The White Wolf Chapter 38: Many Concerned

Caspian continued conversing with guests as Alexia spoke with her family. He could not help but still glance at her. Anxious by her bad mood. 

“I’m waiting for Alexia to beat the she devil to a pulp.” Gabe told Caspian placing a tart into his mouth, in between people coming to greet the king. 

“That won’t happen.” Caspian said flatly, nodding to guests as they walked by. 

“Why not?” Gabe asked with a quizzical look. “It’s not like she can hang with Alexia. Hell, I don't know if I can.”

“That’s exactly why there won’t be a fight.” Caspian said annoyed. “And I hope that’s not the case, perhaps I’ve been too lenient in training.” He turned to him and gave him a pointed look for emphasis.  

“The secret will come out, Cas. You can’t keep it quiet.” Gabe told him in a hushed voice. 

“Yes I can.” He said in a low voice full of determination. 

“She’s not one to sit on the sidelines. You can’t-“. Gabriel said passionately before the king cut in. 

“Enough.” Caspian cut in with bite, wanting to end the conversation. 

Gabe bowed before leaving him to cool off, not wanting to be caught in the crossfire of the King's bad mood.

Over time, Caspian found that alphas had congregated around him to discuss the recent rogue attacks as the night drew on. Each curious to hear what the king had to say about it.

“We have been seeing an increase in attacks lately.” One alpha said, in a serious voice, causing others in the group to nod in agreement. Murmers echoed across the circle.

“Is it vampires?” A skeptical alpha asked thinking of the wars the wolves had had with them in the past. 

“I heard Eagle Eye was hit, and suffered many casualties.” Another added. 

“Yes, we are seeing an increase in rogue.” Caspian began, confirming their suspicions. “Which is why I will be holding a meeting of the alphas tomorrow to discuss new developments that are occurring.” He told them to give them some reassurance. 

They alphas nodded in agreement. Visibly relaxing at the sound of the King's words. Except one young alpha tried to continue the conversation. “What new developments are there?” He questioned wanting more information.

Caspian answered with a bite to his voice “You will find out tomorrow at the meeting.” He said, giving him a look to silence him, as if he were a governess reprimanding a child. 

“Anyway” Caspian continued. “Tonight is about celebration, enjoy yourselves.” He said taking a drink. The group followed suit and dispersed to go socialize. Caspian was happy to be rid of the endless questions that threatened to give him a headache.

The orchestra continued to play as the guests mingled and enjoyed each other’s company. 

The dance floor was filled with people dancing happily. Laughter and conversation filling the air. 

The food was devoured so quickly the servants were finding it hard to replenish the tables and trays before they ran out again.

He gave his mate space to cool off but he admired her from afar. She was doing splendidly as Queen, his heart swelling with pride at the sight. 

Gabe approached cautiously. “So am I in charge of handling the she devil now?“ he asked.

“I don’t want to think about that or how mad Alexia is at me.”  He said, rubbing his forehead, afraid that thought might actually give him a headache.

“What I need to know” He switched the subject “Is if we have gleaned anymore information from the captured rogues?” He asked his beta. 

“Oh right, either that one rogue is singing like a canary or completely playing us.” Gabe reported to him. 

Caspian nodded. “Tomorrow we will meet with the alphas to discuss what is happening.” 

“What do you need me to do?” Gabe asked, ready to help. 

Before Caspian could respond he saw his mother making her way to him. The crowd made a path straight to him for her. Everyone giving her space due to either their respect or fear of her. Gabe saw her as well and swiftly disappeared like a whisper in the wind. 

Caspian’s mother approached him. Not even bothering to bow. “My son, you have been blessed with a wonderful mate. Even if you were cruel to your poor old dear mother.” She said in a sad voice. 

“Please mother, you are anything but poor and old.” He said in a doubtful voice giving her a pointed look. 

“True.” She agreed. “But you still shouldn’t make me have to wring information out of your brother like a wet rag.” She scolded him. 

“Hey it’s good for him! It gives him practice in case he is ever captured and interrogated by a crazy person.” Caspian joked.

“Ha. Ha.” Judy responded unamused. “Speaking of my other offspring, have you seen him?” She asked. 

“No, but I have no doubt you will smoke him out of wherever he’s hiding.” Caspian said not wanting to know what his mother was up to. 

“Huh. He’s getting better at avoiding me.” She said, clicking her tongue with a far off look. 

They were quiet for a few minutes before Judy interspersed the silence. “Oh! I remember now why I came over here! Why is alpha Denise still around? I hated him when he weaseled his way into your father’s court and now he’s here in yours. You must not trust him.” Caspian's mother advised him. 

“I know. But the old bastard is tricky and I have to be careful or it could cause an uproar.” Caspian told his mother. 

“Don’t wait too long or he will sink his hooks in.” She said seriously to him. 

Nodding in agreement Caspian said “I know but I have bigger problems right now.” 

Confused, his mother looked at him as she asked. “What’s the problem?” 

“Something is coming and I hope I am wrong about what’s coming.” Caspian said in a grim voice
