Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 89: Will Do
As the morning became more busy with people, the workers who had been working on the office renovations began to arrive to continue their work.
Noticing their nervousness in the presence of the two royals, Alexia suggested they continue their conversation and Edmund’s babysitting duties over breakfast.
Even though Edmund was supposed to be keeping an eye on her, Alexia felt as if she were watching him. She had half a mind to ask him if he had brushed his teeth that morning.
With the sun up, the castle was busy. The attack left everyone on edge. The guards looked more alert than usual and the servants hurried their steps as if they were afraid someone would jump out at them.
The spread that the servants had laid upon the table was immense. Anything that could be desired for breakfast was there. The smell of fresh coffee, bacon, and bread straight from the oven was a welcoming scent like a warm embrace easing tension. Alexia could herself relax as she inhaled the aromas.
Fresh coffee was waiting at their seats as they had finished the coffee Harley had brought them.
Since Caspian was not there, Alexia took his seat at the head of the table being the highest-ranking one there. It would just be the two of them for breakfast as Caspian was already working and had been for some time.
The queen was worried about her mate going hungry until Harley informed her, that breakfast had already been delivered to the king’s study for him, the beta, and the gamma.
Over their breakfast, Edmund gave Alexia a detailed plan of his and Luca’s travel plans. He seemed to have no such qualms telling her every detail of their itinerary and the packs they would be visiting. She asked if there was anything he needed but he had decided to travel light with few warriors accompanying him.
“We will need to check on Eagle Eye and see how their recovery is doing. The training is going well but I fear their biggest problem will be the lack of manpower after suffering casualties.” She listened to every word he spoke wanting to be fully briefed on the situation.
The losses the Eagle Eye Pack had suffered were sad to her heart. Though never having been there or met their alpha, she could begin to understand the pain they were feeling but her heart was still heavy for them as she hoped they would be able to recover from the tragedy. She did not know what she should do or what she was even capable of doing to help. Going there was out of the question but surely there was some way to help. Since Edmund and Luca were going she felt secure in entrusting them to help on behalf of the crown.
She inquired further asking “Do you suspect any difficulties with alphas?”
A shrug. “Just the usual. Alpha Denise leading the charge and I’m sure there will be some hot-headed young alpha wanting to prove themselves. They’re as dependable as the sun.” Edmund avoided duties at all costs but when he could not get out of them, he took them very seriously.
Adding her input “Luca said they seemed to ignore him mostly and leave him alone.”
With a sigh, he replied “I wish. Now we have to attend dinners with them throwing their females at me. Lots of fake smiles and preying eyes.”
Noticing how he had piled his plate high with food, she surmised he did not have faith in the cooking of the packs he would visit or he did not trust their intentions as he ate as if he were planning to go without food for weeks.
Alexia laughed knowing what he said was true and he was in for a dismal time but who knew? Maybe he would find his mate. Not wanting to get his hopes up, she refrained from the topic. "Does your mother know you are leaving?"
"I am a grown man you know? I do not need permission from my mother to leave." As Alexia just stared at him he continued. "I have not informed her and I doubt my brother has so she is in for a surprise." He said with a smirk.
Alexia shook her head and decided to make a point to avoid her mother-in-law.
Turning the conversation to a new topic, Alexia asked “What do you think of Luca’s mate?”
Edmund’s fork stopped its advancement to his mouth as he looked at her seriously “What do I think of her? I really don’t, I think the question is more of What do you think of her since you’re bringing it up?”
She felt guilty admitting how she felt, picking at the muffin that was on her plate. “I don’t know if I trust her or not.”
Edmund stabbed at the last piece of his breakfast “You never know for sure who can trust.”
“How can people live like that in constant worry?” She pressed.
“That’s what makes life interesting.” He sounded like his mother in Alexia's ears.
The doors opened as he finished speaking, Enzo walked in but Alexia was in her own thoughts.
Edmund rose wiping his mouth with his napkin as he finished eating. “Ah, I see my relief is here and just at the perfect time. I need to prepare for my departure. With that, I bid you farewell.”
“Be safe and take care of Luca for me.” The words were soft as they came out of her lips.
Edmund patted her on the shoulder as he walked past and threw a smile at her before walking out the door. “Will do.”
Alexia ignored Enzo as he walked over to her side bowing. She did not bother to offer him breakfast since she knew he had already eaten.
Sensing an unease with the queen Enzo probed. “Your Majesty, I hope you well this morning.”
Feeling a little snippy, about her morning she said “I don’t know perhaps you should ask my babysitter for his report.”
Enzo grimaced. “It was not my idea to send Edmund.”
A deep sigh came from her chest. “I know who sent him but that person is not here so I cannot express my displeasure to them right now.”
Wanting to become invisible, Enzo kept his mouth shut as he waited for the queen to finish.
“So what was it about?” She said pulling her shoulders back and sitting up straight as if a crown was placed on top of her head.
“Pardon, Your Majesty?” He startled.
“The meeting. What did you have to discuss with my mate that was so urgent.” She remembered how it felt to wake up alone, wondering where he was. It fueled her annoyance and unlucky for Enzo he was on the receiving end.
The discomfort was evident on his face as he shifted his weight. “It… it is not for me to say.”
Clicking her tongue Alexia stared him down. “I guess I will need to ask Caspian myself then… is he in his study?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Enzo did not like where this was going. He had tried to reason with Caspian that the queen would be fine but he had insisted on waking Edmund anyway. Now it seemed the queen was ready to express her displeasure something that was not going to go over well.
“Then since apparently I need a shadow inside the castle, you may escort me to his study.” Her voice was commanding coming out harsher than she intended as she tossed her napkin on the table and rose as a footman quickly pulled her chair out for her.
Mumbling her thanks to the footman, she made her way to the door setting out to hunt down her mate.
