Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 68: Luca's Report
“Luca sent a message?” Alexia asked looking between the beta and the king. She sat up straight at the mention of her brother.
Ever since Luca had left, she had been worried about his safety. None of their friends accompanied him making it his first solo mission. As Caspian had said, she and her brother were kept fairly hidden at least their abilities had been.
Gabe looked to Caspian if he should continue. With a nod, Caspian permitted him to speak.
“The message states that he arrived without incident however, he cannot find Alpha Howard. He keeps requesting meetings but there’s always an excuse as to why he can’t make it. But the weird part is he can’t even find a scent trail to track him.”
“What?” Caspian asked his eyes narrowing on the beta.
“Yes, he goes on to say he decided to track him down on his own but he can’t pick up his scent.” The words from Gabe sounded impressed.
Caspian slipped into thought and then reached out his hand to receive the piece of paper. Alexia could not help but peek at it. However, her lips pursed when she realized it was written in code and she could not decipher it. The king however seemed to have no such problems.
“Huh. Did he confirm that Alpha Howard made it back?” He asked.
Alpha Howard had left at the earliest convenience, and Luca not too long behind.
Gabe confirmed the words. “Yes, alpha Howard greeted him when he arrived then left him to settle in.”
“Maybe he’s just scared of the young alpha,” Caspian smirked at the thought of the old alpha hiding from Luca who was not even 19 yet.
“The Silver name proceeds him.” Gabe echoed the sentiment.
While very few knew the extent of the twins' skill, their family's reputation was unmatched. Their warriors were amongst the strongest in the kingdom.
“What about the beta?” An empty question as he already knew the answer but needed to analyze the situation out loud as well as for Alexia’s benefit.
“It does not say,” Gabe told him.
Caspian listened as he processed what Gabe told him.
“Do you think Alpha Howard ran away?” Alexia asked skeptically chiming into the conversation.
“It’s possible, but unlikely. His power is in pack I don’t see why he would abandon it.” Caspian responded patiently.
“He is a coward though.” Gabe cut in. “All bark and no bite. Running away would be fitting with his personality.”
“If he runs away, won’t that make him look guilty?” Alexia pressed looking at Caspian.
“Intelligence has never been his strong suit,” Gabe said dryly and Caspian made a face of agreement.
“So Luca is alright?” Alexia asked mostly just wanting to hear the confirmation from someone else.
“Yes,” Caspian said squeezing her shoulders reassuringly causing her to breathe a sigh of relief.
She nodded and leaned back into his chest. The tension in her shoulders relaxed. Her thoughts drifted to her brother's mate. There was something there that she needed to get to the bottom of but how she was unsure.
"Notify Alpha Jacob, I want him to be aware of the situation, his pack is closer and can respond if something arises." As Alexia's eyes shot to him in alarm, he clarified. "Just as a precaution."
The nod that Gabe gave suggested that it was given.
Sensing the unease in his mate, Caspian kissed Alexia's temple. "No need to worry."
"Awww how cute." Gabe taunted watching Caspian's softer side.
The king in response threw daggers with his eyes at the beta, however, Alexia was too consumed in her thoughts to notice.
Sensing his work was complete Gabe said “I will take my leave unless you need something.” Caspian waved him away with his hand as if trying to dispel a pest.
The door shut after Gabe left the room. A loud sigh escaped from Alexia.
"Have you eaten?" Caspain asked hoping to take her mind off of things.
"No, I came straight here when we returned." She confessed and suddenly became aware of her hunger.
"Then let's finish up here and then we will make our way to the dining room," Caspian said and Alexia rose from her spot on his lap and took a seat in one of the other comfortable chairs in the room.
Quickly, Caspian flipped through papers and skimmed their contents till he was satisfied. Making notes on a piece of paper, he pushed it aside.
Alexia scrolled through her phone while her mate worked. Checking in with her friends as she had not been vigilant about keeping up with her correspondences.
Finishing his work, Caspian rose and reached out his hand to his mate. Swiftly she grasped his outstretched hand and wrapped her other hand around his forearm.
His muscles felt strong under her palm. She could not help but give them a slight squeeze. He looked at her out of the corner of his eyes as the corner of his lips pulled up ever so slightly.
"Should we postpone dinner?" He spoke softly to her as they exited the room.
The thoughts in her mind caused her to consider the offer for a moment but in the end, her hunger won and she mischievously shook her head no.
Caspian pretended to pout slightly before smiling and continuing on their journey.
It occurred to Alexia that she had rarely taken her meals in the dining room, preferring the safety of quarters. As they entered the room the giant table was set with plush chairs. So many chairs that Alexia did not even bother to count. Stationed along the walls were several footmen, each standing straight with perfect uniforms and pristine gloves.
"Are we dining alone?" Alexia asked as she was expecting at least one of the many castle residents to be at the table.
"No one can dine here without permission from either you or me," Caspian told her. Relief rushed through Alexia as she hated the idea of having to eat with whoever was at the palace whether she liked them or not.
Pulling out the chair to the left of the head of the table, Caspian waited for Alexia to take her seat before he pushed in the chair for her. He then claimed his place at the head of the table. Waving off the footman who had stepped forward to help him. When Caspian sat, the servants moved into action.
The wine was poured for the couple as the first course was served. Caspian insisted that Alexia always be served first and then him.
Watching her eat he smiled and wondered what thoughts fluttered through her head. They drifted into any easy dinner, basking in each other's comforting presence.
