The White Wolf Chapter 55: Interview Cont.

Alexia was taken aback by the statement. The others she had interviewed had been more reserved and docile in nature.

“Why do you feel you are a good fit for this role?” She asked as she was able to think of something to say.

“At my previous position, I was indispensable. They could not operate without me.” The response sent Judy’s eyebrows up in a question from her chair and Alexia fought not to look at over at her mother-in-law.

Looking over the woman in front of her, Alexia felt assured the woman was confident in her abilities.

“What compelled you to leave that position?" Alexia asked trying to get to know her better.

“I was underappreciated.” So calm. So assured. Alexia did not know if she was hearing her right. She pressed her lips into a fine line.

“We come in contact with people from all backgrounds who are both pleasant and not pleasant. How do you handle working with others who might not agree with you?" Trying to get to know Rae's personality a little better.

"I always treat others the way they treat me." Alexia became nervous as there would be many times they would need to smile and bear through it. Before she could continue, Rae cut in. "A good example would be this meeting. While I do not agree with the monarchy, I have been quite cordial."

The words had Judy shifting in her chair. By being uncomfortable or ready to pounce, Alexia could not tell, her own mouth opening and closing like a fish.

"Thank you for that." Alexia said in the most queenly way she could manage before quickly shifting the conversation into more pleasant topics and thanking Rae for coming.

Charles almost seemed to skip when he escorted her out of the room. With a shut of the door, the room grew completely still.

"I do not think that was our candidate," Alexia said into the silence.

"I do not know what that was." Judy, for once, was stunned. A rare sight to behold.

Who she would choose began to weigh on Alexia. Many men and women had come to interview for the position, each one with wonderful qualifications

“There is one more your highness,” Charles said as he refilled Alexia’s water glass before filling the queen mother's as well.

“Then let’s see them in and be done with this.” Tired and weariness beginning to fill her voice and she debated another cup of coffee or perhaps an espresso. She decided on neither and drank her water.

“Right away.” Charles returned the pitcher of water to its spot and left the room.

When the door opened Charles escorted the final candidate in. She was young by many standards but older than Alexia. Short and slightly pudgy with short brown hair. Her eyes, however, told Alexia she was very focused.

“Welcome,” Alexia said with a warm smile.

“Thank you for the opportunity, your highness.” The woman said to her with a bow as she drew near to the queen. Judy offered a small smile but went back to wherever she had been concentrating on.

Charles handed the queen her resume. Alexia’s eyes scanned the page.

“Harley? Is it?” Alexia asked making sure she got her name right.

“Yes, your highness.”

“Interesting resume you have here.” Looking at every word. “Tell me, how do you think your past experiences have prepared you for this role.” Alexia looked her in the eye with a level head.

“In several of my past positions, I’ve had to be very flexible. A situation will arise that would cause the entire schedule to be shifted and readjusted.” Her voice was calm but heard.

“Good, we have very busy schedules that are constantly changing. What is it about this position that made you want to apply?” The queen pressed.

“To be on the front row of history and help make a difference in whatever way I can,” Harley told her, an answer that Alexia had not heard yet. She was impressed.

They continued to converse about Harley’s background. Alexia did her best to keep a neutral tone but the more she go to know her the more at ease she became. She was just a few years older than Alexia but did not come off as a paternal figure as some of the other candidates had instead felt more like a sibling.

"We will be in touch." Alexia said as the conversation came to a natural close.

"Thank you for your consideration," Harley said as she bowed to the queen before following Charles out of the room.

“It seems my younger son has decided to give his honest opinion of the elder alpha. A little too honest perhaps.” Pointed annoyed words.

“Well, that was brave.”

“Brave. Dumb. It’s a toss-up.” Judy said flatly. “Charles-“

“I’ve already sent the alpha’s mate an invitation to find with you at luncheon tomorrow.” The secretary always predicting what she would need.

“Very good.” Pleased with the action he took not but not looking forward to playing nice with the mate.

“Should I accompany you? Is it serious?” Already on edge from the problems facing the kingdom, she was scared of another threat they could be facing.

Judy patted her leg “You will have plenty of time to make nice with people my offspring offends. I’ll handle this one.”

“I think I’m going to hire Harley. She seemed the best fit.” Alexia told her as they stood up getting ready to go about their other tasks.

“I concur.” Judy agreed. “Consider your first task as queen complete.”

“You did this on purpose as a way to teach me.” Alexia put together what she had done.

A shrug in confirmation. “It was good for you to practice. Learn how to get to know people and feel them out.”

“There is a lot of work to be done.” Alexia said with a sigh.

“The work is just beginning,” Judy said with a wide smile.
