Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 64: The Book
Alexia fought the urge to move in discomfort and forced herself to remain calm. From his position, Enzo could see what Alexia saw. Clenching his jaw, he fought the urge to remove the queen. His eyebrows furrowed slightly before the unfazed mask he portrayed returned to its place. Deep in her own thoughts blossom did not notice anything.
“Starting from the beginning, the ancient White wolves were thought to contain the power of the moon and were marked with their white fur. They were almost worshiped as reincarnations of the moon goddess herself. They rose to great places of power commanding respect from those around them.”
On the pages, we’re ancient depictions of white wolves wrapped in the moonlight and various depictions of wolves leading the charge into battle. Another was seated on a throne. Alexia began to reach out but then pulled her hand back as if she did not dare.
Enzo carefully moved closer to the queen to not attract the attention of the others as if at any moment he would be ready to leap in front of her. The other guard and Harley seemed more curious at the revelation while Alexia could not tell if she was breathing. Her eyes bore into blossom.
If there were more information on her ancestors, she needed to know. Her whole life she and her bother both held onto their secret afraid to show the world.
"I thought the White wolves were extinct?” Harley interjected as her curiosity got the better of her. Realizing she had spoken aloud, she quickly shut her mouth hoping no one noticed. Alexia did not dare reprimand her, as she was thankful someone else asked the question for her.
With a sigh blossom replied. “They are.”
There was disappointment in her voice that Alexia almost missed if she had not caught the slight sound of sorrow. She dared to shoot Enzo a quick look. She was met with an expression that told her that her mate would not be pleased with where their conversation had turned to.
Caspian had been reluctant to let her go and would have made her leave immediately if he were here. But he wasn’t and Alexia was in charge of this expedition. Her curiosity was too strong.
She could not let this chance pass. Her father had told her what he knew but she knew there was more to the stories of the white wolves. Her ancestral story.
"What do you know about white wolves?"
It was a risky question that earned her a pointed look from her guard but she chose to ignore it. Harley's look of intrigue and eagerness helped mask her desperation.
Blossom looked down at her lap "Not near as much as I would like."
Alexia had a similar feeling about her knowledge of the subject.
"But from what I have studied, they were incredible. Stronger than other wolves and have certain abilities gifted by the moon-goddess. Also, their healing abilities are supposed to be superior as well.” Blossom flipped a few pages. “While werewolves naturally heal faster, their wounds seemed to heal almost instantaneously. This book recounts some of their history.”
Again with the abilities. Alexia looked at her own hands searching for this unknown power she supposedly possessed.
Harley peered over Alexia’s shoulder unable to help herself. Blossom had turned the page to a depiction of a white wolf engulfed in cosmic energies.
It was hard for Alexia to process what she was seeing. Her head spun at the possibilities. Opening her fist and then closing it again ever so slowly her thoughts drifted.
“How does this relate to the stag?” Enzo cut in, worried about the unexpected turn the conversation had taken.
The fire in the hearth, while dying down, faintly cracked in the silence.
“It doesn’t not really, it’s just some background information. The legends of the white wolves are more common than those of the stag.”
“Then why tell us about it?” He replied not hiding his annoyance.
“Because they are thought to be similar. When it comes to the white stag but instead of the moon goddess’s power they are her messengers.” Blossom explained.
Alexia was tired of getting more questions than answers. “What kind of messages? How does that work? Does the moon goddess have them deliver letters like a postman?” The agitation seeped into her voice.
Blossom hesitated before responding. “That… is unknown… The book does not explain how they do it…”
“So we’re back to where we started…” Alexia muttered before sitting back in her chair with a sigh. She reached over picked up her tea cup and swirled the contents with her spoon.
“How do we even know this is real? You could be making this up for all we know.” Enzo cut in Abruptly.
Blossom looked taken aback by the blunt statement. She looked at the queen. “Your majesty I have done no such thing.”
Enzo doubting the woman continued to chide her. “You could be playing games with us.”
“I will remind you that it was you who came here and not I to you.” She said it with enough bite that Alexia raised her eyebrows up in slight respect.
Enzo let out a snort but did not continue. The forest woman held her ground against one of the kingdom's strongest warriors.
“Then tell me why you believe it is important to know this,” Alexia said as diplomatically as she could manage.
“What is interesting is that you saw this so close to the upcoming lunar event....” Her voice mumbled off as she returned to her thoughts.
Alexia stopped her spinning and cocked an eyebrow at the strange woman.
Wanting her to refocus, Alexia asked. “What do you mean? What event?”
The full moon was a few days away but that came every month, Alexia could not fathom how that could be relevant. What made this one any different?
Bloossom's head turned to the side slightly as she spoke as if the answer were obvious. “The blood moon.”
