Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 130: Either Crazy or Right
The words hung in the air.
“Should I brace myself?” Alexia asked narrowing her eyes in question.
“No, but I would prefer the sharp objects to be out of reach.” His attempt at a joke fell flat as Alexia’s face showed no signs of changing.
“That is not a comforting statement.” Alexia rose from the comfort of their bed and walked across the room to Caspian’s bar. A priceless crystal decanter held amber liquid inside with matching crystal glasses next to it.
The calm before the storm made the king nervous. He would rather her anger rage but not knowing what she was about to do kept him on edge.
“But it is the truth. How about we start with you, my dear? Ladies first.” He said slowly watching as she poured herself a glass.
It was an unusual action for her as she was not much of a drinker.
“You seem to be avoiding the subject.” Focused on her task she did not spare him a look as she spoke.
“You are right as always love.” He said as he crossed the room ran a hand through her hair and kissed the top of her head. “I did not know you to be a whiskey drinker.”
“I’m not, I just want to make sure I’m ready if I need to throw it at you.” She said nonchalantly.
“Well then.” He choked on the words in surprise. “Why don’t you tell me what you want to talk about first.” He stepped away from her to give her space.
“You’re doing your best to distract me. Very well, I will let you get away with it.” A sigh came from her chest as she placed the glass back down.
“Then tell me, what is on your mind?” Relief briefly washed over his face as he moved towards the closet to finish undressing.
“Enzo.” Her words caused him to stop and turn mid-way to the closet and look at her quizzically.
“Enzo? I do not like other males occupying space in your head. Only I shall do that.” The irritation was evident on his face.
“Enzo and Cynthia.” She clarified.
“Who?” He cocked an eyebrow
“The betas sister.”
“Oh right. What about her? Did they have an argument? He had that incident with the beta. She could be upset.” Intrigue gone he continued to the closet where he slipped off his clothes and dressed for bed.
The squabbles between the nobility and whatever or whoever they felt had wronged them were nuisances to the king.
“I don’t think she is,” Alexia called as he disappeared into their closet.
“What do you mean?” He said once he had reemerged.
“I believe the two have developed feelings for one another and I dare say they are mates.” Her words came out carefully.
“Mates?” He pondered the word aloud.
“Yes. There’s something between them… tension maybe.”
“That could explain what has been going on with Enzo..” He thought aloud.
“He does seem like something is bothering him.” She concurred. It was as if the pieces of a puzzle were coming together.
There was a long pause as Caspian just sat there staring at Alexia.
“Well say something. I’m either crazy or right.” Alexia could not take it any longer.
“I really hope you’re wrong.” His words surprised her.
“Why would you say such a thing about your friend.” Shock evident on her face.
Caspian let out a sigh and ran his hand through his hair. “Because it will be very complicated. The eastern kingdom has different… customs.”
“She’s in an arranged mating,” Alexia told him.
A groan escaped Caspian’s lips. “That makes it even more complicated.”
“What do we do? Should we ask him about it?” There were too many questions floating around her head. As much as she wanted to she refrained from interrogating the gamma.
She was concerned and they had developed a friendship in recent days making her concerned for him. However, concern could be conflated with nosy but she was the queen. The queen is not nosy, she’s concerned for the well-being of her subjects.
“Not yet. We need to prepare for any fallout or conflict.” Caspian groaned “We’re trying to create peace, not a war.”
The task would more than likely fall on Gabe and public affairs and communication were his specialty. The poor beta would never sleep.
Alexia knew it was not her place to speak to Enzo about the matter. Even though she was the Queen, it would have to be Caspian. Enzo was a hard-trained warrior, no amount of pressure would make him crack under interrogation.
Begrudgingly, Alexia let the matter drop having done all she could by speaking to her mate. With that matter concluded, she remembered there was another topic her mate wished to discuss. She picked her glass back up, readying herself.
Alexia moved to the seating area of their chambers and looked at him, glass in hand. “Now, what is it you wished to discuss.”
“I do not wish to discuss anything but I need to inform you that Alpha Dennis has sent for his daughter.” He felt as if a bomb were about to go off as he spoke carefully. She would be upset and had every right to be. If he were in her position, he would not be able to contain himself.
The sound of glass shattering echoed throughout the room as Alexia crushed the priceless crystal in her palms.
Caspian crossed the room to her but she held up her hand to stop. Blood dripped down from the cuts on her palm. She calmly plucked shards of glass from the cut, setting them on a nearby table.
Caspian retrieved a wet towel from the bathroom and handed it to his mate who wiped away the blood. In no time the wounds were held and the only evidence left was the broken crystal.
Even with her quick healing abilities, the sight of her blood made his heart lurch. Their mating bond intertwined them so deeply that he almost felt the crystal shatter in his palm. He was so focused on watching the cuts disappear, he barely heard her speak.
“Remind me again why we cannot ban her from the palace,” Alexia said with a wave of her hand as she thought of a perfectly reasonable solution to the problem.
“Because it would make us look petty and weak in the eyes of the alphas and lunas.” They needed to maintain the regality of the crown and not sink to the level of power grabbers.
“I’m the queen. I should be able to say who can and cannot enter the palace.” Her home. Her rules.
“You are and if she steps out of line, bring the full weight of the throne on her.” His hands came on either side of her shoulders with a small squeeze as he looked her directly in the eye.
“And what about you?” She questioned him, wondering why it would be her and not him.
“I don’t plan to be in sight of her.” He released her shoulders and stood tall.
“Don’t try and talk sweet to me now.” Sarcasm dripped into her voice with a sly smile but truth be told she wanted him nowhere near her. A thought he probably knew well.
“But it’s true. I will let Gabe or Enzo handle anything that comes up.” Caspian smiled at her trying to offer some reassurance.
“I still don’t want her here.” She started letting her feelings show.
If Delilah stepped out of line or dared to question her authority, she would crush her. Show the world what a Silver Queen could do and why they should fear the name.
The vipers were already circling court and now another was coming to play in hopes of gaining power. Alexia would not let that happen.
“I know and I’m sorry to put you in this position.”
She could not hold his past against him no matter how much it bothered her. She would have to find a way to deal with it and move on. As Queen, there would always be an uncomfortable situation for her to deal with and this she could see as practice. She would become the epitome of calm and collected. She would not let her get under her skin. She couldn’t.
“Everything will be ok.” She said in a calm voice not wanting her mate to become anxious worrying about her. There were more important matters for them to be concerned with.
Caspian’s face was torn between whether he believed her or not. At last, he nodded and held out his hand for her. “It’s late, we should go to bed.”
The continuation of the conversation would only upset her more therefore Caspian ended it.
Alexia took his hand and allowed him to lead her to the comfort of their bed. With his arms wrapped around her body, she felt her worries melt away. As they lay together, it felt as if nothing could hurt them. They were unstoppable.
Under the blankets, there was peace as their eyes grew heavy, one final lingering kiss and they were fast asleep.
