Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 40: The End of the Night
She did not have to search long for a drink.
A waiter passed carrying a tray of champagne flutes filled with bubbles. Quickly, she retrieved one. Downing the contents in seconds, she placed the empty glass on a nearby table.
Taking a deep breath, she braced herself for the small talk she was about to endure.
Smiling, she entered the ballroom. Her presence was immediately noticed. People turned their heads to her bowing.
“Thank You” she said with a smile as she passed through the sea of bodies that moved for her.
Hazel and Tabatha immediately came to flank either side of her. Tabatha smiled to the passing crowd while Hazel could not help but show her true emotions on her face. No matter if she liked or disliked the person.
“While you were gone, several pairs found their mates. No one important though.” Hazel reported to her in whisper so only their trio could hear her voice.
Alexia kept smiling as they went through the crowd, listening to Hazel but not saying anything.
“Oh! And there was this girl who was walking and some guy stepped on her dress and it split down the back! I would be mortified completely beyond repair!” Hazel said with second hand embarrassment.
“I would watch out for that group in the far right corner.” Hazel continued. “They looked quite unhappy while you were announced, so I’ve been keeping an eye on them.”
“Let them be.” Alexia cut in. “It’s the ones smiling that we need to concern ourselves with.” She told her friend.
“Hazel, Grant is coming.” Tabatha quickly whispered as the arrogant alpha approached their group.
“Your majesty.” Grant drawled trying to kiss up to the Queen.
“Come to kiss the ring?” Hazel questioned in a tone that showed all of her feelings about him.
“Of course, with a queen so lovely as this.” Grant answered with a bow as he ignored Hazel’s tone.
Alexia’s raised an eyebrow in surprise to him. “How kind of you.” She said skeptically.
“And if there is anything I can do to help the King and Queen, I pray you let me know.” He said in fake sincerity.
“What do-“ Hazel started before Alexia put her hand up to silence her friend.
“Actually, come to think of it, there is one thing that Caspian and I were just discussing.” She said softly.
“What is it!? I would do anything for the good of the crown.” He said proudly.
“No I couldn’t ask that of you , it’s too much.” She said causing Grant to protest more.
“No, no it would give me great pleasure.” He assured her.
“Well, if you insist.” The Queen said hesitantly.
“Yes! I do!” He said like an eager puppy ready to please.
“It requires a great deal of leadership skills as well as a high level of thinking.” She began.
He nodded earnestly in the response “Anything to help the King.”
“Wonderful. The Children’s play is in desperate need of a director. I will see that beta Gabriel makes the arrangements first thing In the morning. The children are lucky to have you!” Alexia beamed.
Hazel smiled like a Cheshire Cat as Grant’s mouth opened and closed as his brain tried to compute.
“Um…” His head spun.
“That is alright, yes?” Alexia questioned with the tilt of her head.
“Y-yes” he stammered before bowing and taking his leave.
“That was fun.” Hazel said as they watched Grant walk away.
“And ladies that is how you get someone’s nose out of your rear end.” Alexia told the girls.
“Let’s do it again sometime.” Tabatha said amused with a slight smile before continuing. “You looked like something was bothering you when you came back.”
“I am getting tired of that she devil wasting oxygen.” Alexia said coldly.
“Again?” Hazel questioned. “Damn, does she have a death wish?”
“Well, you can say the first blood has been drawn but more will spill when I’m done with her.” Alexia stated as she looked ahead looking into the crowd.
“Anything you need, we’re here for you.” Tabatha said trying to soothe her friend.
“She’s right. If you need someone to talk to, a snack, or even bury a body. We’ve got you.” Hazel added causing the group to let a chuckle.
“Thank you, but I think it’s time I found my mate and retired for the evening.” She said in sincerity.
She searched out Caspian in the crowd. She could always tell where he was as if there was an invisible string pulling her to him.
He was engaged in conversation and by the way kept taking sips of his drink, she could tell he was bored.
As she approached she heard the sounds of his conversation. An alpha was telling the king about his wonderful family history and seemed to think Caspian would find it invigorating. The alpha continued to animatedly describe how his ancestors fought the vampires many years ago.
Caspian sensed her approach and waited for a break in the conversation to excuse himself.
“Gentlemen, as much as I am enjoying this invigorating conversation, I must bid you all farewell for the night as I have other matters to intend to.” The king announced causing them group to bow and dismiss as Alexia reached her mate.
He held his arm out to her and she immediately wrapped hers through it.
“I’m ready to retire.” She whispered to him.
He swiftly responded with “As you wish.”
Caspian linked to Gabe to have their departure announced.
Trumpets blasted causing the music and conversation to cease.
An attendant dressed in finery stepped forward. “The King and Queen shall retire.”
At his announcement, the crowd bent together into a deep bow. As they rose, Caspian and Alexia began to exit the ballroom together.
The music did not start again till they cleared again. The merriment would continue well into the night without ceasing till dawn. Tomorrow morning servants would be ushering the guests to their beds as the sun began to rise. At least those that could walk.
“Did you enjoy your evening?” Caspian asked his mate as they made their way through the palace to their private quarters.
“I did. That is except for your old flame deciding to stop and say hello. Twice.” Alexia said flatly as they walked through the doors into their bedroom.
Caspian began to sweat as he took his jacket off. “Again. I will personally make sure you are not put into that situation ever again.” With determination he tried to offer her some assurance.
“Don’t bother, I already took care of it.” Alexia said with a wave of her hand dismissively. “Or at least for now.”
Caspian’s eyebrows shot up in surprise and he stopped what he was doing. “Is that so?” He questioned.
“A carnation will never be a rose, but I will still rip it out by the roots.” Alexia said as anger crossed her face.
