The White Wolf Chapter 36: Congratulations to the Happy Couple
The crowd stood in shook filled with a mixture of faces. Some surprised. Some disappointed. Some took a step back in slight fear.
The sea of faces seemed never ending with their gawking at her.
The alphas were dressed in perfectly tailored tuxes and their lunas wore expensive gowns of every color. Along with tons of jewelry adorning their bodies, each woman wanting to stand out from the crowd.
Some were bold with their plunging necklines and high slits while others went for more traditional and refined looks but none could compete with Alexia.
She had a timeless beauty about her in her ballgown with her hair braided and then swept into an updo giving her tiara a place to rest.
Those who knew her immediately told the ones who didn’t. They all knew the name Silver, her families reputation of excellence preceding her.
Alexia looked straight ahead, holding her chin high. From the corner of her eye she saw Luca with his mate by his side. The sight of her brother helped relieve some of her nerves.
They made their way through the ballroom to where their thrones sat. Caspian did not wear a crown that evening since he wanted it to be about Alexia but opted to display some medals as well as sash across his middle.
Everything seemed to shine.
When they arrived at the thrones they climbed the steps and then turned standing in front of the quite ornate thrones. Each throne possessed a plush upholstered seat and back that had a red velvet covering it with the rest of the chair having intricate wood work done and then covered in gold leaf.
As they stood in front of the thrones they separated their arms.
The crowd lowered itself into a bow raiding only when the king spoke.
Caspian said with a look of pride in his eyes “Thank you all for joining us hear tonight on this very special occasion. And it is with great pleasure I introduce you to our queen, Queen Alexia!”
The crowd clapped and cheered. Even if someone was not happy, they would dare not show it.
Caspian continued “So, tonight we toast” he paused to take a glass of champagne from a waiting servant and giving it to Alexia before he retrieved one for himself. “We toast our long awaited queen.”
Applause echoed throughout the ball room Caspian held the champagne flute up to the crowd. The crowd responded by holding up their own glasses. As Caspian brought his glass to his lips, they did the same.
“Long live the queen!” The crowd chanted.
“Let the celebration begin!” Caspian spoke loudly causing the orchestra to take up their instruments and begin playing. The crowd resumed their chatter filling the space.
The king and queen looked at each other with the heat of the gaze of the crowd weighing on them. The curious crowd was wise enough to give the royals a wide girth.
Alexia’s friends had gathered near the bottom of thrones waiting to descend upon her.
Making their way into the crowd they were greeted by bows and curtesies. Alexia tilted her head in acknowledgment.
Introduced to so many people, Alexia could not remember the many names she was told. All wishing to pay their respects.
Alexia politely nodded as older wolves told her about their time with her parents or remembering her as a child. Her face felt stiff from the constant smiling.
“Your portrait will be so lovely hanging in the gallery.” A Luna told her.
“I fought along side your grandfather.” An elderly alpha said.
Enzo kept watch over her at a safe distance.
Caspian was whisked into conversation with Alphas and lunas offering their congratulations. After talking numerous conversations with the alphas and lunas, Alexia slipped away.
Letting out a breath, Alexia turned to her friends as they approached.
“Your majesty” they said bowing, smiles spreading across their faces.
“Everything is amazing!” Hazel beamed.
“What is this food called and do I want to know what it is?” Chris said putting a treat into his mouth.
Smiling Alexia said “That would be goat cheese bruschetta.” Then finished off her glass of champagne.
“Yum” Thomas added popping one in his mouth.
“I’ve been so good about freaking out over the ball! I’ve been SO calm!” Hazel reported to Alexia causing Chris to cough up his food.
“Don’t do that while I’m eating!” he said with a red face. “I had to pick between two of the exact same dresses” he added exasperated.
“They we’re not the same!” Hazel defended herself.
“We are not about to get into this again” Tabatha said already having witnessed their squabble.
“You survived ball planning!” Edmond said cutting into the conversation as he handed Alexia a fresh glass of champagne. “You will need this” he added seriously looking at her.
Gabe approached the queen quietly. “Your highness, the king has asked for you to preform the opening dance with him.”
Alexia straightened visibly worried “In front of everyone?”
“You will be splendid, The first dance I did with my mate I stepped on her dress and the back ripped open. Caspian is a much better dancer than I.” Gabe said trying to reassure the queen.
Looking at him confused Alexia asked, surprised “You have a mate?”
“Don’t sound so surprised.” Burrowing his eyebrows he responded.
“Is she here? What’s her name?” Alexi- questioned.
“Yes and Marissa” Gabe answered the queen’s questioned. “Are you ready to dance?”
“Yes, lead the way” Alexia said.
The crowd parted as Alexia made her way back to her mate.
Caspian greeted her with a smile. “Shall we?” He asked taking her hand leading her to the center of the ballroom. As they moved into position the orchestra began their playing. The violins taking the lead it was as if birds were singing for the couple dancing beautiful around the room.
After the first verse others joined in the merriment. When the song met it’s end, laughter and applause filled the ballroom.
Caspian and Alexia starring lovingly at each other.
The peace was interrupted as a brave older alpha approached. Alexia could only describe his appearance as a shrew. A long droopy nose with tiny eyes on each side. His greying hair was slicked back covering a bald spot.
“Your majesty” he said as he made a show of bowing to the king.
Alexia did not recognize this alpha. There were many and few she knew. A problem Caspian’s mother and her mother were trying to rectify in their lessons.
She noted how rigid and formal Caspian regarded the alpha.
“Alpha Denise” Caspian said acknowledging him.
“It was such a surprise and a pleasure to hear you had at last found your mate.” Alpha Denise said with a smile that did not reach his eyes.
“Thank you for you kind words.” Caspian said in a diplomatic voice.
Alpha Denise then added “ I believe my daughter would also like to give her congratulations” he said looking around for her “ Ah here she comes, Delilah over here.”
Making her way towards them was the woman who Alexia loathed more than any other.
