Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 145: News From the Attack
Their steps were quick as they wasted no time making it to the study. The sounds of the chaos outside of the palace could be heard within its walls. Guards moved throughout the palace only pausing to bow to the royals before quickly continuing on their journey.
They could feel it in the air. The fear. The uncertainty. The despair. It hung in the air like a banner on a gloomy day.
When they arrived at the study, the door was already opened as Gabe, Enzo, and Judy were already there.
Judy paced the room only pausing as her son entered the room. Her hair was disheveled as if she had been running her hands throughout. Her clothes were crinkled and her face seemed to finally tell her age with her sunken eyes. The wrinkle in her face seemed to deepen with her worried expression. Gabe and Enzo wore hard expressions standing still waiting for the royal couple.
“Where’s Edmund?” Caspian asked the group as he trudged in. The door was promptly shut after them keeping their conversations safe.
“On his way,” Gabe said offering no further explanation.
Letting go of Alexia’s hand, he walked over to his desk. “How the hell did this happen?” He asked his voice straining to remain calm. Alexia stood a few paces behind him.
They were in shock at the turmoil that had been caused in their kingdom, scrambling for an explanation.
“We are still receiving information but what we can gather is it was a planned attack,” Gabe said before pulling out a map circling different spots. “These are where the bombs were set off. It was coordinated with few individuals.”
A smaller number would allow them to slip in undetected. Caspian’s head hung low.
Enzo stepped forward. “The borders have been secured now that all remains is putting out the fires and treating the wounded.”
“How many casualties?” Judy asked speaking up but her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Uncertain as of now.” Gabe sighed.
“Guess.” She said in a commanding tone as increased the sound of her voice.
“At least a hundred. Probably triple as many wounded.” Gabe confessed.
“And the children?” Alexia asked joining the conversation.
“The orphanage seemed to have the biggest blast radius but with most of the children outside the loss of lives was the smallest. We will know more once the fire is out.” Enzo told her seemingly bringing himself to the king's attention as Caspian looked at him intensely.
“I cannot fathom why it took you so long to return.” Caspian’s voice was scarily calm as his eyes stared at Enzo.
“There were injured wolves needing our help,” Enzo answered calmly trying not to anger the king.
“Your first duty is to protect your queen.” Caspian’s alpha aura radiated from him causing the nonroyals in the room to bow their heads.
“There were children.” Enzo fought back. Alexia’s head looked between the two males knowing she was at fault for the fight.
“Or have you become too concerned with that Eastern Kingdom female and have forgotten your role in this court!” Caspian slammed his hand on the desk threatening to crack the wood as he snarled at Enzo.
It was as if Enzo had been laid bare to the group. His face had a slim tint of red as his eyes were wide and mouth open in shock. It was something many had suspected almost all except Judy who could not hide her surprise. No one had spoken out yet as they were waiting for Enzo to say something first.
Alexia could no longer stand on the side and stepped between them. “Enough! It was my decision and if you want to be mad at someone be mad at me!” She let her own aura slip causing Caspian to falter only slightly as he stared at Enzo.
“He should have gotten you to safety.” He closed his eyes as he gritted his teeth not wanting his mate to see the anger that was in them.
“He tried, I decided to stay.” The queen crossed her arms defiantly.
“Next time you drag her away,” Caspian said to Enzo ignoring his mate’s statement.
“Excuse me?” Alexia cut in. Her skin burned in anger.
“Understood Your Majesty,” Enzo responded with a bow. His embarrassment had been replaced with a mask of indifference.
The door opened before Alexia could offer a rebuttable revealing Edmund. He slowly strutted inside in an unhurried fashion with wet hair. His relaxed nature was shown in his t-shirt and jeans.
“Where have you been?” Caspian demanded having been detracted with the arrival of his little brother. Edmund did not spare his brother a glance but walked to his mother.
“The front lines.” He said kissing his mother’s cheek before turning to his older brother.
“What?” Judy squawked. “Why does everybody seem to think they need to run towards danger?” She threw her hands up in exasperation.
“Well, I caught one.” Edmund shrugged, unfazed by his mother's grief. All eyes turned to the prince.
“Did they say anything?” Caspian pushed ignoring his mother.
“No. It was not an easy fight. A doctor is trying to keep them alive right now.” Edmund let the last words fall off his lips.
“Make sure it does not escape,” Caspian growled causing Edmund to roll his eyes at the obvious plan of action.
“I’ve chained them to an infirmary bed in a cell and placed guards outside,” Edmund informed him.
“Are you injured?” Judy asked her worry increasing by the moment.
“I’ve already healed from my injuries.” Edmund shot her a smile that would melt the heart of any court female but it did little to alleviate the frown on his mother’s face.
“As soon as the prisoner wakes up I want you interrogating them,” Caspian told him needing answers.
“Naturally,” Edmund said finding a tray of snacks that had been left in the study untouched and licked through them.
They carried on discussing logistics and waited as information was reported. Gabe and Enzo had several phones going trying to contact different people. Caspian and Edmund poured over the report while Judy handled the diplomats.
Alexia was in constant communication with the orphanage. On a scrap of paper, she wrote down every child’s name and if they were safe, injured, or deceased. Those that were deceased she wore their condition as well as their status.
After that, she moved on to speaking with the hospital and working on moving any resources they needed. When she came to a stalemate, she decided it was time she checked on her family.
She rose from her seat behind Caspian’s desk having taken up residence there while Caspian paced the room as he made phone calls. “I’m going to check on my family.”
“Take an escort.” Caspian paused looking at her deciding if he should join her.
“I would not advise that,” Edmund said causing the room to halt and bringing the attention to himself.
“Care to elaborate?” Caspian raised his brow.
“When I was out there, it seemed like they were trying to get to the palace. The one I caught was headed to where Luca was at. I know it’s a long shot but I think they were after the silvers.”
“But I was out of the palace, wouldn’t I have been the easier target?” Alexia asked unconvinced.
“We did spread the rumor you could not shift.” Gabe piped in, the wheels in his head turning.
“We will know more once the prisoner wakes up. Till then we should take precautions.” Enzo added.
Caspian was visibly perturbed by the revelation. On one hand, they did not attack his mate but on the other
If the attack was a way to get to the silvers, it was only a matter of time before they went after the queen.
“Stay here,” Caspian said.
A knock sounded at the door. Gabe walked over barely opening. Muffled voices spoke as Gabe was handed a stack of documents.
He shut the door and began riffling through the pages. His hands stopped moving on one page.
“What is it?” Caspian asked halfheartedly.
“You’re going to want to see this,” Gabe replied.
