Werewolf
The White Wolf Chapter 148: A Dark Day in the History Books
She let him lead the way as being snuggled into his side under his arm felt good. It was safe. Something they both needed, a small bit of control in chaos.
As they walked the halls, the grand clock chimed on the hour. Alexia tried to count each time it rang but gave up. The sun had set a dark sky cast over the palace.
They did not speak on the way to her parent's chambers. They did not need to enough had been already said.
Once at the door, Caspian held up his hand with a firm but still gentle knock at the door. It was flung open to reveal a disheveled-looking Shelia. Her hair was a mess sticking out from her head and her shirt was wrinkled past repair. Alexia had never seen her mother in such a state.
Sure Shelia could get frazzled but this was a new level. Alexia’s skin perked up as she subconsciously went on alert looking for danger.
“Alexia.” Shelia breathed in relief immediately grabbing her daughter and pulling her into a hug that took all the air from her lungs. “You’re ok.”
Releasing her daughter she began to fuzz over her daughter's clothes trying to straighten them as she spoke. “I mean, I knew we were ok but getting to lay my eyes on you lets it sink in.”
“We would have come sooner but we had matters to attend to,” Caspian explained.
“Yes of course. Oh, where are my manners!” Shelia said before dipping into a bow.
“No need for the formalities we just wanted to check on everyone,” Caspian said gesturing for her to rise.
“Right, right come in,” Shelia responded by opening the door wide to allow them to enter.
Jacob was near the far window talking into his phone. Most likely speaking with his beta about any developments and strategizing. When he saw who was entering the room he said his farewell and put away the phone.
“I told your mother you were safe,” Jacob said with a small smile trying to ease the tension but his face still held worry in the lines of his wrinkles.
“And in one piece.” She relief as her father kissed her forehead and then reached his hand out to Caspian who shook it.
“Good. We haven’t had any attacks in our pa I but we are on high alert.”
“As everyone should be. I’ve sent out a decree to all packs to be on high alert. Did you receive it?” Caspian asked.
“We did and are ready to assist neighboring packs,” Jacob responded.
“We’ve secured the border and tightened security. The recovery process has started. Edmund was able to capture one. Once the prisoner wakes up we will begin interrogation.” Caspian immediately began filling in Alpha Jacob.
Jacob nodded with understanding. They began discussing security and the next steps. Each male genuinely listened to the other with mutual respect. With Caspian’s father gone, Jacob was the only fatherly male he had in his life. It helped that Jacob had been close with the late king.
Shelia moved Alexia over to the sitting area where they sat on the couch with their legs under them facing one another.
Morgan joined her mother and sister coming out of her adjoining room. For once she was quiet and did not have much to say.
Their chambers were spacious with several rooms. The Silvers’ notoriety being a prominent pack and family to the Queen gave them a slightly elevated status than the other alphas.
“Have you eaten?” Shelia asked her oldest daughter.
“I have.” Alexia noticed the untouched food that was laid out on a table. “Have you?”
“I‘ll eat later.” Shelia shrugged.
“It’s been a stressful day,” Alexia confessed. It was nice to speak to her mother. There was no fear of judgment or scorn. She relaxed on the couch not releasing how tense her body had been all day as if it was a coiled spring.
“We heard you were outside of the palace when it happened,” Shelia told Alexia.
“I was but I’m safe now.” Alexia reached out and squeezed her mother’s hand who reciprocated and forced a smile that did not make it to her eyes.
Alexia decided not to tell them that she had chosen not to return immediately, avoiding at least a lengthy lecture.
Alexia filled them in on the updates that they had received. The kingdom seemed to have calmed down with the patrol stationed and the injured tended to. It was late and Alexia had received word that a few more children had been released.
Ellie had been improving as the hours passed. The caretaker she had left her with had been dutiful and stayed by her side holding her hand.
Still, Alexia remembered holding her little body and was sure she was gone. She did not know how she had made a dramatic turn.
Alexia blinked her eyes as she remembered where she was and what she was doing. “One more thing.” She said.
“What is it?” Shelia asked.
“The diamond I wore last night is gone.” She told them causing both females to gasp. Their eyes were wide and Morgan showed the most emotion she had the whole time Alexia had been in the presence coming out of her melancholy mood.
“How is that even possible?” Shelia asked just thinking about the security in the palace.
“We don’t know.” Alexia sighed. “ I remember it being in our chambers but after that, I don’t know.”
“You don’t think someone broke into your chambers or even the vault?” Shelia asked.
“After a day like today, anything could be possible.”
“That’s very troubling,” Shelia said rubbing her hand through her already messy hair.
Alexia gave them a brief idea of potential suspects but they were just guesses. They had no proof of inclination as to who was linked to the disappearance. She wished it was just under a pillow or something. Perhaps she should look in the cushions of the chairs in her chambers but she doubted that she would have any luck.
She hated to think the diamond and the events of the day were linked but she just could not shake the feeling that it was not coincidence.
“I had hoped to see Luca, is he and Abi sleeping?” Alexia asked.
Her sister and mother got still and looked at each other as they turned serious.
“What is it?” Alexia asked feeling the change in the mood.
“They are in their chambers resting,” Shelia said after thinking about her words.
“When I was in the city, we received word that a doctor had been asked to look at Abi, is she alright? The baby?” Alexia asked them with worry on her face.
Shelia took a deep breath as she began “This morning Abi went for a walk and got dizzy. She linked Luca and he rushed to her side. It seems she blacked out for a little bit and could not remember what happened. When Luca got to her she was lying on the ground. He was able to wake her and carry her back to their chambers. Abi began having some pain so they sent for a doctor. When the doctor arrived there was bleeding.”
Alexia listened but her heartbeat increased and her chest tightened as she felt the direction in which the conversation was going.
“The doctor tried their best but ultimately they lost the baby,” Shelia said in a strained voice as she spoke about the loss of her grandbaby.
Alexia’s hand covered her mouth in shock and Morgan wrapped her arms around her sister trying to comfort her.
“Oh no. Luca. Abi. They must be devasted.” Alexia choked out. Luca was surely hurting and that hurt Alexia. Her brother. Her friend. Her twin.
She wanted to go check on them but she knew they would prefer to be left to mourn with each other as mates.
Then Shane washed over her. When Abi announced her pregnancy she had been jealous that she was not pregnant. Now it all seemed foolish.
She hung her head as she wanted to berate herself for all of those feelings she had held inside of her.
Caspian felt her sadness as he kept glancing over at her but left her to the comfort of her mother and sister. Now that she knew she understood why Morgan was in an odd mood. They had been mourning.
The day would be remembered as the day that children died when historians looked back on it. It was a dark day.
Then a thought popped into Alexia’s head. She sat straight and wiped the stray tear that had fallen from her face. Her eyes locked with Caspian who seemed to read her mind and gave her a nod of encouragement.
“What if it wasn’t an accident?” She asked.
“What do you mean?” Shelia asked confused. “What are you talking about? These things happen, they are sad but a fact of life. Do you think Abi tried to harm her baby?”
“No Mom that’s not what I mean.” Alexia shook her head as everyone looked at her.
She gathered herself and began again. “Earlier Edmund mentioned that when he was out fighting it felt like the rogues were trying to get to this part of the palace. Why would they come here? No There is no one else in this wing.” An arrangement she had done on purpose.
Shelia sat back as she pursed her lips. “Why would they not go after you? You were in the city.”
“Someone.” Alexia’s eyes shot to her mate. “Started a rumor I could not shift.” She wasn’t sure if she was miffed by that or not. She didn’t know what to feel, it was all very confusing with the adrenaline and emotions that coursed through her veins.
“It’s a possibility,” Jacob said as he thought the information over. “We need to take the necessary precautions.”
“Agreed,” Caspian said.
“Someone will need to speak with Luca,” Shelia said.
“I will but it can wait till tomorrow. Leave then be.” Jacob said with sadness in his eyes.
Alexia felt bad giving her parents more to worry about but she knew she had to be honest with them about any potential danger.
She turned her arm over where she could see the veins slightly below her skin. Someone was after this. The Silver bloodline that she was a part of. It seemed there was more to her family tree than she knew.
She turned her arm back over and looked at her family. Why them?
“You think someone hurt or tried to hurt Abi?” Morgan asked scared.
“I think someone is hunting Silvers,” Alexia said.
