Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 154: Hearing Voices
Caspian walked straight to Alexia placing his hand on her shoulder. She came up and intertwined with his solidarity. He turned his attention to the lackey. “What were you saying?” His voice was low and calm.
Fear quickly swept across his face and his eyes darted to Alpha Dennis as if begging him to intervene. Aloha Dennis however looked away as if he were bored with the conversation.
“Alpha Marshal, I missed what you were saying. Please repeat it.” Caspian dared him to repeat what he had said in his presence.
“Y-Your majesty it’s just t-there are some concerns as to the safety of the kingdom.” A bead of sweat broke from his brow and ran down his face.
“Some concerns? From who?” The king did not let up.
“Just whispers I’ve heard.” He looked around hoping something anything would save him.
“Who whispered? Was it the walls?”Caspian gestured to the ornate walls of the great hall decorated in tapestries and priceless works of art.
“I do not know your grace.” Only a meteor could help him.
“You heard things but not from who. Huh. How peculiar. If any of you are the whispers please raise your hand.” Caspian looked around as the group lowered their heads and diverted their eyes.
The king continued. “Well, it seems no one here claims to have shared that sentiment. Perhaps you should visit a doctor if you're hearing voices.”
“Yes, your grace.” His head bowed he accepted the humiliation.
Caspian turned back to the group his eyes narrowing on each individual. The group instinctively leaned away under his gaze.
“Are there any more questions?” Caspian asked in a scarily sweet tone. Seconds ticked by, and no one spoke up, and the tension grew the longer the silence held. Finally, Caspian broke it. “If there are no more questions, I will call this meeting over. If you think of any questions, you may submit them to beta Gabe.”
He stepped aside without letting go of Alexia’s hand allowing her to rise to her feet. Gracefully, she rose from her seat. As she did the alphas and lunas rose in respect bowing their head to the queen.
The royal couple left the great hall with Enzo and Gabe following behind them. Their family would stay behind to monitor the behavior of the alphas.
Caspian pulled Alexia into his side as they walked bringing his head to her hair and breathing in her scent. “That idiot brother of mine.”
“What do you mean?” she asked confused
“You’ve been to the dungeons.” He said matter of factly.
“How did you know?” She turned her head to look at him. His ability to tell she had been there and who had taken her left her stunned.
“I can smell it on you,” Caspian said causing Alexia to close her mouth as she contemplated how the smell still lingered on her even after changing.
Alexia looked over her shoulder at Enzo who offered no support. They walked in silence through the halls to the king's study
The doors were opened for them. Caspian squeezed Alexia’s hand before letting it go as they entered. The feeling brought Alexia’s attention to his hand. Her eyes looked down and saw red dots along the sleeve of his tailored shirt.
“That’s blood. Are you hurt?” She asked in alarm.
Caspian gave her an unimpressed look “It's not mine. You threaten my pride by saying such things.”
“Well at least let me send for a new shirt.” She crossed her arms looking at him.
“If it makes you happy I will change.” He replied.
Alexia immediately sent Harley to fetch a fresh shirt. Caspian had barely begun reading reports by the time she returned. Alexia sent her off again before Caspian undressed and put on the new shirt. The Queen diverted her eyes not wanting an arousal caused by her mate's chiseled chest and arms.
“Whose blood was it?” Alexia asked as she set the old shirt aside.
“The prisoners.” He said flatly not bothering to meet her worried eyes.
“Was he combative? He did not want to answer any of Edmund’s questions.” She said carefully.
“Not anymore.” He shrugged offering her no explanation or elaboration.
“What did he say?” She asked taking a seat near Caspian’s desk.
“I would like to add he is no longer in a position to speak,” Gabe interjected looking up from his phone.
“Is he alive?” She asked wearily. They needed him alive till they got answers.
“That he is. I do imagine he will be more agreeable once he wakes again.” Gabe said more upbeat than his previous statement as if he were delivering good news.
“Should I be worried about Alpha Marshall?” Alexia asked worried at the blatant disrespect that had been shown to her in front of the alphas.
“Marshall? No. He’s a minor player in the game.” Gabe answered her.
“Then why would he do such a thing?” Her voice raised as her fists clenched.
“Because he was acting on Alpha Dennis’s behalf.” Caspian filled her in.
“Is Dennis making a move?” She asked realizing Caspian knew much more than she was aware and more than he let on.
“Dennis is always making a move.” It was an assumption that served him well.
“So Marshall gets to publicly disrespect and get off scot-free,” Alexia said mad.
Caspian stopped writing and put down his pen. “He’s not going unpunished. I’m sure your father is taking care of it as well speak.”
“My father?”
“He asked if he could teach Marshall some manners and decorum.” The relaxed manner and calm tone told Alexia that it was not going to be taught gently. She knew her father needed an outlet to let out some steam as a tense alpha was bound to blow eventually.
Alexia seemed satisfied with Caspian’s answer and allowed him to return to his work.
While away Caspian had only been told the bare minimum of the reports and was finally able to read them. Enzo and Gabe immediately caught up on any work they had missed.
They went in and out of the office as Alexia received updates on the children.
“I should probably tell you what I did,” Alexia said remembering her morning.
Caspian stopped writing and looked up from his desk with concern. “What did you do?”
“I’m moving the orphanage children to the hunting cottage on the palace grounds.”
Caspian immediately relaxed. “Oh. That’s a great idea. Do you need any assistance?”
“No. I’ve mobilized the housekeeping department as well as the groundskeepers to prepare it. Your mother also donated some of your toys to the cause.”
“Great. Most of those weren’t even used.” Caspian said half interested as he had bigger matters to concern himself with than old toys that he did not care about.
With Caspian approving her plan, Alexia thought it was time to check on the progress of the hunting cottage. “I’m off to the hunting cottage.” She announced standing to her feet and kissing Caspian on the cheek.
Enzo put down his stack of papers and moved to follow the queen but stopped in his tracks when he heard the king’s voice. “Gabe will accompany you. Enzo and I have things to discuss.”
