passed when she finally spoke in a soft voice. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“If you’ll excuse us I will help my sister in finding her friend,” Ruhn said as he turned away from his sister. Enzo had to restrain himself from growling at him as he wrapped an around her to guide her away. But her eyes looked back over her shoulder and he was frozen in place. He was only snapped out of his daze when they broke eye contact.

They walked away and Enzo felt as if his heart was walking away with them. He longed to follow but knew that was out of the question.

He was about to go after them when the king and queen’s arrival was announced. He watched as she was introduced to the king and queen. He found himself migrating towards her. Luckily she seemed to be near the queen so no one would question his presence.

He did his best to maintain his composure during dinner but all he wished was to hold her in his arms and claim her as his.

Stealing glances at her, he begged the goddess for her eyes to meet his but they did not. Instead, she looked anywhere else not saying much, and ate her meal. When she spoke to the queen, he wished it was him.

At the end of dinner, the males and females separated to their places of after-dinner entertainment. She was out the door before he could make a move. Hoping to accidentally just brush their arms as they walked but there was no opportunity as she was gone.

Could she be avoiding him? Did she not feel what he felt? Was he losing his mind? Was this a trick? He second-guessed everything he felt and knew.

He repeated the night's events over and over in his mind as the flames of the flicked, their burning reflected in his eyes and his heart.

Cynthia. Her name played in his head like a song. Over and over again.

There had to be a way for him to get to her. The wolf in him begged him to go straight to her chambers and claim her but he knew he could not do that. It could cause war. How could they ever be together? What had he done to the goddess to deserve this?

He let out a frustrated growl before throwing his glass on the fire. The alcohol was lapped up by the flames causing them to grow. He cursed before leaving the room unsure of what to do.
