Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 43: Stories of Old
The room was still as if the air had been sucked out of it. The smell of coffee lingered in the air.
“What?” Alexia asked her voice cracking on the word, worry in her eyes as she looked at her father.
“How is that possible?” Luca asked as well, confusion abundant on his face.
“My father told me the stories and his father before him. They were thought to be stomped out but if they’re back….” Jacob trailed off, his voice causing the others to be on edge.
“I only know enough to recognize the seal, Dad used to tell us stories when we were kids. I didn’t think they were real. I’ve been searching the library for answers.” Caspian said motioning to a pile of books on his desk.
“The history is so ancient, it may not be written down.” Jacob muttered as he stared at the books with a faraway look on his face.
“I was hoping you might be able to shed some light on the subject.” Caspian said with a shrug of his shoulders. The others gaped in shock, their heads in swivel going back and forth.
Jacob nodded his head and opened his mouth but before he could speak he was cut off.
Judy held up her hands waving them in front of her face. “Wait! Stop! I need a minute.” She said. Walking over to Caspian’s mini bar she picked up a decanter containing an amber liquid. With a pop of the top she poured her a drink into a crystal glass.
Everyone watched as the queen mother gulped down the drink in one go. With an “Ah” she sat the glass back down and reached for the decanter again. She poured another drink and recapped the decanter before placing the glass back into her hands. Turning, she looked at the group before saying “Continue.”
“Anyway” Caspian said after staring at his mother in disbelief before he continued to explain the situation. While he spoke his mother slowly sipped her drink. Edmund’s mouth opened and closed as his eyebrows scrunched together.
“The only information I have been able to glean from these books is that they existed and hunted white wolves.” Caspian continued unhappy with the information.
Jacob began. “A long, long, long time ago the white wolves ruled the werewolf kingdom. They were more common back then and there was no need for them to hide from others. The world was peaceful.“ he said informatively.
Looking at his children he said “As you know, white wolves are stronger and faster than your average wolf, making them harder to hurt. This gave them an advantage.”
Their only response was to stare back prompting him to continue.
“It was said that white wolves were not just stronger and faster but they also possessed certain abilities.” He told them.
“What abilities?” Luca asked skeptically.
“Supernatural abilities. The rumors varied in degree. My father told me that there was a King named Kovika once, he was said to be able to rain down lightening on those he wished. The stories ranged in all kinds of abilities, I cannot say for certain how truthful they were.” Jacob said.
“How is that possible?” Alexia questioned
“Legend says the moon goddess blessed them more than any other wolf since their fur was a reflection of the moon.” Jacob said halfheartedly.
“You don’t think they did?” Caspian asked from his spot.
“I mean maybe but probably unlikely, there would be more written on subject I feel like.” Jacob said with a shrug before continuing. “Whether it was true or not is not the point. The point is people feared them nonetheless. Fear drives people to do things they would not ordinarily do.”
“Like kill people.” Gabe spoke from his seat prompting a nod from Jacob.
“The slayers formed and started hunting off the white wolves slowly. It was over many years and by the time white wolves realized they were being hunted, it was too late.” The sadness was evident in his voice.
“How are Luca and I here today then?” Alexia questioned her father.
“Our ancestor was one of a handful of white wolves left. There were dozens at one point till there were only a few. He and his family escaped and formed Silver Moon. He hid his identity to allow our family to start fresh in a new place.” He answered.
“We’re there anymore white wolves born?” Alexia questioned, eager to learn more.
“Every few generations or so after that, our line would give birth to a white wolf. They were always kept a secret in order to protect them. Until…”
“Until the vampire wars.” Caspian finished.
“Alexander.” The twins said in unison, remembering their ancestor.
“Alexander.” Their father confirmed. “Alexander revealed himself when it became evident the werewolf kingdom would fall without him. There hasn’t been another white wolf born to us since until you too.”
Gabe stood up and made his way to the mini bar and poured his own drink. Turning around, he was met with pair of eyes looking back at him.
“What?” He asked. “She did it!” He continued as he motioned to the queen mother.
“Her liver is seasoned to such things.” Edmund chided.
Judy started to protest but then seemed to be in agreement. “What are you going to tell the alphas?” She asked, looking at Caspian.
“We’re going to need to approach this as wisely as we can.” He answered his mother. “We need to be on the look out and try to find out whatever information we can. I fear if this is true, some people may know. Till then we tell the alphas that rogues are becoming more bold and security will need to tightened in all packs.” Caspian finished looking at the twins.
“We need someone who we trust but can go unnoticed to see if anyone suspects.” Luca added.
“The last thing we want to do is raise suspicion by asking a lot of questions.” Gabe added.
“Someone who can get into the gossip.” Judy said from her seat sipping her drink.
“Morgan.” Alexia, Luca, and Jacob said in unison.
